Background: Brain metastases are a common complication of cancer and approximately 20% of cancer patients develop them over time. Presently palliative whole-brain radiotherapy is used as a palliative treatment for brain metastases because of its cost-effectiveness and easy availability, especially in patients with multiple metastases who are not candidates for surgery or Stereotactic radiosurgery. This study aims to determine the survival in patients who have received palliative whole-brain radiotherapy for brain metastases and to evaluate some of the prognostic factors determining survival in patients with brain metastases.

This study examines the correlation between the weight-bearing (WB) long leg radiograph (LLR)-derived hip-knee-ankle angle (HKAA) and intraoperative supine computer-assisted surgery (CAS)-derived HKAA measurements at the beginning and end of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The primary aim of the study was to determine if WB alignment could be mimicked or inferred based on intraoperative alignment findings. We conducted a prospective analysis from a cohort of 129 TKAs undergoing a CAS TKA at a single center by a single surgeon.

BSc, MBBS, MHM, FRANZCOG, Staff Specialist Gynaecologist, Department of Gynaecology, Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Hospital, Brisbane, Qld; Gynaecology Visiting Medical Officer, Mater Private Hospital, South Brisbane, Qld; Associate Lecturer, School of Medicine, University of Queensland, Brisbane, Qld.

Background: Dysmenorrhoea is the most common gynaecologic condition affecting people assigned female at birth and has significant effects on immediate and long‑term quality of life. Effective treatments are widely available at low cost but often have poor uptake. There is growing evidence that a significant proportion of people with severe dysmenorrhoea will develop other persistent pain syndromes and dysmenorrhoea might be a key contributor to the development of those conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • The study involved analyzing CT scans of the lumbar spine in older adults to understand the relationship between intradiscal vacuum phenomenon (IDVP) and disc degeneration over time.
  • Results showed that while most cases of IDVP stayed at a similar severity, some worsened, improved, or fused, with new cases developing in some patients during the study period.
  • Interestingly, the presence of IDVP did not correlate with significantly worse back pain among participants, suggesting that back pain experiences vary despite degeneration severity.

Background: Catheter ablation (CA) for symptomatic atrial fibrillation (AF) offers the best outcomes for patients. Despite the benefits of CA, a significant proportion of patients suffer a recurrence; hence, there is scope to potentially improve outcomes through technical innovations such as ablation index (AI) guidance during AF ablation. We present real-world 5-year follow-up data of AI-guided pulmonary vein isolation.

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Global TAVR Activity: The COVID-TAVI Study.

JACC Cardiovasc Interv

February 2024

Department of Cardiology, Galway University Hospital, Galway, Ireland; School of Medicine, University of Galway, Galway, Ireland. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The COVID-19 pandemic led to significant treatment delays for patients needing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), with a marked decrease in procedure volumes during the first two waves of the pandemic.
  • The study analyzed TAVR case data from 130 centers in 61 countries, finding a 15% drop in cases during the first wave and 7% in the second, particularly affecting regions like Africa, Central-South America, and Asia.
  • Factors such as hospital type (private vs public), urban vs rural location, low procedure volumes, a country's socioeconomic status, and stringent public health measures contributed to these reductions, highlighting the need for improved public health policies for future health crises.

Introduction Esophageal cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide. Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery is the standard treatment for locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Pathological complete response (pCR) after surgery is associated with better outcomes in terms of overall survival and disease-free survival.

Introduction: Gas leaks polluting the operating room are common in laparoscopy. Studies defining methods for sensitive leak characterisation and mechanical mitigation in real world settings are, however, lacking.

Methods: Mobile optical gas imagers (both a miniaturised Schlieren system and sensitive tripod-mounted near-infrared carbon dioxide camera (GF343, FLIR)) prospectively defined trocar-related gas leaks occurring either spontaneously or with instrumentation during planned laparoscopic surgery at three hospitals.

Immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) benefits some patients with triple-negative breast cancer, but what distinguishes responders from non-responders is unclear. Because ICB targets cell-cell interactions, we investigated the impact of multicellular spatial organization on response, and explored how ICB remodels the tumour microenvironment. We show that cell phenotype, activation state and spatial location are intimately linked, influence ICB effect and differ in sensitive versus resistant tumours early on-treatment.
