Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) emerged as a pandemic with varied clinical presentations. Patients with an underlying comorbidity such as diabetes and chronic kidney diseases (CKDs) had an increased risk of developing secondary bacterial and fungal coinfections which was further accentuated by the use of steroids during the management and with prolonged intensive care unit stay. This case series describes the clinical course of two patients with CKD who developed acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 infection and mucormycosis.

Justification: Global developmental delay (GDD) is a relatively common neurodevelopmental disorder; however, paucity of published literature and absence of uniform guidelines increases the complexity of clinical management of this condition. Hence, there is a need of practical guidelines for the pediatrician on the diagnosis and management of GDD, summarizing the available evidence, and filling in the gaps in existing knowledge and practices.

Process: Seven subcommittees of subject experts comprising of writing and expert group from among members of Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) and its chapters of Neurology, Neurodevelopment Pediatrics and Growth Development and Behavioral Pediatrics were constituted, who reviewed literature, developed key questions and prepared the first draft on guidelines after multiple rounds of discussion.

Malnutrition is a significant comorbidity in nearly one-third of the 8 million deaths in children under five years of age worldwide. Children with severe acute malnutrition have severely disturbed physiology and metabolism. Considering the vital importance of amino acids and the likely changes with the therapeutic diet, we aimed at evaluating these changes in children with SAM at baseline and after rehabilitation with a therapeutic diet at 14 days.

Department of Pediatrics, Maulana Azad Medical College and Associated Lok Nayak Hospital, University of Delhi, New Delhi, India.

Children with nephrotic syndrome (NS) have a number of potential risk factors for the development of acute kidney injury (AKI) including intravascular volume depletion, infection, exposure to nephrotoxic medication, and renal interstitial edema. This study was aimed to determine the incidence of AKI in children hospitalized with a relapse of NS and its short-term outcome. This prospective observational study was conducted from February 2017 to January 2018 at a tertiary care teaching hospital.

Distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) dislocation can occur as an isolated injury or in association with fracture radius (Galeazzi fracture-dislocation), Essex-Lopresti lesion or, rarely, with fracture of both radius and ulna (termed "Galeazzi type fracture"). DRUJ dislocations can be simple or complex. While simple DRUJ dislocation can be reduced by closed methods once the associated fractures are fixed anatomically, complex dislocation does not reduce by closed means.

Indian J Crit Care Med

November 2021

Medical Director, Mangalam Medicity Hospital, Jaipur, Chairman Jigyasa Foundation, Jaipur, Rajasthan, India.

Article Synopsis
  • Physeal injuries of the proximal tibia are rare, making up only 1% of all physeal injuries, and when they occur with popliteal artery injuries, they can become limb-threatening.
  • The case presented discusses a unique instance of a posteriorly displaced pure Salter Harris type I injury that also involved compromised blood flow which was successfully treated with K-wires.
  • It's crucial to monitor for vascular injuries in such fractures, as they may be easily overlooked, and early intervention can prevent serious complications like limb ischemia.

Purpose: We sought to assess clinical, radiological, and functional outcomes following treatment of extra-articular malunions of the distal radius using a multiplanar z-corrective osteotomy.

Methods: Fifteen patients with extra-articular distal radius malunions (13 dorsal and 2 volar) underwent z-corrective osteotomy and volar plate fixation without bone grafting. Correction and maintenance of each deformity was evaluated in terms of various radiographic indices (radial height; volar and radial tilt); osteotomy union; pain (visual analog scale); grip strength; range of motion; Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand scores; and Mayo wrist scores.

Osteoblastomas are rare, benign, bone-forming neoplasms that represent less than 1% of all bone tumors and occur mostly in people aged 10 to 30 years. In long bones, the metadiaphyseal region tends to be most commonly affected. However, to the best of our knowledge, only 11 cases have been reported to occur in the distal radius.

Case: Multilevel lumbar spondylolistheses have been reported, but only secondary to degenerative processes. We describe a case where grade 4 anterolisthesis occurred (L3,4,5 over S1) because of multiple level traumatic pedicle avulsion rather than facetal/pars interarticularis/posterior ligamentous complex disruption in a 42-year-old man who presented with paraparesis after a fall from height. Decompression was performed at the L5 level, and pedicle screw fixation was performed at L3, L5, and S1 levels.
