Department of Internal Medicine and Therapeutics, University of Pavia, 27100, Italy; Istituti Clinici Scientifici Maugeri IRCCS, Unit of Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, Laboratory for Endocrine Disruptors, 27100, Pavia, Italy. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Homosalate is a common UV-B filter in sunscreens that has been found to have estrogenic and anti-androgenic effects in animal models, but its impact on thyroid cells is not well understood.
  • This study tested the effects of Homosalate on two types of thyroid cells (FRTL-5 and NHT) over different concentrations and time periods, finding it significantly reduced cell viability in FRTL-5 at 250μM after 72 hours and in NHT only at the highest concentration (2000μM) after 48-72 hours.
  • The results showed that high concentrations of Homosalate can cause cytotoxicity, exhibit genotoxic effects in rat thyroid cells, and increase the expression of

Article Synopsis
  • - Acute chest pain (ACP) is a common reason patients visit emergency departments (ED) and can indicate serious cardiovascular issues like acute coronary syndrome and pulmonary embolism.
  • - Effective triage involves assessing ACP characteristics, patient history, and using tools like risk scores and ECGs to determine the likelihood of cardiac chest pain.
  • - The review highlights the use of rapid cardiac troponin tests and transthoracic echocardiography for patient evaluation, aiming to enhance outcomes and lower healthcare costs in ED settings.

Background: Discomfort can be the cause of noninvasive respiratory support (NRS) failure in up to 50% of treated patients. Several studies have shown how analgosedation during NRS can reduce the rate of delirium, endotracheal intubation, and hospital length of stay in patients with acute respiratory failure. The purpose of this project was to explore consensus on which medications are currently available as analgosedatives during NRS, which types of patients may benefit from analgosedation while on NRS, and which clinical settings might be appropriate for the implementation of analgosedation during NRS.

Introduction: Current research on potentially inappropriate prescribing (PIP) in polymedicated older adults with atrial fibrillation (AF) and multimorbidity is predominantly focused on PIP of oral anticoagulants (OAC). Our study aimed to assess (i) the overall prevalence of PIP in older multimorbid adults with AF, (ii) potential associated factors of PIP, and (iii) the association of PIP with adverse health outcomes in a nationwide sample of Swedish older adults.

Methods: Swedish national registries were linked to establish a cohort with a 2-year follow-up of older adults (≥65y) who, on 1 January 2017, had a diagnosis of AF and had at least one comorbidity (n = 203,042).

Left ventricular volumes and function in successful and failed His-BundLe Pacing. A comparative prospective study.

J Cardiovasc Electrophysiol

November 2024

Department of Medicine and Surgery, Varese and Department of Medicine and Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, Maugeri Care and Research Institute, IRCCS Tradate, University of Insubria, Varese, Italy.

Introduction: Initial data suggest that His Bundle Pacing (HBP) could preserve long-term cardiac structure and function better than Right Ventricular Pacing (RVP), but evidence is limited.

Methods: We studied consecutive patients with baseline ejection fraction (EF) ≥ 50% who underwent HBP attempt, either successful (HBP group) or failed (RVP group). Two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) echocardiography were carried out at baseline and after 6 months of ventricular pacing burden > 20%.

Background: We discuss the diagnostic benefit of pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) of the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) in a case series of patients with different pathologies. We expand the diagnostic potential of DRG stimulation beyond paresthesia mapping by using DRG stimulation to help determine the role of the DRG in the patient's pain and narrow down the etiology. In some cases, DRG stimulation was also part of the treatment plan.

World Neurosurg

December 2024

Neurosurgical Clinic, AOUP "Paolo Giaccone", Post Graduate Residency Program in Neurologic Surgery, Department of Experimental Biomedicine and Clinical Neurosciences, School of Medicine, University of Palermo, Palermo, Italy.

Background: Glioblastoma is the most common aggressive primary brain tumor in adults. Changes in cognition, personality, and behavior of patients as well as side effects of treatments cause unique challenges for providing care and may impact caregiver burden in different ways.

Methods: This retrospective study included 45 patients with a diagnosis of glioblastoma treated between January 2022 and June 2023 in 2 neurosurgical departments.

Background: Data on resilience, the ability to recover from adversity, in coeliac disease (CeD) are lacking.

Aim: To assess the degree of resilience in patients with CeD on a gluten-free diet (GFD), and its association with clinical features, sociodemographic factors, psychological morbidity, and quality of life (QOL).

Methods: A cross-sectional multicentre Italian study was conducted on adult CeD patients between May 2022 and April 2023.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how the severity and visibility of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) affect children's quality of life (QoL).
  • Both patient self-reports and parent reports showed no significant differences in QoL scores, but higher NF1 severity was linked to lower physical QoL, and greater visibility was associated with lower physical and social QoL.
  • The research emphasizes that tailored interventions are necessary to address the specific physical and psychological challenges posed by NF1 in children, advocating for comprehensive care approaches.

Background: Aging implies changes in terms of lung function, immune system, and respiratory and extra-respiratory comorbidities. Few studies have specifically addressed the relevance of age on severe asthma burden and control. We aimed to evaluate whether age acts as an independent determinant of asthma severity, in terms of clinical, functional, and inflammatory profile, and to explore potential cofactors that contribute to a more difficult disease control in different age groups.

Background: Belzutifan, a hypoxia-inducible factor 2α inhibitor, showed clinical activity in clear-cell renal-cell carcinoma in early-phase studies.

Methods: In a phase 3, multicenter, open-label, active-controlled trial, we enrolled participants with advanced clear-cell renal-cell carcinoma who had previously received immune checkpoint and antiangiogenic therapies and randomly assigned them, in a 1:1 ratio, to receive 120 mg of belzutifan or 10 mg of everolimus orally once daily until disease progression or unacceptable toxic effects occurred. The dual primary end points were progression-free survival and overall survival.

Background: In Italy, longstanding limitations in the existing reporting system of the inpatient rehabilitation activities have been reported. The Hospital Discharge form (HDF) primarily uses ICD codes that inadequately capture the functional status and rehabilitation needs of patients, impacting equity of care and service evaluation. Therefore, the Italian Ministry of Health (IMH) launched an initiative aimed at developing a new reporting system to be specifically adopted in the inpatient rehabilitation setting.
