Introduction: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, now known as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), is a phenotype of the metabolic syndrome in the liver and is clearly associated with metabolic abnormalities such as hyperglycaemia and dyslipidaemia. Although the prevalence of MASLD is increasing worldwide, there is currently no consensus on the efficacy and safety of the drugs used to treat MASLD/metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). Pemafibrate, a selective peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha modulator, was designed to have higher peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alfa (PPARα) agonist activity and selectivity than existing PPARα agonists, and in development trials, without increasing creatinine levels, lipid parameters and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) were significantly improved.

  • Shear wave elastography (SWE) is a noninvasive method used to measure organ stiffness, primarily focusing on liver stiffness to assess congestion in patients with heart failure (HF).
  • This study evaluated the use of SWE not just for the liver, but also for thyroid congestion in 21 patients with HF, highlighting a significant correlation between thyroid and liver stiffness measurements.
  • The results suggest that thyroid stiffness assessed by SWE is associated with clinical markers such as thyroid hormones and right atrial pressure, indicating that thyroid congestion may reflect overall cardiac congestion and potentially lead to thyroid dysfunction.

Article Synopsis
  • Research explored the link between apolipoprotein (apo) levels after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and long-term major adverse cardiac events (MACEs), revealing their potential prognostic value.
  • The study involved 241 patients over a mean follow-up period of about 5.7 years, where 78 experienced cardiovascular incidents, indicating a significant correlation between higher apo B levels and increased risk of MACEs.
  • Findings showed that apo B levels and the apo B/apo A1 ratio were more effective predictors of cardiac events than traditional lipid measurements like LDL-C levels, suggesting a shift in how we assess cardiovascular risk post-PCI.

We comprehensively assessed the roles of systemic redox markers by including both prooxidant and antioxidant markers in 121 Japanese subjects (mean ± SD age, 70 ± 11 years; 38 men) with no ocular pathology except age-related cataract. Serum levels of lipid peroxides, ferric-reducing activity, and thiol antioxidant activity were measured using the diacron reactive oxygen metabolite (dROM), biologic antioxidant potential (BAP), and sulfhydryl (SH) tests, respectively, using a free-radical analyzer. Univariate analyses suggested that older age, higher pulse rate, worse best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), higher intraocular pressure, and higher cataract grade were associated with a lower SH level.
