  • The study aimed to identify risk factors for ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in intensive care units (ICUs) of low- and middle-income countries, where VAP rates are significantly higher than in high-income countries.
  • The research was a prospective cohort analysis covering 743 ICUs across 282 hospitals in 42 diverse countries over 24 years, following 289,643 patients for a total of nearly 2 million patient days.
  • Key identified risk factors for acquiring VAP included male sex, prolonged ICU stay, use of mechanical ventilation, and specific ICU admissions (such as oncology and respiratory ICUs), with CPAP showing the highest associated risk.

Pregnant women are among the high-risk population for severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) with unfavorable peripartum outcomes and increased incidence of preterm births. Hemolysis, the elevation of liver enzymes, and low platelet count (HELLP) syndrome and severe preeclampsia are among the leading causes of maternal mortality. Evidence supports a higher odd of pre-eclampsia in women with COVID-19, given overlapping pathophysiology.

NOTTO COVID-19 Vaccine Guidelines for Transplant Recipients.

Indian J Nephrol

April 2021

Director General of Health Services, New Delhi, India.

In December 2019, novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) infection started in Wuhan and resulted in a pandemic within a few weeks' time. Organ transplant recipients being at a risk for more severe COVID-19 if they get SARS CoV-2 viral infection, COVID-19 vaccine has a significant role in these patients. The vaccine is a safer way to help build protection and would either prevent COVID-19 infection or at least diminish the severity of the disease.

Background: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is a global public health problem with important regional differences. We investigated these differences in the PARAGON-HF trial (Prospective Comparison of Angiotensin Receptor Neprilysin Inhibitor With Angiotensin Receptor Blocker Global Outcomes in HFpEF), the largest and most inclusive global HFpEF trial.

Methods: We studied differences in clinical characteristics, outcomes, and treatment effects of sacubitril/valsartan in 4796 patients with HFpEF from the PARAGON-HF trial, grouped according to geographic region.
