Delayed onset Spontaneous Hyphema after OMNI® Surgical System.

J Glaucoma

October 2024

Department of Ophthalmology, Mayo Clinic 200 First St SW, Rochester, MN, 55905.

Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) offers options for glaucoma treatment that have generally improved safety profiles compared with filtering surgery. MIGS vary in design and procedure, but all angle-based MIGS function by bypassing or removing aqueous humor outflow resistance at the level of the trabecular meshwork. This can lower intraocular pressure but also remove the blood-aqueous barrier.

Fidelity monitoring is the degree to which a clinical trial intervention is implemented as intended by a research protocol. Consistent implementation of research protocols supported with extant fidelity monitoring plans contribute rigor and validity of study results. Fidelity monitoring plans should be comprehensive yet practical to accommodate the realities of conducting research, particularly a pragmatic clinical trial, in dynamic settings with heterogeneous patient populations.

Autograft immune content and survival in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma: A post hoc analysis.

Leuk Res

June 2019

Division of Hematology, Department of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, 200 First St. SW, Rochester, MN 55905, United States; Department of Medical Oncology, Mayo Clinic 200 First St. SW, Rochester, MN, 55905.

The infusion of autograft absolute lymphocyte and monocyte counts affect survival in patients undergoing autologous peripheral hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (APHSCT). However, the specific autograft immune effector cells affecting survival post-APHSCT are unknown. Thus, we performed an ad hoc analysis from our published double-blind, randomized phase III clinical trial in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) patients, looking at the infused autograft immune effector cells and their relationship with clinical outcomes post-APHSCT.

Objective: This study investigates high-frequency oscillations (HFOs; 65-600 Hz) as a biomarker of epileptogenic brain and explores three barriers to their clinical translation: (1) Distinguishing pathological HFOs (pathHFO) from physiological HFOs (physHFO). (2) Classifying tissue under individual electrodes as epileptogenic (3) Reproducing results across laboratories.

Methods: We recorded HFOs using intracranial EEG (iEEG) in 90 patients with focal epilepsy and 11 patients without epilepsy.

Tuberculosis of the gastrointestinal tract and associated viscera.

J Clin Tuberc Other Mycobact Dis

August 2018

Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Mayo Clinic 200 First St. SW, Rochester, MN 55905 507-284-2511, United States.

Tuberculosis involvement of the gastrointestinal tract, peritoneum, and associated viscera is an uncommon but well described entity. While peritoneal tuberculosis and tuberculous enteritis are more common, involvement of the esophagus, stomach, colon, rectum, anus, liver, bile ducts, gallbladder, and pancreas can occur. Diagnosis is challenging as cases often mimic neoplasm or inflammatory bowel disease.

Laryngoscopy is the gold standard to diagnose exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction, though inspiratory flow-volume loop may provide a clue. We combined tidal flow-volume loop analysis laryngoscopy during exercise and found that cigar-shaped - flattened - inspiratory loops are associated with obstruction. Pursed-lip breathing slows inhalation thereby reducing vocal fold adduction.

Prothrombin Complex Concentrate Reversal of Coagulopathy in Emergency General Surgery Patients.

World J Surg

August 2018

Division of Trauma, Critical Care and General Surgery, St. Mary's Hospital, Mayo Clinic 200 First St SW, Rochester, MN, 55905, USA.

Background: Coagulopathy can delay or complicate surgical diseases that require emergent surgical treatment. Prothrombin complex concentrates (PCC) provide concentrated coagulation factors which may reverse coagulopathy more quickly than plasma (FFP) alone. We aimed to determine the time to operative intervention in coagulopathic emergency general surgery patients receiving either PCC or FFP.

Sharing the spotlight in Durban: A report from IAS TB2016 at AIDS2016.

J Clin Tuberc Other Mycobact Dis

May 2017

Mayo Center for Tuberculosis, Mayo Clinic 200 First St. SW, Rochester, MN, 55905, USA.

Tuberculosis (TB) is now recognized as the number one cause of death worldwide due to a single infectious pathogen and is the cause of death in one-third of people living with HIV worldwide. An inaugural pre-conference focused on TB (TB2016) was held at the International AIDS Society Conference AIDS2016. This report focuses on key messages from the TB2016 conference that are important for the medical, public health, activist, and scientific communities.

Volumetric MRI data correlate to disease severity in metachromatic leukodystrophy.

Ann Clin Transl Neurol

September 2015

Department of Child Neurology, VU University Medical Center Amsterdam, The Netherlands ; Neuroscience Campus Amsterdam Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Objective: Metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) is an inherited lysosomal disorder due to a deficiency in arylsulfatase A with progressive demyelination and neurological decline. This retrospective MRI study investigated the extent of cortical involvement at time of diagnosis, and clinical correlates to both conventional and regional volumetric measures of brain involvement.

Methods: 3D-T1-weighted MRI scans were used to determine cortical thickness and surface-based cerebral cortical gray matter (GM) and cerebral white matter (WM) volume (GMV and WMV), WM lesions, thalamus, and cerebellum.

Article Synopsis
  • Bone marrow angiogenesis is elevated in multiple myeloma (MM) patients, and its level correlates with disease progression.
  • While previous research indicated no significant differences in VEGF and VEGFR expression between different disease stages, this study found that cyVEGF levels are higher in MM compared to MGUS/SMM and AL, though not statistically significant.
  • The presence of VEGF receptors was confirmed on plasma cells from all patient categories, suggesting that VEGF plays a role in the development of MM and may influence specific plasma cell subsets.

Purpose: Patients with newly diagnosed, advanced-stage, follicular grade 1 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) are often asymptomatic and can be observed without immediate chemotherapy. The goals of this study were to assess the overall response rate (ORR) to rituximab in this patient population and to determine the time-to-progression (TTP) and time-to-subsequent-chemotherapy (TTSC).

Patients And Methods: Eligible patients had untreated follicular grade 1 NHL, and measurable stage III/IV disease.

1H MR spectroscopy in common dementias.

Neurology

October 2004

Department of Diagnostic Radiology, Mayo Clinic 200 First St. SW, Rochester, MN 55905, USA.

Objective: To determine the 1H MR spectroscopic (MRS) findings and intergroup differences among common dementias: Alzheimer disease (AD), vascular dementia (VaD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD).

Methods: The authors consecutively recruited 206 normal elderly subjects and 121 patients with AD, 41 with FTLD, 20 with DLB, and 8 with VaD. The 1H MRS metabolite ratio changes in common dementias were evaluated with respect to normal and also differences among the common dementias.
