Association of renal function with mortality among hospitalized patients treated with remdesivir for COVID-19.

PLoS One

June 2024

Division of Public Health, Infectious Diseases and Occupational Medicine, Department of Medicine, Mayo Clinic Rochester, Rochester, MN, United States of America.

Background And Aim: Renal dysfunction is associated with poor outcomes in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In an effort to improve outcomes, intravenous remdesivir has been broadly used for the treatment of COVID-19 even in patients with low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Our study assessed the residual risk of outcomes of patients with low eGFR despite treatment with remdesivir for COVID-19, during a timeframe prior to the expanded label across all levels of renal function.

Article Synopsis
  • Small bowel obstruction, often linked to long-term NSAID use, is a significant health issue that can lead to serious complications and high healthcare costs; the study focuses on a specific condition known as small bowel diaphragm disease.* -
  • Researchers reviewed cases from 2010 to 2023, identifying 22 patients who had elective small bowel surgery, with all having documented NSAID use and evidence of strictures, but no signs of severe inflammation or other complications.* -
  • The findings suggest that while preoperative imaging like CT or MR enterography can indicate strictures in most patients, it cannot definitively diagnose small bowel diaphragm disease, highlighting the need for surgeons to consider this condition in patients with obstruction and NSAID history.*

Treatment options for patients with biliary tract cancer are limited, and the prognosis is poor. CTX-009, a novel bispecific antibody targeting both DLL4 and VEGF-A, has demonstrated antitumor activity in patients with advanced cancers as both a monotherapy and in combination with chemotherapy. In a phase II study of patients with advanced biliary tract cancer who had received one or two prior therapies, CTX-009 with paclitaxel demonstrated a 37.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of epinephrine (Epi) on heart muscle cells (cardiomyocytes) after they undergo cooling and rewarming (hypothermia/re-warming).
  • At normal body temperature (37 °C), Epi enhanced calcium levels and contraction strength in these cells; however, after the cooling and rewarming process, the cells showed weakened contractility that Epi could not improve.
  • The findings suggest that Epi treatment is ineffective in reversing the contractile dysfunction caused by hypothermia and rewarming in heart cells.

Succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) is a key mitochondrial enzyme involved in the tricarboxylic acid cycle, where it facilitates the oxidation of succinate to fumarate, and is coupled to the reduction of ubiquinone in the electron transport chain as Complex II. Previously, we developed a confocal-based quantitative histochemical technique to determine the maximum velocity of the SDH reaction (SDH) in single cells and observed that SDH corresponds with mitochondrial volume density. In addition, mitochondrial volume and motility varied within different compartments of human airway smooth muscle (hASM) cells.

Prognostic value of aortic valve calcification in non-severe aortic stenosis with preserved ejection fraction.

Eur Heart J Cardiovasc Imaging

September 2024

Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Mayo Clinic Rochester, 200 First Street SW, Rochester, MN 55905, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Aortic valve calcification (AVC) is a significant predictor of survival in patients with non-severe aortic stenosis (AS), and specific cut-offs were identified for men (1185 AU) and women (850 AU) which are lower than those for severe AS.
  • In a study of 395 patients, those with sub-severe and severe AVC had a significantly higher risk of death compared to those with low AVC, regardless of other health factors.
  • The findings suggest that sub-severe AVC can guide the timing of aortic valve interventions, as these procedures reduced mortality risks in patients with higher AVC levels.

Tumor evolution is driven by genetic variation; however, it is the tumor microenvironment (TME) that provides the selective pressure contributing to evolution in cancer. Despite high histopathological heterogeneity within glioblastoma (GBM), the most aggressive brain tumor, the interactions between the genetically distinct GBM cells and the surrounding TME are not fully understood. To address this, we analyzed matched primary and recurrent GBM archival tumor tissues with imaging-based techniques aimed to simultaneously evaluate tumor tissues for the presence of hypoxic, angiogenic, and inflammatory niches, extracellular matrix (ECM) organization, TERT promoter mutational status, and several oncogenic amplifications on the same slide and location.
