Background: Commonly used screening measures of cognitive function such as the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) are not sensitive to assess cognitive function among individuals with severe cognitive impairment due to floor effect. The Severe Cognitive Impairment Rating Scale (SCIRS) was designed to assess cognitive function in those with severe cognitive impairment, however, psychometric properties of its English version have not been reported.

Method: Using the existing data from StaN and tTED studies, floor and ceiling effects (percentage of minimal or maximal scores) of SCIRS and MoCA were examined, and the association between SCIRS and MoCA was evaluated.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) affects about 416 million individuals across the disease continuum. An estimated 40% of dementia cases can be prevented or delayed in onset by addressing modifiable risk factors like sleep time, physical activity (PA), and mood. These three behaviors (sleep time, physical inactivity, and mood) are linked to cognitive decline, and their tridirectional link has been shown by prior research work.

BACE-1 and ADAM-10 as Potential Peripheral Biomarkers for Alzheimer's Disease.

Curr Pharm Des

January 2025

Department of Translational Medicine and for Romagna, University of Ferrara, Via Luigi Borsari 46, 44121, Ferrara, Italy.

Amyloid beta (Aβ) dyshomeostasis is considered the main biological aberration in Alzheimer's Disease (AD) pathology. The interplay between Aβ formation and clearance is predominantly modulated by a disintegrin and a metalloproteinase 10 (ADAM10, α-secretase) and β-site APP Cleaving Enzyme 1 (BACE1), the two pivotal enzymes in both non-amyloidogenic/amyloidogenic and amyloidolytic pathways. Emerging evidence suggests that aberrations in ADAM10 and BACE1 expression, activity, and function in the brain of AD patients also manifest in peripheral fluids, suggesting their potential as blood-based biomarkers for AD diagnosis.

Background: Screen failure due to amyloid negativity is yet a problem in clinical trials for anti-amyloid drugs. In this context, clinical characteristics of patients presenting with cognitive decline may decrease the screen failure ratio by increasing the odds of selecting individuals with brain amyloid pathology. Herein, we aimed at estimating amyloid and tau positivity in individuals using clinical variables in a machine learning model of prediction.

Ultrasonographic evaluation of diaphragm fatigue in healthy humans.

Exp Physiol

January 2025

Division of Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences, College of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, Brunel University London, Uxbridge, UK.

Assessment of diaphragm function and fatigue typically relies on the measurement of transdiaphragmatic pressure (P). Although P serves as an index of diaphragm force output, it provides limited information regarding the ability of the muscle to shorten and generate power. We asked whether ultrasonography, combined with P, could be used to quantify changes in diaphragm function attributable to fatigue.

Whose conservation, revisited: how a focus on people-nature relationships spotlights new directions for conservation science.

Philos Trans R Soc Lond B Biol Sci

January 2025

Department of Natural Resource Sciences and Bieler School of Environment, McGill University, Montreal H9X 3V9, Canada.

Georgina Mace introduced a compelling perspective on the major shifts in conservation science's framing and purpose from 1960 to 2010. A decade ago, she proposed that the conservation community had begun to move into a new framing of 'people and nature' based on changes in perspectives on the relationships between people and nature and new interdisciplinary concepts and methods used in conservation. Progress in using this frame is clear as 'two-way dynamic relationships between people and nature' have since taken centre stage in science, practice and policy.
