Background: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in children is a significant public health concern, increasing the risk of infant mortality. Immunodeficiency caused by HIV favors the development of opportunistic infections (OIs), which are responsible for over 90% of HIV-related deaths. This study seeks to determine the primary OIs in children with HIV followed at the Hassan II Regional Hospital Center in Sous Massa, during the period from 2012 to 2023.

Importance: In 2022, the US House of Representatives passed a bipartisan resolution (House of Representatives Resolution 1118 at the 117th Congress [2021-2022]) calling for meaningful nutrition education for medical trainees. This was prompted by increasing health care spending attributed to the growing prevalence of nutrition-related diseases and the substantial federal funding via Medicare that supports graduate medical education. In March 2023, medical education professional organizations agreed to identify nutrition competencies for medical education.

This review focuses on the immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in the context of breast cancer (BC) management. These innovative treatments, by targeting proteins expressed on both tumor and immune cells, aim to overcome tumor-induced immune suppression and reactivate the immune system. The potential of this approach is the subject of numerous clinical studies.

This study compares the power of the radiofrequency (RF) signal reflected from the media layer (media power) of the common carotid artery (CCA) and the CCA stiffness between individuals with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). It also evaluates the associations of CCA media power with plasma glucose and lipid levels, as well as carotid stiffness. A total of 540 individuals, 115 with and 425 without T2DM (273 males, mean age = 64 ± 8 years) were studied using RF-based tracking of the right CCA.

Following preliminary underwater observations of about 1000 h carried out monthly between 2012 and 2023 (except the years 2021 and 2022), 23 specimens of grey reef sharks were spotted and photo-identified off the coast of Nosy Be in Madagascar, on an emerging reef called "Mokarran" at a depth between 15 and 30 m. Over 10 years of observations, eight specimens were re-sighted, identified with a non-invasive photo-identification technique of part of the first dorsal and the caudal fin, and one specimen was re-identified after 1982 days from the first sighting, i.e.

Photon counting computed tomography (PCCT) represents a paradigm shift from conventional CT imaging, propelled by a new generation of X-ray detectors capable of counting individual photons and measuring their energy. The first part of this narrative review is focused on the technical aspects of PCCT and describes its key advancements and benefits compared to conventional CT but also its limitations. By synthesizing the existing literature, the second part of the review seeks to elucidate the potential of PCCT as a valuable tool for assessing carotid artery disease.

Background/objectives: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and impaired motor performance. This study aimed to investigate the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) during virtual reality (VR) tasks on the motor performance of women with FM.
Methods: Participants were divided into two groups: Group A received active tDCS for 10 days followed by sham tDCS for 10 days, while Group B received the opposite sequence.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune demyelinating disease of the central nervous system with unknown etiology, resulting in various impairments that necessitate continuous rehabilitation to enhance functionality, quality of life, and motor function, including through Virtual Reality (VR) therapy. Comparing tasks in virtual environments and their potential skill transfer to real-world settings could aid in optimizing treatment programs to improve motor performance in individuals with MS. This study aimed to determine whether practicing acquisition and retention phases using two distinct interfaces (concrete-Touch Screen or abstract-Kinect system) affects performance in a subsequent task using a different interface (transfer phase).

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most lethal cancers with patients having unresectable or metastatic disease at diagnosis, with poor prognosis and very short survival. Given that genetic variation within autophagy-related genes influences autophagic flux and susceptibility to solid cancers, we decided to investigate whether 55,583 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within 234 autophagy-related genes could influence the risk of developing PDAC in three large independent cohorts of European ancestry including 12,754 PDAC cases and 324,926 controls. The meta-analysis of these populations identified, for the first time, the association of the BID variant with an increased risk of developing the disease (OR = 1.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease characterised by joint destruction and extra-articular manifestations. Different cells and soluble components of the innate as well as adaptive immune system actively contribute to the amplification and perpetuation of the inflammatory processes and structural changes. To date, the knowledge on the mechanisms involved in RA pathogenesis is increasingly precise, mainly due to the recent data obtained from studies on genetics and molecular and cellular biology.

Background: Cognitive reserve (CR) is an expression of brain resilience in response to damage. Education, occupational experience and leisure activities are thought to increase CR and have beneficial effects on global cognition and cognitive decline in Parkinson's disease (PD). We aimed to disclose brain metabolic and dopaminergic correlates of CR in de-novo PD patients.

Neurological manifestations of tuberculosis remain rare, even if recent years have been marked by an increase in these pathologies, notably due to the HIV pandemic. Intramedullary tuberculoma remains an exceptional localization. Magnetic resonance imaging in diagnosing intramedullary tuberculoma and specific medical treatment are of great interest.

This study examined the metrics of the macroparasite community in fishes from the Jaguaribe River basin, state of Ceará, before and after receiving water from the São Francisco River in Northeastern Brazil. This research assessed the association of environmental factors (water parameters) and the traits of 30 fish species on the parasite richness and abundance across space (river course) and time (seasons, pre- and post-transposition periods). Generalized linear models reveal associations between parasite metrics and host traits, water parameters, and river sub-basin.

Background: Juvenile sudden cardiac death (SCD) remains unexplained in approximately 40% of cases, leading to a significant emotional burden for the victims' families and society. Comprehensive investigations are essential to uncover its elusive causes and enable cascade family screening. This study aimed to enhance the identification of likely causative variants in juvenile SCD cases (age ≤ 50 years), particularly when autopsy findings are inconclusive.

Aortoiliac occlusive disease (AIOD) is a specific form of peripheral artery disease (PAD) that affects the infrarenal aorta and iliac arteries. Patients with PAD commonly suffer from intermittent claudication (IC), a condition characterized by cramping pain during or after exercise that is relieved by rest. The first-line therapy for IC involves medical management, foot care, and structured exercise programs while revascularization therapy, which can be endovascular, surgical, or a combination of both, is generally reserved for patients with claudication who do not respond adequately to initial therapies.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disorder which primarily involves memory and cognitive functions. It is increasingly recognized that motor involvement is also a common and significant aspect of AD, contributing to functional decline and profoundly impacting quality of life. Motor impairment, either at early or later stages of cognitive disorders, can be considered as a proxy measure of cognitive impairment, and technological devices can provide objective measures for both diagnosis and prognosis purposes.
