To develop novel mineral-filled composites and assess their enhanced properties (stiffness, a good balance between mechanical strength and impact resistance, greater temperature stability), a high-impact polypropylene copolymer (PPc) matrix containing an elastomeric discrete phase was melt mixed with natural CaSO β-anhydrite II (AII) produced from gypsum rocks. First, in a prior investigation, the PPc composites filled with AII (without any modification) displayed enhanced stiffness, which is correlated with the relative content of the filler. The tensile and impact strengths dramatically decreased, especially at high filling (40 wt.

Nowadays, due to their natural availability, renewability, biodegradability, nontoxicity, light weight and relatively low cost, natural fibers, especially lignocellulosic fibers, present attractive potential to substitute non-eco-friendly synthetic fibers. In this study, fibers were used, thanks to their low lignin content, as an alternative of renewable resource for the production of cellulosic fibers with suitable characteristics and minimal time and energy consumption. In fact, due to their valuable chemical composition, it was possible to remove the amorphous fractions and impurities from the fiber surface by applying ultrasounds coupled with alkaline treatment (80 °C, 5 wt.

Nitric oxide (NO) selective sensors capable of sensing in a hot-gas environment are increasingly required for monitoring combustion and processes yielding high temperature gas containing NO. This work reports the fabrication of sensors by a facile deposition of water-based ink blended commercial WO powders spray coating on sensor platforms fitted with Au-interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) and the characterization of their sensing performances under hot NO-containing air at temperatures exceeding 500 °C. After deposition and heat treatment of the sensing material on the substrate fitted with Au-IDE at 700 °C, the composition and morphology of the active material were analyzed and the presence of a single phase, fine particulates of WO, has been confirmed by XRD and SEM, respectively.

The melt-mixing of polylactide (PLA) with micro- and/or nanofillers is a key method used to obtain specific end-use characteristics and improvements of properties. So-called "insoluble" CaSO (CS) β-anhydrite II (AII) is a mineral filler recently considered for the industry of polymer composites. First, the study proves that AII made from natural gypsum by a specifically thermal treatment is highly stable compared to other CS forms.

This paper presents a methodology to quantify oxidizing and reducing gases using n-type and p-type chemiresistive sensors, respectively. Low temperature sensor heating with pulsed UV or visible light modulation is used together with the application of the fast Fourier transform (FFT) to extract sensor response features. These features are further processed via principal component analysis (PCA) and principal component regression (PCR) for achieving gas discrimination and building concentration prediction models with R values up to 98% and RMSE values as low as 5% for the total gas concentration range studied.

Beilstein J Nanotechnol

August 2018

Laboratory for Chemistry of Novel Materials - Center for Innovation and Research in Materials and Polymers - CIRMAP, University of Mons, Mons, Belgium.

The nanoscale morphology of photoactive hybrid heterojunctions plays a key role in the performances of hybrid solar cells. In this work, the heterojunctions consist of a nanocolumnar TiO surface covalently grafted with a monolayer of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) functionalized with carboxylic groups (-COOH). Through a joint analysis of the photovoltaic properties at the nanoscale by photoconductive-AFM (PC-AFM) and surface photovoltage imaging, we investigated the physical mechanisms taking place locally during the photovoltaic process and the correlation to the nanoscale morphology.

Fillers are widely used to improve the thermomechanical response of polymer matrices, yet often in an unpredictable manner because the relationships between the mechanical properties of the composite material and the primary (chemical) structure of its molecular components have remained elusive so far. Here, we report on a combined theoretical and experimental study of the structural and thermomechanical properties of carbon nanotube (CNT)-reinforced polybenzoxazine resins, as prepared from two monomers that only differ by the presence of two ethyl side groups. Remarkably, while addition of CNT is found to have no impact on the glass-transition temperature ( T) of the ethyl-decorated resin, the corresponding ethyl-free composite features a surge by ∼47 °C (50 °C) in T, from molecular dynamics simulations (dynamic mechanical analysis measurements), as compared to the neat resin.

In this article, we describe a NO₂ sensor consisting of a coating based on lutetium bisphthalocyanine (LuPc₂) in mesoporous silica. The sensor exploits the absorption spectrum change of this material which strongly and reversibly decreases in contact with NO₂. NO₂ is measured by following the amplitude change in the reflected spectrum of the coating deposited on the tip of a silica fibre.

Artificial light-harvesting systems have until now not been able to self-assemble into structures with a large photon capture cross-section that upon a stimulus reversibly can switch into an inactive state. Here we describe a simple and robust FLFL-dipeptide construct to which a meso-tetraphenylporphyrin has been appended and which self-assembles to fibrils, platelets or nanospheres depending on the solvent composition. The fibrils, functioning as quenched antennas, give intense excitonic couplets in the electronic circular dichroism spectra which are mirror imaged if the unnatural FDFD-analogue is used.

Restrained properties of "green" degradable products drive the creation of materials with innovative structures and retained eco-attributes. Herein, we introduce the creation of impact modifiers in the form of core-shell (CS) particles toward the creation of "green" composite materials. Particles with CS structure constituted of PLA stereocomplex (PLASC) and a rubbery phase of poly(ε-caprolactone--d,l-lactide) (P[CL--LA]) were successfully achieved by spray droplet atomization.
