Background: The inflammatory response plays a crucial role in tumor development. Inflammatory markers are recognized prognostic factors in many types of cancer, including gastric cancer. However, the correlation between inflammatory markers and prognosis in remnant gastric cancer (RGC) remains unclear.

Patients with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome (HBOC) are associated with an increased risk of developing pancreatic cancer (PC) than the general population. There is no consensus about the clinical value of F-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in patients with HBOC. We report a patient with HBOC in whom PC was detected incidentally by PET/CT.

Background: Polymyxin-B direct hemoperfusion (PMX-DHP) is an endotoxin adsorption column-based blood purification therapy. Since one of the most potent effects of PMX-DHP is blood pressure elevations, it may be the most effective when it is introduced at the time when the need for vasopressors is the greatest, which, in turn, may reduce mortality.
Methods: A multicenter retrospective study was conducted at 24 ICUs in Japan.

Background: Upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is uncommon. In advanced cases, radical nephroureterectomy (RNU) alone is not curative, and recurrence and metastasis are likely to occur. Adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) is an evidence-based treatment.

Objective: We investigated preoperative patient factors associated with prognosis in 263 bladder cancer (BC) patients undergoing radical cystectomy (RC). We also developed new risk stratification models for prognosis.
Methods: This retrospective study included patients treated at Tottori University Hospital and affiliated hospitals between January 2010 and December 2019.

Chronic encapsulated intracerebral hematoma is a rare type of intracerebral hemorrhage. Reportedly, it is associated with vascular malformations, including arteriovenous malformations, cavernous hemangiomas, microaneurysms, and venous malformations. Recently, an association between chronic encapsulated intracerebral hematoma and stereotactic radiosurgery for arteriovenous malformations has been reported.

Background: Platinum/taxane (TC) chemotherapy with debulking surgery stays the mainstay of the treatment in ovarian cancer patients with peritoneal metastasis, and recently its novel modality, intraperitoneal carboplatin with dose-dense paclitaxel (ddTCip), was shown to have greater therapeutic impact. Nevertheless, the response varies among patients and consequent recurrence, or relapse often occurs. Discovery of therapeutic response predictor to ddTCip and/or TC therapy is eagerly awaited to improve the treatment outcome.

Purpose: This study investigated the prognostic value of the geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) in patients undergoing curative gastrectomy for remnant gastric cancer (RGC).
Methods: This multicenter retrospective study included 105 patients with RGC of ≥ 65 years of age who underwent curative gastrectomy at 10 institutions in Japan between January 2000 and December 2016. Postoperative complications, overall survival (OS), and disease-specific survival (DSS) were analyzed.

A suture placed next to a dissected liver section during the initial hepatectomy may become an unlikely intrahepatic foreign body granuloma. In this report, we describe a case where a silk suture in the liver section plane placed during initial hepatectomy for synchronous colon cancer metastasis became an intrahepatic foreign body granuloma that exhibited fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) accumulation on positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT). The granuloma was resected as the second metachronous liver metastatic lesion.

Malignant pericardial effusion is an uncommon metastatic manifestation of ovarian carcinoma. Few cases of ovarian serous carcinoma have been previously reported. Ovarian clear cell carcinoma is the second most common histologic subtype in East Asian countries and is a relatively rare in Western countries.

The revised World Health Organization classification of cervical cancer divides adenocarcinomas into human papillomavirus-associated (HPVa) and -independent (HPVi) types; the HPVi type is represented by the gastric type. The treatment outcomes of locally advanced adenocarcinoma (LaAC), based on this classification, are understudied. We investigated the outcomes of patients with HPVa and HPVi LaACs.

Background: Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing has been increasingly recognized as the cause of upper urinary tract infection (UTI) in children. We have been using flomoxef at our department since 2017 as the first-line empiric therapy for children diagnosed with UTIs, and we avoid using carbapenems, which are considered the first-line treatment for ESBL-producing . However, reports on the use of flomoxef for UTIs are limited, especially for pediatric patients.

Gastroduodenal peptic ulcers are the main cause of nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB). We believe that recent advances in endoscopic techniques and devices for diagnosing upper gastrointestinal tract tumors have advanced hemostasis for UGIB. However, few prospective multicenter studies have examined how these changes affect the prognosis.

Purpose: The goal of this study was to determine which markers are the most useful as first- and second-line pre-treatment markers in patients with unresectable or recurrent gastric cancer (URGC).
Methods: This study included 101 URGC patients who were treated with first- and second-line chemotherapy. Several prognostic scores based on nutrition and inflammation were analyzed using a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis to determine the most useful prognostic marker.

A 46-year-old man was referred to our hospital for the examination of a flat elevated lesion with an erosion-like depression, located on the greater curvature of the antrum. Endoscopic submucosal dissection was performed. Histological findings of the resected specimen demonstrated a well-differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma with a diameter of 12 mm.

Introduction: We previously reported that preoperative human papillomavirus (HPV) type 16/18 positivity and postoperative high-risk (HR)-HPV test positivity are associated with abnormal postoperative cytology. In this study, we further examined whether preoperative and postoperative HR-HPV genotyping could predict cytological abnormalities and the risk of additional surgery.
Methods: Patients who underwent cervical conization at our hospital between July 2009 and June 2018 were enrolled.

Background: Urosepsis is an acute life-threating disease, and some cases show refractory outcome to therapy. In an aging society of developed countries, characteristics of urosepsis are becoming complicated. We performed a comprehensive investigation regarding the clinical and social aspects that are related to refractory outcomes in urosepsis patients.

Cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumors are a common type of benign tumors, which are similar to vestibular schwannomas; however, the incidence of CPA metastasis is rare. Moreover, brain metastasis from gastric tumors is a rare occurrence, with an incidence of less than 1% in clinical cases. In this study, we report the case of a 71-year-old man who was admitted to our hospital with symptoms of nausea and gait instability for the past 1 week.

A cholesterol granuloma (CG) is characterized by the presence of cholesterol crystals that cause a chronic granulomatous reaction in an enclosed space. It occurs most commonly in the head and neck region, particularly in the middle ear. Although CGs in the maxilla have also been reported, odontogenic cysts in conjunction with CGs in the maxilla are very rare.

Aim: To evaluate the effect of canagliflozin, a sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, on albuminuria and the decline of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in participants with type 2 diabetes and microalbuminuria.
Methods: The CANPIONE study is a multicentre, randomized, parallel-group and open-labelled study consisting of a unique 24-week preintervention period, during which the rate of eGFR decline before intervention is estimated, followed by a 52-week intervention and a 4-week washout period. Participants with a geometric mean urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) of 50 and higher and less than 300 mg/g in two consecutive first-morning voids at two different time points, and an eGFR of 45 ml/min/1.
