Aim: We investigated pretreatment neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) for predicting survival outcomes of atezolizumab plus bevacizumab therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and determined the predictive ability of combined liver reserve-NLR.
Methods: This retrospective, multicenter study enrolled 242 patients receiving atezolizumab plus bevacizumab for unresectable HCC. Pretreatment NLR <2.

Background: Despite advances in surgical techniques, long-term survival after esophagectomy for esophageal cancer remains unacceptably low, and more effective perioperative chemotherapy is expected. However, an important concern regarding the application of postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy is treatment toxicity. We aimed to evaluate the feasibility of adjuvant chemotherapy with S-1 in patients after esophagectomy.

Background: The present study aimed to clarify the efficacy and safety of ramucirumab in a real-world setting, including patients who experienced two or more systemic treatments or whose hepatic reserve was deteriorated.
Methods: In total, 79 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) from 14 institutes throughout Japan were retrospectively analyzed. The response was evaluated using the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) version 1.

Background: We report the real-world distribution of glaucoma types and glaucoma surgeries in each age or sex group in our department.
Methods: The department database of Matsue Red Cross Hospital, a tertiary care hospital, for eyes surgically treated to manage glaucoma between April 2014 and March 2018 was searched. Patient age, sex, disease type, and surgical procedure were collected from the database.

Ovarian seromucinous tumors (SMBTs) are relatively rare, and their carcinogenesis is largely unknown. In this study, the molecular features of SMBTs in Japan are assessed. DNA was extracted from microdissected paraffin-embedded sections from 23 SMBT cases.

Methods: A total of 911 patients who achieved SVR with DCV/ASV were assessed. To evaluate pretreatment factors contributing to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after SVR, univariate and multivariate analyses were performed in all patients, in those with preexisting HCC, and in those without preexisting HCC.

Improvements in the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) recurrence rate and survival have been frequently reported following virus eradication after hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related HCC cure. However, the efficacy of direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy in patients who included those with advanced HCC and decreased hepatic functional reserve is unknown. A comparative examination was retrospectively conducted of 141 patients with hepatitis C who started DAA therapy within 1 year after undergoing curative HCC treatment and showed a sustained viral response (SVR) and 327 patients who underwent curative treatment for HCV-related HCC and did not subsequently receive antiviral therapy.

Current therapeutic approaches for glaucoma aim to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP), which is the only available and reliable strategy proven to control the risk of disease development and progression. Omidenepag isopropyl (OMDI) is a novel topical ocular hypotensive agent that was launched onto the market for the treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension (OHT). After topical instillation and during corneal penetration, OMDI is converted into the active metabolite omidenepag (OMD), which behaves as a non-prostaglandin, selective E-prostanoid subtype 2 (EP2) receptor agonist.

Background: We assessed the relationship between preoperative prognostic nutritional index (PNI) and short- and long-term outcomes among gastric cancer patients because the clinical significance of PNI in these patients remains controversial.
Materials And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 434 consecutive patients who underwent curative laparoscopic gastrectomy for gastric cancer.
Results: Patients with postoperative complications had a significantly poorer overall survival (OS) than those without.

Male breast cancer accounts for approximately 1% of the overall incidence of breast cancer. We report a rare case of intraductal papilloma(intracystic papilloma)in a 73-year-old man, which was suspected to be breast cancer as it presented as an approximately 6 cm mass below the left nipple in various imaging studies. The patient was aware of a mass measuring a few millimeters below the left nipple for 5 years, but had not sought treatment.

Background/aims: Although risk factors of reflux esophagitis (RE) have been investigated in numerous cross-sectional studies, little is known about predictive factors associated with future onset of RE. We investigated time courses of clinical parameters before RE onset by a longitudinal case-control study using health checkup records.
Methods: We used health checkup records between April 2004 and March 2014 at 9 institutions in Japan.

Objective: There have been no reports suggesting a relationship between the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines that encodes the spike glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2 and cerebrovascular disease. A case of repeated cardioembolic stroke after vaccination with the BNT162b2 (Pfizer) COVID-19 mRNA vaccine is presented.
Methods: Imaging and laboratory findings, treatment decisions, and the outcome of this case are presented.

A 51-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of pneumonia after chemotherapy with doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide for left breast cancer. The patient was diagnosed with pulmonary infection by the detection of complex (MABC) in sputum cultures. However, MABC is intrinsically resistant to most of the antibacterial agents, and MABC pulmonary disease outcomes with modern antibiotic treatment are currently the worst among all mycobacterial species.

To assess the roles of preoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) level on the IOP reducing efficacy of microhook trabeculotomy (µLOT), 126 consecutive open-angle glaucomatous eyes (90 primary open angle glaucoma, 36 exfoliation glaucoma) of 126 Japanese subjects (60 men, 66 women; mean age ± standard deviation, 70.5 ± 11.4 years) who underwent µLOT alone (25 eyes, 20%) or combined µLOT and cataract surgery (101 eyes, 80%) were retrospectively included, and subdivided into four groups based on the quartile of preoperative IOP: Q1, ≤15 mmHg; Q2, 15-18 mmHg, Q3, 18-21 mmHg, and Q4, >21 mmHg.

Background: We report a case of chronic retinal necrosis (CRN) combined with cytomegalovirus (CMV) corneal endotheliitis.
Case Presentation: An 80-year old man was diagnosed with CRN that developed after tube shunt surgery with vitrectomy for secondary glaucoma associated with CMV corneal endotheliitis. After the use of oral valganciclovir and panretinal photocoagulation, the retinal lesion resolved rapidly and he has maintained visual acuity better than before the onset of CRN.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) develop in the digestive tract, mainly in the stomach, small intestine, colon, or esophagus. However, primary tumors with the same pathologic features as GISTs have been reported to occur outside of the digestive tract and are called extragastrointestinal stromal tumor (EGIST). We herein report a rare case of EGIST arising from the greater omentum in a patient with abdominal pain caused by intraperitoneal bleeding from the tumor.

Precis: Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implantation in eyes with damaged iris-lens diaphragms ("1-chamber" eyes) resulted in mean intraocular pressure (IOP) and antiglaucoma medications decreases of 66% and 59% (P<0.0001 for both), respectively, at the mean 23-month follow-up.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to report the results of AGV implantation with pars plana tube insertion to control IOP in glaucomatous eyes with damaged iris-lens diaphragms ("1-chamber" eyes).
