Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Hospital Breastfeeding Care in the US.

Objectives: This study examines the associations between race and ethnicity and receipt of Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) key clinical practices that support breastfeeding in US hospitals.

Methods: National data from 2016 to 2019 CDC PRAMS were analyzed. Our sample included 60,395 mothers who initiated breastfeeding with healthy, term newborns.

Generative AI as a tool to accelerate the field of ecology.

The emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI) models specializing in the generation of new data with the statistical patterns and properties of the data upon which the models were trained has profoundly influenced a range of academic disciplines, industry and public discourse. Combined with the vast amounts of diverse data now available to ecologists, from genetic sequences to remotely sensed animal tracks, generative AI presents enormous potential applications within ecology. Here we draw upon a range of fields to discuss unique potential applications in which generative AI could accelerate the field of ecology, including augmenting data-scarce datasets, extending observations of ecological patterns and increasing the accessibility of ecological data.

APOE4 and sedentary lifestyle synergistically impair neurovascular function in the visual cortex of awake mice.

Reduced cerebral blood flow occurs early in the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the factors producing this reduction are unknown. Here, we ask whether genetic and lifestyle risk factors for AD-the ε4 allele of the Apolipoprotein (APOE) gene, and physical activity-can together produce this reduction in cerebral blood flow which leads eventually to AD. Using in vivo two-photon microscopy and haemodynamic measures, we record neurovascular function from the visual cortex of physically active or sedentary mice expressing APOE3 and APOE4 in place of murine APOE.

Three-dimensional diffractive acoustic tomography.

Acoustically probing biological tissues with light or sound, photoacoustic and ultrasound imaging can provide anatomical, functional, and/or molecular information at depths far beyond the optical diffusion limit. However, most photoacoustic and ultrasound imaging systems rely on linear-array transducers with elevational focusing and are limited to two-dimensional imaging with anisotropic resolutions. Here, we present three-dimensional diffractive acoustic tomography (3D-DAT), which uses an off-the-shelf linear-array transducer with single-slit acoustic diffraction.

Predicting falls with ultrasound, physical parameters or fall-risk questions among older adults: A prospective cohort study.

Background: Falls are a significant issue among older adults, leading to morbidity and mortality. Screening for fall risk in the ED is crucial but challenging due to time limitations and patient conditions. Sarcopenia, characterized by muscle loss, is associated with increased fall risk, and ultrasound has been proposed as a non-invasive tool to measure muscle mass in this context.

Vasoplegia in Heart, Lung, or Liver Transplantation: A Narrative Review.

Vasoplegia is a pathophysiologic state of hypotension in the setting of normal or high cardiac output and low systemic vascular resistance despite euvolemia and high-dose vasoconstrictors. Vasoplegia in heart, lung, or liver transplantation is of particular interest because it is common (approximately 29%, 28%, and 11%, respectively), is associated with adverse outcomes, and because the agents used to treat vasoplegia can affect immunosuppressive and other drug metabolism. This narrative review discusses the pathophysiology, risk factors, and treatment of vasoplegia in patients undergoing heart, lung, and liver transplantation.

Currently Available Radiology-Specific Reporting Guidelines.

The aim of this paper is to contextualize and review reporting guidelines available at the EQUATOR Network that are most relevant to radiology-specific investigations. Eight EQUATOR Network reporting guidelines for the clinical area of radiology, not including the subspecialized areas of imaging of the cardiovascular, neurologic, and oncologic diseases are reviewed and discussed. The reporting guidelines are for diagnostic and therapeutic clinical research.

Antithrombotic resumption after middle meningeal artery embolization or surgery for chronic subdural hematoma: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: The periprocedural management of antithrombotic medications in patients with chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) after middle meningeal artery embolization (MMAE) or surgical evacuation is uncertain.

Methods: A systematic review was conducted across Medline, Embase, and Web of Science databases. We pooled proportions and risk ratios (RRs) for the meta-analysis with the corresponding 95% CIs.

Long-term follow up from the Harvard Alumni Health Study: collegiate sport participation in males is associated with higher physical activity throughout midlife.

Objective: To compare physical activity (PA) over midlife between (1) former collegiate athletes and non-athletes and (2) among athletes in different sports.

Methods: The Harvard Alumni Health Study (HAHS) is a prospective cohort study of male undergraduates who completed serial questionnaires regarding PA and health status between 1962 and 1993. PA was categorised by intensity (<3 METs, light; 3 to <6 METs, moderate; ≥6 METs, vigorous), and energy expenditure (kilocalories (kcal)/week) was estimated at each intensity and in total.

Timing and Outcomes of PCI in Conjunction With TAVR With Balloon-Expandable Valves.

Background: The optimal timing for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is debatable.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare outcomes based on the timing of PCI in stable coronary artery disease patients undergoing TAVR.

Methods: Leveraging the STS/ACC TVT Registry and Medicare Linkage, we analyzed patients with stable coronary artery disease undergoing PCI and TAVR between 2015 and 2023 using the SAPIEN 3 balloon-expandable valve platform.

Development and validation of a novel risk-predicted model for early sepsis-associated acute kidney injury in critically ill patients: a retrospective cohort study.

Objectives: This study aimed to develop a prediction model for the detection of early sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (SA-AKI), which is defined as AKI diagnosed within 48 hours of a sepsis diagnosis.

Design: A retrospective study design was employed. It is not linked to a clinical trial.

Analytical approaches to evaluate risk factors of multimorbidity: a systematic scoping review protocol.

Introduction: Understanding causal risk factors that contribute to the development of multimorbidity is essential for designing and targeting effective preventive strategies. Despite a large body of research in this field, there has been little critical discussion about the appropriateness of the various analytical approaches used. This proposed scoping review aims to summarise and appraise the analytical approaches used in the published literature that evaluated risk factors of multimorbidity and to provide guidance for researchers conducting analyses in this field.

Understanding the impact of racism on surgical outcomes in settler nation-states USA and Canada: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Introduction: To improve surgical quality and safety, health systems must prioritise equitable care for surgical patients. Racialised patients experience worse postoperative outcomes when compared with non-racialised surgical patients in settler colonial nation-states. Identifying preventable adverse outcomes for equity-deserving patient populations is an important starting point to begin to address these gaps in care.

Anaphylaxis definition, overview, and clinical support tool: 2024 consensus report.

Background: The 2006 National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease/Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network (NIAID/FAAN) anaphylaxis criteria are widely used in clinical care and research. In 2020, the World Allergy Organization (WAO) published modified criteria that have not been uniformly adopted. Different criteria contribute to inconsistent care and research outcomes.

Evaluating the Management of Intermittent Claudication before and after Publication of the Society of Vascular Surgery's Appropriate Use Criteria.

Objectives: In April 2022, the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) published the Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC) for the management of intermittent claudication (IC). Our goal was to compare practice patterns before and after publication of the AUC to identify changes.

Methods: The Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI) peripheral vascular intervention (PVI), and suprainguinal, and infrainguinal bypass registries were analyzed for interventions for IC.

The impact of buprenorphine prescriber data on geospatial access to treatment in HEALing Communities Study communities, 2022.

Introduction: The location of buprenorphine treatment providers in the United States is pivotal to the understanding of regional factors associated with prescription and uptake. We evaluated how distinct data sources of treatment providers and their associated locations contribute to the differences observed when measuring buprenorphine accessibility.

Methods: We compared buprenorphine treatment provider data from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and data from the behavioral health treatment locator from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for July 2022.

Variability in Coagulation Profiles in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease and Peripheral Artery Disease.

Objectives: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) has been associated with a prothrombotic state. CKD affects hemostasis through altered platelet function and coagulation factors. Traditional tests provide limited insight into these changes.

Intergenerational transfer of micro(nano)plastics in different organisms.

Micro(nano)plastics (MNPs), widely distributed in the environment, can be ingested and accumulated by various organisms. Recently, the transgenerational transport of MNPs from parental organisms to their offspring has attracted increasing attention. In this review, we summarize the patterns, specific pathways, and related mechanisms of intergenerational transfer of MNPs in plants, non-mammals (zooplankton and fish) and mammals.

Medical management pathways for Cushing's disease in pituitary tumors centers of excellence (PTCOEs).

Purpose: A recent update of consensus guidelines for the management of Cushing's disease (CD) included indications for medical therapy. However, there is limited evidence regarding their implementation in clinical practice. This study aimed to evaluate current medical therapy approaches by expert pituitary centers through an audit conducted to validate the criteria of Pituitary Tumors Centers of Excellence (PTCOEs) and provide an initial standard of medical care for CD.

Examining the physical and psychological effects of combining multimodal feedback with continuous control in prosthetic hands.

Myoelectric prosthetic hands are typically controlled to move between discrete positions and do not provide sensory feedback to the user. In this work, we present and evaluate a closed-loop, continuous myoelectric prosthetic hand controller, that can continuously control the position of multiple degrees of freedom of a prosthesis while rendering proprioceptive feedback to the user via a haptic feedback armband. Twenty-eight participants without and ten participants with upper limb difference (ULD) were recruited to holistically evaluate the physical and psychological effects of the controller via isolated control and sensory tasks, dexterity assessments, embodiment and task load questionnaires, and post-study interviews.

Pharmacotherapy for Tourette Syndrome.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is associated with dysregulated cortico-striatal-thalamo-cortical neural circuitry, of which the primary implicated neurotransmitters include dopamine, glutamate, and gamma-aminobutyric acid. Pharmacologic intervention for tics should be considered when tics are causing psychological, functional, or physical impairment, and behavioral treatment is either inaccessible or ineffective. Only 3 medications have Food and Drug Administration approval for TS, including 2 typical antipsychotics (pimozide and haloperidol) and 1 atypical antipsychotic (aripiprazole).
