Light-induced transitions between the trans and cis isomer of triazatriangulenium-based azobenzene derivatives on Au(111) surfaces were observed directly by scanning tunneling microscopy, allowing atomic-scale studies of the photoisomerization kinetics. Although the azobenzene units in these adlayers are free-standing and spaced at uniform distances of 1.26 nm, their photoswitching depends on the isomeric state of the surrounding molecules and, specifically, is accelerated by neighboring cis isomers.

Background: The first summarising checklist of Ukrainian Chironomidae (Insecta, Diptera) consisted of 302 species. Compared to other European countries, it is obvious that the real chironomid diversity of Ukraine has not been fully documented and greater effort is needed to discover the actual richness of this family. Thus, our survey focused on the chironomid fauna of some alpine lakes situated above the treeline in the Ukrainian Carpathians (a part of the Eastern Carpathians) aiming to contribute to the knowledge of the Ukrainian chironomid fauna and create the basis for more comprehensive neo- and palaeolimnological studies of these, regionally, little-known ecosystems.

The DIRAC code for relativistic molecular calculations.

J Chem Phys

May 2020

Department of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, NL-1081HV Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

DIRAC is a freely distributed general-purpose program system for one-, two-, and four-component relativistic molecular calculations at the level of Hartree-Fock, Kohn-Sham (including range-separated theory), multiconfigurational self-consistent-field, multireference configuration interaction, electron propagator, and various flavors of coupled cluster theory. At the self-consistent-field level, a highly original scheme, based on quaternion algebra, is implemented for the treatment of both spatial and time reversal symmetry. DIRAC features a very general module for the calculation of molecular properties that to a large extent may be defined by the user and further analyzed through a powerful visualization module.

Department of Comparative Religion, Comenius University in Bratislava, Gondova 2, 811 02, Bratislava, Slovakia.

The paper provides a critical overview of the perspective that stratifies society in India into a series of different classes, resulting in the mobility of particular castes or social groups. For this purpose, the study presents ethnographic material concerning the foundation and development of a non-Brahman temple in the Tamil low-caste settlement of Line Kollai, which is in a neighbourhood close to the city of Krishnagiri. The presented ethnographic material shows how a religious folk cult has been established on the grounds of actualized and modified motives in the vernacular environment.

Article Synopsis
  • Accurate predictions of hyperfine structure (HFS) constants are crucial in chemistry and physics for various applications, including determining nuclear properties and testing new theoretical methods.
  • The study evaluates the effectiveness of the relativistic coupled cluster method in calculating HFS constants using a finite-field approach, focusing on cesium (Cs) and barium fluoride (BaF).
  • The research identifies that the largest uncertainty in the HFS constant calculations comes from higher-order correlation effects, leading to a conservative uncertainty estimate of about 5.5%, while the actual calculated values are within 1% of experimental measurements.

Faculty of Natural Sciences, Matej Bel University, Tajovsky street 40, 974 01 Banska Bystrica, Slovakia..

The Chironomidae of Albania have so far received limited attention and only 39 species have been recorded prior to the present study. Here we bring the results of random and non-intensive samplings of chironomid pupal exuviae and adults, at five localities in 2012, that provided 55 species and 5 additional taxa, with 51 being new for the Albanian fauna, out of which 7 were new for the Balkan Peninsula. In addition to that, we present a preliminary checklist of Chironomidae based on the data from Fauna Europaea complemented by the results of the recent investigation.

Adsorption energies, , of gaseous hydroxides of In, Tl, and the superheavy element Nh on surfaces of Teflon and gold are predicted using molecular and periodic relativistic DFT calculations. The ambition of the work is to assist related "one atom at a time" gas-phase chromatography experiments on the volatility of NhOH. The obtained low values of (MOH), where M = In, Tl, Nh, on Teflon should guarantee easy transportation of the molecules through the Teflon capillaries from the accelerator to the chemistry setup.

Department of Radiology, Medical Imaging Center, University Medical Center Groningen, University of Groningen, Hanzeplein 1, 9713 GZ, Groningen, The Netherlands.

Light is an exceptional external stimulus for establishing precise control over the properties and functions of chemical and biological systems, which is enabled through the use of molecular photoswitches. Ideal photoswitches are operated with visible light only, show large separation of absorption bands and are functional in various solvents including water, posing an unmet challenge. Here we show a class of fully-visible-light-operated molecular photoswitches, Iminothioindoxyls (ITIs) that meet these requirements.

Parasitic trypanosomatids and phototrophic euglenids are among the most extensively studied euglenozoans. The phototrophic euglenid lineage arose relatively recently through secondary endosymbiosis between a phagotrophic euglenid and a prasinophyte green alga that evolved into the euglenid secondary chloroplast. The parasitic trypanosomatids (i.

Can Density Functional Theory Be Trusted for High-Order Electric Properties? The Case of Hydrogen-Bonded Complexes.

J Chem Theory Comput

June 2019

Institute of Computational Chemistry and Catalysis and Department of Chemistry , University of Girona, Campus de Montilivi , 17003 Girona , Catalonia , Spain.

This work reports on an extensive assessment of the performance of a wide palette of density functional approximations in predicting the (high-order) electric properties of hydrogen-bonded complexes. To this end, we compute the electronic and vibrational contributions to the electric polarizability and the first and second hyperpolarizabilities, using the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory as reference. For all the studied properties, the average absolute errors below 20% can only be obtained using the CAM-B3LYP functional, while LC-BLYP and MN15 are shown to be only slightly less accurate (average absolute errors not exceeding 30%).

Peculiar features of the plastids of the colourless alga Euglena longa and photosynthetic euglenophytes unveiled by transcriptome analyses.

Sci Rep

November 2018

Life Science Research Centre, Department of Biology and Ecology and Institute of Environmental Technologies, Faculty of Science, University of Ostrava, 701 00, Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Euglenophytes are a familiar algal group with green alga-derived secondary plastids, but the knowledge of euglenophyte plastid function and evolution is still highly incomplete. With this in mind we sequenced and analysed the transcriptome of the non-photosynthetic species Euglena longa. The transcriptomic data confirmed the absence of genes for the photosynthetic machinery, but provided candidate plastid-localised proteins bearing N-terminal bipartite topogenic signals (BTSs) of the characteristic euglenophyte type.
