Dynamically predicting patient survival probabilities using longitudinal measurements has become of great importance with routine data collection becoming more common. Many existing models utilize a multi-step landmarking approach for this problem, mostly due to its ease of use and versatility but unfortunately most fail to do so appropriately. In this article we make use of multivariate functional principal component analysis to summarize the available longitudinal information, and employ a Cox proportional hazards model for prediction.

Background: Despite knowledge of qualitative changes that occur on ultrasound in tendinopathy, there is currently no objective and reliable means to quantify the severity or prognosis of tendinopathy on ultrasound.

Objective: The primary objective of this study is to produce a quantitative and automated means of inferring potential structural changes in tendinopathy by developing and implementing an algorithm which performs a texture based segmentation of tendon ultrasound (US) images.

Method: A model-based segmentation approach is used which combines Gaussian mixture models, Markov random field theory and grey-level co-occurrence (GLCM) features.

In three water-supply reservoirs in the catchment area of the Odra River (Czech Republic), a special fish stock was monitored for control of health to estimate the mutagenic effect of chemicals. The results contribute to obtaining initial information about the morphology of erythrocyte abnormalities classified in 21 categories in 16 fish species in reservoirs with abundant salmonids (the Morávka Reservoir) or with the prevalence of cyprinids (the Kružberk and Šance Reservoirs), not directly exposed to the adverse environmental effects such as industrial, urban, agricultural and intensive farming activities. The different intensities and prevalence of nuclear abnormalities (NA) and cytoplasmic abnormalities (CA) in fish from the same reservoir habitat show that to be able to obtain an objective view of the genotoxic risk of chemicals, it is necessary to respect the different requirements of the fish for the exploitation of the food available in the biotope and to subject all representatives of piscivorous, omnivorous and benthophagous fishes in the reservoir to cytogenetic analysis.

The emergence and maintenance of tree species diversity in tropical forests is commonly attributed to the Janzen-Connell (JC) hypothesis, which states that growth of seedlings is suppressed in the proximity of conspecific adult trees. As a result, a JC distribution due to a density-dependent negative feedback emerges in the form of a (transient) pattern where conspecific seedling density is highest at intermediate distances away from parent trees. Several studies suggest that the required density-dependent feedbacks behind this pattern could result from interactions between trees and soil-borne pathogens.

Complex biological processes involve collective behavior of entities (bacteria, cells, animals) over many length and time scales and can be described by discrete models that track individuals or by continuum models involving densities and fields. We consider hybrid stochastic agent-based models of branching morphogenesis and angiogenesis (new blood vessel creation from preexisting vasculature), which treat cells as individuals that are guided by underlying continuous chemical and/or mechanical fields. In these descriptions, leader (tip) cells emerge from existing branches and follower (stalk) cells build the new sprout in their wake.

We study motility-induced phase separation (MIPS) in living active matter, in which cells interact through chemical signaling, or quorum sensing. In contrast to previous theories of MIPS, our multiscale continuum model accounts explicitly for genetic regulation of signal production and motility. Through analysis and simulations, we derive a new criterion for the onset of MIPS that depends on features of the genetic network.

A key challenge for public health policymakers is determining when an infectious disease outbreak has finished. Following a period without cases, an estimate of the probability that no further cases will occur in future (the end-of-outbreak probability) can be used to inform whether or not to declare an outbreak over. An existing quantitative approach (the Nishiura method), based on a branching process transmission model, allows the end-of-outbreak probability to be approximated from disease incidence time series, the offspring distribution and the serial interval distribution.

Between December 1855 and March 1856, a public dispute raged, in British national newspapers and locally published pamphlets, between two teachers at the University of Oxford: the mathematical lecturer Francis Ashpitel and Bartholomew Price, the professor of natural philosophy. The starting point for these exchanges was the particularly poor results that had come out of the final mathematics examinations in Oxford that December. Ashpitel, as one of the examiners, stood accused of setting questions that were too difficult for the ordinary student, with the consequence that, in Price's view, further mathematical study in Oxford - never as robust as in Cambridge - would be discouraged.

Background: Functional ultrasound imaging (fUS) is an emerging imaging technique that indirectly measures neural activity via changes in blood volume. Chronic fUS imaging during cognitive tasks in freely moving animals faces multiple exceptional challenges: performing large durable craniotomies with chronic implants, designing behavioral experiments matching the hemodynamic timescale, stabilizing the ultrasound probe during freely moving behavior, accurately assessing motion artifacts, and validating that the animal can perform cognitive tasks while tethered.

We have calculated an entropy or information measure of previously reported experimentally determined temporal dominance of sensations (TDS) data of texture attributes for two sets of emulsion filled gels throughout the mastication cycle. The samples were emulsion filled gels and two-layered emulsion filled gels. We find that the entropy measure follows an average curve, which is different for each set.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, human behavior change as a result of nonpharmaceutical interventions such as isolation may have induced directional selection for viral evolution. By combining previously published empirical clinical data analysis and multi-level mathematical modeling, we find that the SARS-CoV-2 variants selected for as the virus evolved from the pre-Alpha to the Delta variant had earlier and higher peak in viral load dynamics but a shorter duration of infection. Selection for increased transmissibility shapes the viral load dynamics, and the isolation measure is likely to be a driver of these evolutionary transitions.
