There are large knowledge gaps concerning environmental levels and fate of many organic pollutants, particularly for chemicals of emerging concern in tropical regions of the Global South. In this study, we investigated the levels of chlorinated paraffins (CPs) and dechloranes in air and soil in rural, suburban, and urban regions in and around Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Samples were also collected near the city's main municipal waste dumpsite and an electronic waste (e-waste) handling facility.

Objective: To determine the seroprevalence of selected zoonotic viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) and their associated risk factors in Tanzania.
Methods: Blood samples were collected from consenting outpatients and community members in eight districts selected from five ecological zones of Tanzania. Serum was harvested and tested for the presence of immunoglobulin G (IgG) and M (IgM) antibodies against Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), Ebola virus disease (EVD), Marburg virus disease (MVD), Rift Valley fever (RVF), and yellow fever (YF).

Complementary foods based on habitual cereals such as maize have been linked with the promotion of undernutrition in young children. Blending the starchy-rich maize with nutritious-rich indigenous food such as oyster mushroom could improve the nutritional composition of complementary foods. Seasonal differences in precipitation may affect contaminant dynamics in tropical coastal regions due to terrestrial runoff of contaminants to the marine environment after the rainy seasons. To assess the effect of seasonal rainfall on occurrence of organohalogen contaminants in a coastal ecosystem, marine fishes and prawns were collected off the coast of Zanzibar, Tanzania in January and August 2018, representing pre- and post-rainy season, respectively. Samples were analyzed for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), brominated flame retardants (BFRs), including polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and emerging BFRs, as well as the dietary descriptors stable isotopes of carbon (δC) and nitrogen (δN).

Metal hydrides are feasible for energy storage applications as they are able to decompose with hydrogen gas release. In this work, gaseous complex sodium hydrides, NaMH and NaMH (M = B or Al), have been investigated using DFT/B3P86 and MP2 methods with 6-311++G(d,p) basis set; the optimized geometry, vibrational spectra and thermodynamic (TD) properties have been determined. Based on TD approach, a stability of the hydrides to different dissociation channels is analysed; the enthalpies of formation ∆H°(0) of gaseous species have been obtained: - 1 ± 17 kJ mol (NaBH), 91 ± 14 kJ mol (NaAlH), - 13 ± 16 kJ mol (NaBH), and 71 ± 16 kJ mol (NaAlH).

Structural and optoelectronic properties of lawsone (L), lawsone ether (LE) and bilawsone (BL) were studied theoretically using the DFT and time-dependent DFT methods with hybrid functional B3LYP5 and 6-311G (2d,p) basis set. For the monomer lawsone molecule, isomerization reaction between two rotational isomers was analyzed based on a thermodynamic approach. Since the 2000s, Tanzania's natural resource management policy has emphasised Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs), designed to promote wildlife and biodiversity conservation, poverty alleviation and rural development. We carried out a quasi-experimental impact evaluation of social impacts of WMAs, collecting data from 24 villages participating in 6 different WMAs across two geographical regions, and 18 statistically matched control villages. We compared the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli isolates from household-level producers of broiler (commercial source breeds) and local chickens in the Arusha District of Tanzania. Households were composed of a single dwelling or residence with independent, penned broiler flocks. Free-range, scavenging chickens were mixed breed and loosely associated with individual households.
