A liquid-based perinatal life support system (PLS) for extremely premature infants (born before 28 week of gestational age) envisions a connection between the infant's native umbilical cord and an artificial placenta system through cannulation. This system mimics a natural mothers' womb to achieve better organ maturations. The objective of this study is to gain insight into the clinical focus points of umbilical cord cannulation and how cannulation should be addressed in extremely premature infants during the transfer from the uterus to an in-utero simulating liquid-based PLS system.

Multidisciplinary cardiac rehabilitation (CR) improves the prognosis and quality of life of patients with cardiovascular disease and has therefore received strong recommendations in international guidelines for the treatment of patients with chronic coronary syndromes and chronic heart failure. Aiming to both resolve several barriers that impede participation in CR and to improve the effectiveness of CR, cardiac telerehabilitation (CTR) has emerged as a cost-effective alternative to traditional, centre-based CR. Although the body of evidence for the feasibility and effectiveness of CTR is large and still growing, real-life implementations are scarce, which may be due to insufficient knowledge about CTR interventions and due to the challenges its implementation comes with.

Objective: After lowering the Dutch threshold for active treatment from 25 to 24 completed weeks' gestation, survival to discharge increased by 10% in extremely preterm live born infants. Now that this guideline has been implemented, an accurate description of neurodevelopmental outcome at school age is needed.

Design: Population-based cohort study.

Background: Multimodal prehabilitation is a promising adjunct to the current surgical treatment pathway for colorectal cancer patients to further improve postoperative outcomes, especially for high-risk patients with low functional capacity. The aim of the present study was to test the effect of prehabilitation on immediate postoperative recovery.

Method: The study was designed as a RCT with two arms (intervention and control).

Introduction: Increasing evidence suggests that multimodal prehabilitation programs reduce postoperative complication rates and length of stay. Nevertheless, prehabilitation is not standard care yet, also as financial consequences of such programs are lacking. Aim of this study was to analyse clinical outcomes and effects on hospital resources if prehabilitation is implemented for patients who are planned for colorectal surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of TNFα-inhibitors like adalimumab and infliximab is crucial for optimizing dosage and enhancing treatment effectiveness, traditionally done through slow ELISA techniques.
  • A new bioluminescent sensor platform called dRAPPID has been adapted for quicker, point-of-care (POC) TDM testing, facilitating easier and faster home-testing options.
  • Clinical trials showed that the dRAPPID sensors correlated well with ELISA results, achieving high Pearson's correlation coefficients of up to 0.97, indicating reliability for monitoring patient levels of these drugs.

The classification of sleep state in preterm infants, particularly in distinguishing between active sleep (AS) and quiet sleep (QS), has been investigated using cardiorespiratory information such as electrocardiography (ECG) and respiratory signals. However, accurately differentiating between AS and wake remains challenging; therefore, there is a pressing need to include additional information to further enhance the classification performance. To address the challenge, this study explores the effectiveness of incorporating video-based actigraphy analysis alongside cardiorespiratory signals for classifying the sleep states of preterm infants.

Impact of EDP-M on survival of patients with metastatic adrenocortical carcinoma: A population-based study.

Eur J Cancer

January 2024

Amsterdam UMC location VU Medical Center, department of Medical Oncology, Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Cancer Center Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Stage IV adrenocortical carcinoma (mACC) has a historically poor prognosis, but results from a 2012 trial led to the recommendation of the first-line treatment EDP-M, which includes multiple chemotherapy agents.
  • Analysis of data from 167 mACC patients in the Netherlands showed that while EDP-M appeared to improve overall survival (OS) numerically, the results were not statistically significant; patients receiving mitotane alone had the best long-term survival rates.
  • Overall survival for mACC patients in the Netherlands has improved since 2014, with factors like palliative adrenalectomy and local treatment contributing to better outcomes, but EDP-M did not show a significant impact on OS.
