: Skull vibration-induced nystagmus (SVIN) has become a validated tool for evaluating the vestibular function. The presence of SVIN is a useful indicator of the asymmetry of vestibular function between the two ears. In unilateral vestibular loss, a 100 Hz bone-conducted vibration given to either mastoid immediately causes a primarily horizontal nystagmus.

Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Al Mouwasat University Hospital, Damascus University, Damascus, Syria.

GAPO syndrome is an exceptionally-rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by growth retardation, alopecia, pseudoanodontia, and optic abnormalities, with fewer than 60 cases reported globally. We present the first documented case in Syria, highlighting novel otolaryngological and radiological findings that expand the clinical spectrum of this syndrome. A 27-year-old male presented with chronic right-sided otalgia, unilateral conductive hearing loss, and persistent sinonasal symptoms.

A comprehensive understanding of the effects of bone conduction (BC) input force is essential for elucidating BC hearing mechanisms. However, this area remains underexplored due to the inherent difficulties in controlling input forces when BC transducers are anchored to the bone. In this study, the effects of both unilateral and bilateral BC input forces were investigated using a three-dimensional finite element (FE) model of the human head, which allows precise manipulation of input forces.

The living human inner ear is challenging to study because it is encased within dense otic capsule bone that limits access to biological tissue. Traditional temporal bone histopathology methods rely on lengthy, expensive decalcification protocols that take 9-10 months and reduce the types of tissue analysis possible due to RNA degradation. There is a critical need to develop methods to access fresh human inner ear tissue to better understand otologic diseases, such as Ménière's disease, at the cellular and molecular level.

Introduction: As far as it is known, long-lasting immunosuppressive therapy might put patients with solid organ transplantation (SOT) at increased risk for severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss, eventually leading to cochlear implantation (C.I). So, the main aim of the present study is to evaluate their auditory perception performance after cochlear implantation.

An Analysis of Hearing Outcomes in Children with Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome.

Br J Hosp Med (Lond)

November 2024

Department of Hearing Center, Children's Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Clinical Research Center for Child Health, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China.

Few hearing loss studies have been conducted in patients with progeria, and only the possibility of low-frequency conductive hearing loss has been mentioned. The primary objective of this study is to perform a comprehensive analysis of the clinical audiological characteristics of children with Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS), and the secondary objective is to analyse the causes of their hearing loss and what can be done to enable them to hear as well as possible. Ten children with HGPS underwent impedance audiometry (tympanogram), otoacoustic emissions, and pure-tone audiometry tests.

Long-term outcomes of surgical treatment for paediatric acute mastoiditis: the role of mastoidectomy.

Eur Arch Otorhinolaryngol

December 2024

Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, University Clinical Center Maribor, Ljubljanska 5, 2000, Maribor, Slovenia.

Purpose: Despite the declining incidence of acute mastoiditis (AM) due to antibiotics, complications persist, necessitating surgical intervention in severe cases. Recent studies suggest conservative treatments, avoiding mastoidectomy, show high recovery rates. However, this trend raises concerns about severe complications, prolonged treatment, increased antibiotic use, and declining surgical skills.
