Globally, bread is a staple food and thus a promising vehicle for the delivery of nutrients from vegetables including carotenoids. The aim of this pilot/feasibility, pre-post experimental study was to measure skin (Veggie Meter™) and plasma carotenoid concentrations 1 week before (week -1), immediately prior to (week 0), and after (week 2) 14 days of daily consumption of 200 g pumpkin- and sweetcorn-enriched bread (VB). At each measurement point, total vegetable and fruit intake and specific carotenoid-rich foods were assessed by questionnaire.

The closure of borders to regular flights for over a year in places such as Fiji, Samoa, Cook Islands and Vanuatu, where this research was undertaken, has resulted in massive job losses. Many tourism employees have left the once-bustling tourist hubs, returning to villages and family settlements.

The effect of orally administered hawthorn flavonoid extract (HFE) on growth, electrocardiographic waves, and cardiac parameters of pulmonary hypertensive chickens reared at high altitude (2,100 m above sea level) was examined. A total of 225 one-day-old, mixed broiler chicks (3 treatments with 5 replicates and 15 chicks per each, totally 75 birds/treatment) were assigned to 3 experimental groups: 0, 0.1, and 0.

Aims: Guidelines for cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programmes inform best practice. In Aotearoa NewZealand, little information exists about the structure and services provided by CR programmes and there is a poor understanding of how existing CR programmes are delivered with respect to evidence-based national guidelines.
Methods: All 46 CR providers in New Zealand were invited to participate in a national survey in 2015.

In order to limit the number and impact of exotic pest invasions, leading-edge technologies must be embraced and embedded within integrated national and international biosecurity systems. Outlined here are recent advances in the detection of exotic pests, and prospects for the early recognition of disease. Applications of new tools are described, using our understanding of the genomes of pathogens and vectors.

The stereochemical outcome of the intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction of ester-linked 1,3,8-nonatrienes can be controlled by substituents about a stereogenic center attached to C1. The scope and limitations of this approach have been investigated, with variation in substrate structure about the allylic stereocenter and the dienophile. The stereochemical outcomes of these reactions are explained by reference to B3 LYP/6-31G(d) transition structures.
