Latinx populations face a higher burden of kidney failure and associated negative outcomes compared with non-Latinx White populations, despite sharing a similar prevalence of CKD. Community health worker (CHW) interventions have been shown to improve outcomes for Latinx individuals, but they are largely underutilized in kidney disease. We convened a workshop of four ongoing kidney disease CHW programs to identify successes, challenges, potential solutions, and needed research to promote CHW programs for Latinx individuals with kidney disease.

The advent of portable, low-field MRI (LF-MRI) heralds new opportunities in neuroimaging. Low power requirements and transportability have enabled scanning outside the controlled environment of a conventional MRI suite, enhancing access to neuroimaging for indications that are not well suited to existing technologies. Maximizing the information extracted from the reduced signal-to-noise ratio of LF-MRI is crucial to developing clinically useful diagnostic images.

Regional anatomical structures of the brain are intimately connected to functions corresponding to specific regions and the temporospatial pattern of genetic expression and their functions from the fetal period to old age. Therefore, quantitative brain morphometry has often been employed in neuroscience investigations, while controlling for the scanner effect of the scanner is a critical issue for ensuring accuracy in brain morphometric studies of rare orphan diseases due to the lack of normal reference values available for multicenter studies. Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder caused by a deficiency in functional C1 esterase inhibitor, a serpin family protein that blocks the activity of plasma kallikrein. Insufficient inhibition of plasma kallikrein results in the overproduction of bradykinin, a vasoactive inflammatory mediator that produces both pain and unpredictable swelling during HAE attacks, with potentially life-threatening consequences. We describe the generation of STAR-0215, a humanized IgG1 antibody with a long circulating half-life (t) that potently inhibits plasma kallikrein activity, with a >1000-fold lower affinity for prekallikrein and no measurable inhibitory activity against other serine proteases.

Introduction: Omics studies have revealed that various brain cell types undergo profound molecular changes in Alzheimer's disease (AD) but the spatial relationships with plaques and tangles and APOE-linked differences remain unclear.
Methods: We performed laser capture microdissection of amyloid beta (Aβ) plaques, the 50 μm halo around them, tangles with the 50 μm halo around them, and areas distant (> 50 μm) from plaques and tangles in the temporal cortex of AD and control donors, followed by RNA-sequencing.
Results: Aβ plaques exhibited upregulated microglial (neuroinflammation/phagocytosis) and downregulated neuronal (neurotransmission/energy metabolism) genes, whereas tangles had mostly downregulated neuronal genes.

Progress in understanding brain-viscera interoceptive signaling is hindered by a dearth of implantable devices suitable for probing both brain and peripheral organ neurophysiology during behavior. Here we describe multifunctional neural interfaces that combine the scalability and mechanical versatility of thermally drawn polymer-based fibers with the sophistication of microelectronic chips for organs as diverse as the brain and the gut. Our approach uses meters-long continuous fibers that can integrate light sources, electrodes, thermal sensors and microfluidic channels in a miniature footprint.
