Objectives: Prognostic models have the potential to aid clinical decision-making after hip fracture. This systematic review aimed to identify, critically appraise, and summarize multivariable prediction models for mortality or other long-term recovery outcomes occurring at least 30 days after hip fracture.

Introduction: Early discontinuation of endocrine therapy (ET) is higher among patients with early breast cancer (EBC) compared to patients with metastatic hormone receptor-positive (HR+) breast cancer (MBC). In our clinical experience the reasons for this may include a significant burden of ET side effects impacting quality of life (QOL) in patients with EBC. We hypothesized that QOL is lower in patients with HR + EBC compared to patients with HR + MBC on ET.

Comparative characterisation of extracellular vesicles from canine and human plasma: a necessary step in biomarker discovery.

Extracellular Vesicles (EV) have become an interesting focus as novel biomarkers of disease and are increasingly reported upon in humans and other species. The Minimal Information for Studies of Extracellular Vesicles 2018 (MISEV2018) guidelines were published to improve rigor and standardisation within the EV field and provide a framework for the reliable isolation and characterisation of EV populations. Metabolomics is a laboratory technique capable of providing insights into the metabolic pathways that are responsible for a number of physiologic or pathologic events through the analysis of a biological fluid (such as blood, urine, and sputum) using proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy or mass spectrometry.

Women in Irish urology: An examination of female representation amongst attendees of the Irish Society of Urology annual meeting (2008-2020).

Background: There is underrepresentation of women at surgical conferences. We examine the representation of women in Irish urology by looking at gender balance within the Irish Society of Urology (ISU) conference.

Aims: ISU programmes over thirteen years from 2008 to 2020 were assessed and female representation in session chairs, guest speakers, poster and oral presentations identified.

Electric scooter-related triple cervical artery dissection.

A 34-year-old female presented to the emergency department with neck pain, dysphonia and dysphagia ten days after a fall from an electric scooter. Subsequent computed tomography of the neck revealed bilateral vertebral artery and unilateral internal carotid artery non-occlusive dissections, which were managed with antiplatelet therapy. This case describes mechanisms of injury, clinical presentation, imaging appearances, and subsequent management of cervical artery dissection.

Concerns about stigmatisation of those suffering from mental ill-health have been expressed for many years, leading to numerous anti-stigma campaigns. Previous Irish studies demonstrated an improvement in the tone and content of articles over time.

Glomangiomatosis of the lower leg.

This paper demonstrates a case of multiple glomangiomas, or glomangiomatosis, including clinical presentation, imaging appearances, and subsequent management. Differentiating features from typical glomus tumors are described. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a glomangioma involving the distal tibiofibular syndesmosis.

Background: Interleukin-1 (IL-1) blocking agents have been used for treating severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), on the premise that their immunomodulatory effect might be beneficial in people with COVID-19.

Objectives: To assess the effects of IL-1 blocking agents compared with standard care alone or with placebo on effectiveness and safety outcomes in people with COVID-19. We will update this assessment regularly.

Patients with connective tissue disease (CTD) and advanced lung disease are often considered suboptimal candidates for lung transplantation (LTx) due to their underlying medical complexity and potential surgical risk. There is substantial variability across LTx centers regarding the evaluation and listing of these patients. The International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation-supported consensus document on lung transplantation in patients with CTD standardization aims to clarify definitions of each disease state included under the term CTD, to describe the extrapulmonary manifestations of each disease requiring consideration before transplantation, and to outline the absolute contraindications to transplantation allowing risk stratification during the evaluation and selection of candidates for LTx.

Methods: Single centre prospective randomized trial conducted in the Mater Misericordiae University teaching hospital in Dublin Ireland.

An Unusual Case of Gastrointestinal Bleeding in Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma.

Approximately 340 patients are diagnosed with renal cell cancer (RCC) in Ireland each year. Metastatic spread to the lung, lymph nodes and bones is common. Metastatic spread to the gastrointestinal tract, including the small bowel, is a rare phenomenon.

Enhancing efficiency in a cardiac investigations department by increasing remote patient monitoring.

Objective: Remote monitoring (RM) of patients with cardiac rhythm management devices enables healthcare teams to effectively and efficiently monitor patients with heart problems without the requirement in-person patient visits. RM has been associated with safer and higher quality care but was not being used to its full potential in this setting. Cardiac rhythm management had observed an average implant rate of 295 devices per year over the past 13 years, resulting in a five-fold growth in patient follow-up in clinics.
