Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a complex and progressive inflammatory liver disease characterized by immune-mediated destruction of the liver parenchyma, hypergammaglobulinemia, the presence of circulating autoantibodies, and good response to immunosuppressive therapy. Recent evidence suggests a coordinated regulation by the local renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and tissue kallikrein-kinin system (TKKS) of blood flow and substrate supply in oxidative red myofibres of skeletal muscle tissue during endurance exercise. The performance of these myofibres is dependent on the increased oxidation of substrates facilitated by augmenting nutritive blood flow and glucose uptake. Humoral factors released by the contracting fibres, such as adenosine and kinins, are suggested to be responsible for this metabolic adjustment.

Friedreich's ataxia is a neurodegenerative disease frequently associated with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. We have determined mitochondrial ATP, phosphocreatine, and intracellular inorganic phosphate levels by 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy in the heart of 11 Friedreich's ataxia patients and 11 healthy controls. For the first time, to our knowledge, we showed a significant correlation between the extent of myocardial energy deficiency and the degree of myocardial hypertrophy.

PRESS sequence can lead to a signal loss for the lactate doublet compared with signals from uncoupled nuclei which is dependent on the choice of t(1) and t(2). The most striking signal loss of up to 78% of the total signal occurs with the symmetrical PRESS sequence (t(1)=t(2)) at an echo time of 2/J (approximately 290 ms).

Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), a naturally occuring compound and a radical scavenger was shown to enhance glucose transport and utilization in different experimental and animal models. Clinical studies described an increase of insulin sensitivity after acute and short-term (10 d) parenteral administration of ALA. The effects of a 4-week oral treatment with alpha-lipoic acid were evaluated in a placebo-controlled, multicenter pilot study to determine see whether oral treatment also improves insulin sensitivity.

Two derivatives of the wideband alternating-phase low-power technique for zero-residual splitting (WALTZ)-4 decoupling sequence for broadband decoupling named WALTZ-4a and WALTZ-4b were compared for their proton decoupling performance in 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy using a Siemens Magnetom SP 1.5 T whole-body imager. Version WALTZ-4a originally implemented by the manufacturer doubles and triples the transmitter amplitude of the 90 degrees pulse to achieve the 180 degrees and 270 degrees flip angle required for one composite pulse R in the WALTZ sequence.

A volume-selective NMR method is presented for very exact determination of the difference of the Larmor frequencies between the coupled resonances of homonuclear AX3 spin systems, as, for example, lactate. Thioctic acid (TA), a naturally occurring compound, was shown to enhance glucose utilization in various experimental models after acute and chronic administration. It also increased insulin-stimulated glucose disposal in patients with NIDDM after acute administration.
