Methodologies and characteristics of studies investigating the cost of the palliative phase of cancer: a systematic review.

Purpose: Improvements in the treatment of advanced cancer have increased life expectancy but have also increased the costs to healthcare systems, patients and their families. A systematic review is needed to summarize research work on the cost of cancer. The primary objective was to describe the characteristics and methodology of studies investigating the cost of cancer during the palliative phase.

Diagnostic value of 11C-Methionine PET-CT imaging in persistent or recurrent Cushing's disease after surgery.

Introduction: Equivocal or negative pituitary magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings raise a significant challenge in the management of persistent or recurrent Cushing's disease (CD), compromising the chances of success of a further transsphenoidal surgery (TSS). The aim of our study was to determine the diagnostic utility of 11C-methionine (MET) positron emission tomography coupled with computerized tomography (PET/CT) in localizing the residual or relapsing corticotroph adenoma.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the results of 11C-MET PET/CT performed in two tertiary medical centers between May 2002 and November 2023 in 22 patients with a persisting or recurrent CD after initial TSS and equivocal or negative pituitary MRI findings.

Previous treatment with anthracycline does not affect the course of sepsis in cancer patients: Retrospective cohort study.

Background: Cancer patients who are exposed to sepsis and had previous chemotherapy may have increased severity. Among chemotherapeutic agents, anthracyclines have been associated with cardiac toxicity. Like other chemotherapeutic agents, they may cause endothelial toxicity.

Nebulized aminoglycosides for ventilator-associated pneumonia: Methodological considerations and lessons from experimental studies.

Aminoglycosides are concentration-dependent antibiotics exerting a bactericidal effect when concentrations at the site of infection are equal to or greater than 5 times the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC). When administered intravenously, they exhibit poor lung penetration and high systemic renal and ototoxicity, imposing to restrict their administration to 5 days. Experimental studies conducted in anesthetized and mechanically ventilated sheep and pigs provide evidence that high doses of nebulized aminoglycosides induce a rapid and potent bacterial killing in the infected lung parenchyma.

Natural Causes of Sports- and Recreation-Related Deaths in the General Population: A 14-Year Review in Québec, Canada.

Background: This study analyzed trends in the frequencies and rates of natural deaths associated with sport and recreation activities in Québec, Canada, from January 2006 to December 2019, and investigated their etiology and characteristics.

Methods: This descriptive retrospective study utilized data from coroner reports, as well as autopsy and police reports. Activity-specific incidence rates were calculated using participation data from the (ÉBARS) and Canadian census population data.

A systematic review of the impact of artificial intelligence on educational outcomes in health professions education.

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) has a variety of potential applications in health professions education and assessment; however, measurable educational impacts of AI-based educational strategies on learning outcomes have not been systematically evaluated.

Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted using electronic databases (CINAHL Plus, EMBASE, Proquest, Pubmed, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science) to identify studies published until October 1st 2024, analyzing the impact of AI-based tools/interventions in health profession assessment and/or training on educational outcomes. The present analysis follows the PRISMA 2020 statement for systematic reviews and the structured approach to reporting in health care education for evidence synthesis.

A Multimarker Approach to Identify Microbial Bioindicators for Coral Reef Health Monitoring-Case Study in La Réunion Island.

The marine microbiome arouses an increasing interest, aimed at better understanding coral reef biodiversity, coral resilience, and identifying bioindicators of ecosystem health. The present study is a microbiome mining of three environmentally contrasted sites along the Hermitage fringing reef of La Réunion Island (Western Indian Ocean). This mining aims to identify bioindicators of reef health to assist managers in preserving the fringing reefs of La Réunion.

A scoping review of privacy and utility metrics in medical synthetic data.

The use of synthetic data is a promising solution to facilitate the sharing and reuse of health-related data beyond its initial collection while addressing privacy concerns. However, there is still no consensus on a standardized approach for systematically evaluating the privacy and utility of synthetic data, impeding its broader adoption. In this work, we present a comprehensive review and systematization of current methods for evaluating synthetic health-related data, focusing on both privacy and utility aspects.

Feasibility study of the digital tool Max for the patient-provided medication list in the medication reconciliation process prior to hospitalisation: patient willingness and usability, time saved and reliability.

Purpose: More than 20% of prescription errors in hospitals are due to an incomplete medication history. Medication reconciliation is a solution to decrease unintentional discrepancies between medications taken at home and hospital prescriptions. It is a normalised clinical activity but it is time consuming.

Despite the importance of ocular surface in human physiology and diseases, little is known about ion channel expression, properties and regulation in ocular epithelial cells. Furthermore, human primary epithelial cells have rarely been studied in favor of rat, mouse and especially rabbit animal models. Here, we developed primary human Meibomian gland (hMGEC) and conjunctival (hConEC) epithelial cells.

Pancreatic cancer (PCa) is one of the most devastating cancers with few clinical signs and no truly effective therapy. In recent years, our team has demonstrated that nucleolin antagonists such as N6L could be a therapeutic alternative for this disease. In order to study a possible clinic development of N6L (multivalent pseudopeptide), we undertook to study the effect of combination of N6L with chemotherapies classically used for PCa on the survival of pancreatic cancer cells.

Combination of clinical frailty score and myostatin concentrations as mortality predictor in hemodialysis patients.

Background And Aims: Frailty is common among hemodialysis (HD) patients. Its assessment is usually based on clinical criteria. In the present work, we evaluated the interest of combining clinical frailty score and biomarkers to predict mortality of chronic HD patients.

Purpose Of Review: Febrile neutropenia as a complication of cytotoxic chemotherapies, remains a major event in the medical journey of hematology and oncology patients. In this review, we are trying to review the new elements and highlights that are shaping febrile neutropenia in nowadays.

Recent Findings: Introduction of risk-stratification, expanded use of granulocyte-colony stimulating factor and oral treatment for selected patients and rapid administration of antibiotics revolutionized the treatment of febrile neutropenia.

Neoadjuvant immunotherapy in melanoma: pathological response as a surrogate endpoint?

Purpose Of Review: This review evaluates by analyzing recent studies whether pathological complete response (pCR) can be used as a reliable surrogate marker for overall survival (OS) in melanoma treated with neoadjuvant immunotherapy.

Recent Findings: Trials like Neo-Combi, Neo-Trio and COMBI-Neo show that pCR is crucial for long-term success in targeted therapy for melanoma, while studies like OpACIN-neo and SWOG S1801 demonstrate that immunotherapy can provide durable benefits even with partial responses. Findings from NADINA and the INMC analysis highlight that immunotherapy achieves higher pathologic response rates and improved survival outcomes, offering broader benefits compared to the pCR-dependent outcomes of targeted therapy.

Multicenter validation of secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis diagnostic criteria.

Background: Five fulfilled hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH)-2004 criteria, and the HScore are widely used and recommended by international expert consensus to diagnose secondary HLH. Both diagnostic scores have never been validated in heterogeneous patient cohorts of secondary HLH patients. We aimed to systematically optimize and validate diagnostic criteria of secondary HLH using a multicenter approach.

[The role of volatile organic compounds in plant-insect communication].

Insects and flowering plants are the most abundant and diverse multicellular organisms on Earth, accounting for 75% of known species. Their evolution has been largely interdependent since the so-called Angiosperm Terrestrial Revolution (100-50 Mya), when the explosion of plant diversity stimulated the evolution of pollinating and herbivorous insects. Plant-insect interactions rely heavily on chemical communication via volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Occurrence and management of thrombosis recurrence and bleeding in low-molecular-weight heparin-treated patients with cancer-associated thrombosis: a French nationwide cohort study.

Background: Rates of venous thromboembolism (VTE) recurrence and bleeding remain high in patients with cancer who are prescribed anticoagulants (ACs) such as low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) after an initial VTE event.

Objectives: To identify patient characteristics associated with VTE recurrence and bleeding in patients receiving LMWH for cancer-associated VTE and to explore secondary AC management and clinical outcomes in these patients.

Methods: An observational study was conducted using nationwide French data for adults with active cancer who were hospitalized with VTE in 2013-2018 and were reimbursed for LMWH ≤ 30 days after hospital discharge.

Introduction: arterial hypertension (AH) may persist beyond three months postpartum after preeclampsia, increasing the long-term risk of cardiovascular complications. Near-Field Mixing in a Coaxial Dual Swirled Injector.

Improving mixing between two coaxial swirled jets is a subject of interest for the development of next generations of fuel injectors. This is particularly crucial for hydrogen injectors, where the separate introduction of fuel and oxidizer is preferred to mitigate the risk of flashback. Raman scattering is used to measure the mean compositions and to examine how mixing between fuel and air streams evolves along the axial direction in the near-field of the injector outlet.

Nanoporous solids offer a wide range of functionalities for industrial, environmental, and energy applications. However, only a limited number of porous materials are responsive, the nanopore dynamically alters its size and shape in response to external stimuli such as temperature, pressure, light or the presence of specific molecular stimuli adsorbed inside the voids deforming the framework. Adsorption-induced structural deformation of porous solids can result in unique counterintuitive phenomena.

Complete shielding of multivitamins to reduce toxic peroxides in the parenteral nutrition (C-SMART-PN): A randomized controlled pilot study.

Background: When exposed to ambient light, parenteral nutrition (PN) contamination with peroxides almost doubles, which increases oxidative stress in preterm infants, contributing to the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia. The American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) recommends complete PN photoprotection to reduce peroxide contamination and optimize its integrity but acknowledges the challenges of its implementation. In this study, a novel photoprotection procedure was tested for its effectiveness in reducing peroxide load and limiting ascorbic acid degradation, and for its feasibility and effectiveness in reducing urinary peroxide levels in preterm infants.
