Purpose: To determine whether renal cell carcinoma metastases (RCC-Mets) to the pancreas can be differentiated from pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) in patients with RCC on CT or MRI at presentation.

Methods: This retrospective study included patients with biopsy-proven RCC-Mets (n = 102) or PNETs (n = 32) at diagnosis or after nephrectomy for RCC. Inter-observer agreement (Cohen kappa) was assessed in 95 patients with independent reads by two radiologists, with discrepancies resolved by consensus for final analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • Loss of heterozygosity for defective alleles of the SDH enzyme can lead to paragangliomas, a type of tumor originating in neuroendocrine cells in humans.
  • Researchers created mouse models with conditional loss of the SDHC subunit in early development, hypothesizing it would induce paraganglioma in chromaffin cells.
  • Instead of tumors, mice showed developmental defects like gait anomalies and fur discoloration, indicating neural crest cell dysfunction without tumor formation, suggesting differences between human and mouse responses to SDH loss.

Management of incidentally detected gallbladder polyps: a review of clinical scenarios using the 2022 SRU gallbladder polyp consensus guidelines.

Abdom Radiol (NY)

September 2024

Department of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging, Walter C. Mackenzie Health Sciences Centre, University of Alberta, 8440-112 Street, Edmonton, AB, T6G 2B7, Canada.

Gallbladder (GB) polyps are a common incidental finding on sonography, but only a small fraction of polyps become GB cancer. The Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound (SRU) consensus committee recently performed an extensive literature review and published guidelines for GB polyp follow-up/management to provide clarity among the many heterogeneous recommendations that are available to clinicians. As these guidelines have become adopted into clinical practice, challenging clinical scenarios have arisen including GB polyps in primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), high risk geographic/genetic patient populations, shrinking polyps, pedunculated vs sessile polyps, thin vs thick stalked polyps, vascular polyps and multiple polyps.

Members of the Fleischner Society have compiled a glossary of terms for thoracic imaging that replaces previous glossaries published in 1984, 1996, and 2008, respectively. The impetus to update the previous version arose from multiple considerations. These include an awareness that new terms and concepts have emerged, others have become obsolete, and the usage of some terms has either changed or become inconsistent to a degree that warranted a new definition.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the prevalence of radiographic progression (rDP) in men with prostate cancer who had very low prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels using C-11 choline PET imaging.
  • Out of 1323 patients with rDP, 220 (16.6%) exhibited this progression while their PSA was under 0.5 ng/mL, with 78% subsequently developing castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC).
  • Key findings indicate that common sites of rDP included lymph nodes and bones, with factors like older age and CRPC status linked to poorer survival rates, as 46% of this low PSA rDP group died during follow-up.
