A Sequential Mixed-Methods Study of Factors Associated with Low High-Resolution Anoscopy Completion in Transgender Women with Abnormal Anal Cytology.

In a cohort of transgender women (TGW) with abnormal anal cytology (AAC) in Washington, DC, we determined the rates of and factors associated with completion of high-resolution anoscopy (HRA). This mixed-methods study used a sequential study design. In an academic-community clinic, we recruited TGW who provided blood samples, anal swabs for anal cytology, and completed surveys.

Sorting Out the SOCS Genes and Their Role in Macrophage Activation.

Responsible Use of Population Neuroscience Data in the ABCD: Towards Standards of Accountability and Integrity.

This editorial focuses on the issue of data misuse that is increasingly evidenced in social media as well as some premiere scientific journals. This issue is of critical importance to open science projects in general, and ABCD in particular, given the broad array of biological, behavioural and environmental information collected on this American sample of 12,000 youth and parents. ABCD data are already widely used with over 1,200 publications and twice as many citations per year as expected (relative citation index based on year, field and journal).

Dizziness is a common clinical presentation that incurs huge financial costs. It is frequently misdiagnosed due to a wide differential involving both benign (inner ear disease) and serious (stroke) disorders. An international survey of patient blood management practices.

Background: The Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies (AABB) conducted a global survey of patient blood management (PBM) practices. It determined changes in PBM practices since the last survey.

Study Design And Methods: A working group of AABB's PBM Subsection and AABB staff designed the survey using the Qualtrics™ platform.

Incidence of Occupational Injuries Among Military Working Dog Handlers, 2016-2023.

Objective: This study examines the incidence of injuries among active component service members in Military Working Dog (MWD) handler occupations compared to three other active component occupational groups.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted with a total of 2,524,092 active component service members including, 3935 MWD handlers, 2025 veterinary personnel, 113,413 military police, and 2,404,719 all other active component service members (ACSM). Incidence rate and incident rate ratios of injuries were determined.

NumSimEX: A method using EXX hydrogen exchange mass spectrometry to map the energetics of protein folding landscapes.

Hydrogen exchange mass spectrometry (HXMS) is a powerful tool to understand protein folding pathways and energetics. However, HXMS experiments to date have used exchange conditions termed EX1 or EX2 which limit the information that can be gained compared to the more general EXX exchange regime. If EXX behavior could be understood and analyzed, a single HXMS timecourse on an intact protein could fully map its folding landscape without requiring denaturation.

Super-resolution imaging of proteins inside live mammalian cells with mLIVE-PAINT.

Super-resolution microscopy has revolutionized biological imaging, enabling the visualization of structures at the nanometer length scale. Its application in live cells, however, has remained challenging. To address this, we adapted LIVE-PAINT, an approach we established in yeast, for application in live mammalian cells.

Remaining useful life prediction of lithium-ion batteries using a novel particle flow filter framework with grey model.

Remaining useful life (RUL) prediction is a crucial aspect of the prognostics health management of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Owing to the influence of resampling technology, particle degradation is often observed in the particle filter-based RUL prediction of LIBs, resulting in a low prediction accuracy and large uncertainty. In this paper, a novel particle flow filter with the grey model method (GM-PFF) is proposed to forecast the RUL and state of health of batteries.

Crucial role of subsurface ocean variability in tropical cyclone genesis.

The upper ocean provides thermal energy to tropical cyclones. However, the impacts of the subsurface ocean on tropical cyclogenesis have been largely overlooked. Here, we show that the subsurface variabilities associated with the variation in the 26 °C isothermal depth have pronounced impacts on tropical cyclogenesis over global oceans.

CD19 CAR-T With Axicabtagene Ciloleucel in R/R Large B-Cell Lymphoma With/Without Prior Autologous Stem Cell Transplant.

Background: Anti-CD19 CAR-T therapy has been a breakthrough in treatment of primary refractory or relapsed large B-cell lymphoma (r/r LBCL) and is poised to supplant previous second line of high dose chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplantation (HDT/ASCT). However, in clinical practice, high risk patients with chemoimmunotherapy sensitive disease continue to receive salvage chemoimmunotherapy or cannot access CAR-T in a timely manner and thus may still proceed to HDT/ASCT. Little is known about clinical outcomes of CAR-T in patients who receive HDT/ASCT compared to those who are transplant-naïve.

Sleep variability and time to achieving pregnancy: findings from a pilot cohort study of women desiring pregnancy.

Objective: To determine whether chronodisruption is associated with achieving pregnancy.

Design: Pilot prospective cohort study.

Subjects: One hundred eighty-three women desiring pregnancy were recruited from the local community of an academic medical center located in the Midwest and provided sleep information between February 1, 2015, and November 30, 2017.

Oxidative Gaseous Air Pollutant Exposure Interacts with PNPLA3-I148M Genotype to Influence Liver Fat Fraction and Multi-Omics Profiles in Young Adults.

PNPLA3-I148M genotype is the strongest predictive single-nucleotide polymorphism for liver fat. We examine whether PNPLA3-I148M modifies associations between oxidative gaseous air pollutant exposure (O) with i) liver fat and ii) multi-omics profiles of miRNAs and metabolites linked to liver fat. Participants were 69 young adults (17-22 years) from the Meta-AIR cohort.

Consensus recommendations for measuring the impact of contraception on the menstrual cycle in contraceptive clinical trials.

Objective: We sought to develop consensus recommendations for measurement and analysis of data on contraceptive-induced menstrual changes (CIMCs) in contraceptive clinical trials. We built upon previous standardization efforts over the last 50 years and prioritized input from a variety of global experts and current regulatory authority guidance on patient-reported outcomes.

Study Design: We completed a formal consensus-building process with an interdisciplinary group of 57 experts from 30 organizations and 14 countries in five global regions who work across academia, nonprofit research organizations, the pharmaceutical industry, and funding agencies.

Extremophilic hemoglobins: The structure of Shewanella benthica truncated hemoglobin N.

Truncated hemoglobins (TrHbs) have an ancient origin and are widely distributed in microorganisms where they often serve roles other than dioxygen transport and storage. In extremophiles, these small heme proteins must have features that secure function under challenging conditions: at minimum, they must be folded, retain the heme group, allow substrates to access the heme cavity, and maintain their quaternary structure if present and essential. The genome of the obligate psychropiezophile Shewanella benthica strain KT99 harbors a gene for a TrHb belonging to a little-studied clade of globins (subgroup 2 of group N).

Protocol for a systematic review and individual participant data meta-analysis for risk factors for lung cancer in individuals with lung nodules identified by low-dose CT screening.

Background: Worldwide, lung cancer (LC) is the second most frequent cancer and the leading cause of cancer related mortality. Low-dose CT (LDCT) screening reduced LC mortality by 20-24% in randomised trials of high-risk populations. A significant proportion of those screened have nodules detected that are found to be benign.

Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair for Penetrating Aortic Trauma.

Background: Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR) reduced mortality for blunt aortic injury (BAI) from 30-50% to < 10%; however, penetrating traumatic aortic injury (PAI) remains highly lethal (>40% mortality). This study's goal is to determine outcomes of TEVAR for PAI.

Methods: Patients undergoing TEVAR for traumatic aortic injuries were identified from the Vascular Quality Initiative database from 2011-2022.

Postoperative guidelines following pediatric cataract and glaucoma surgeries: a survey of preferred surgeon instructions.

Background Recommendations regarding long-term postoperative activity are intended to prevent adverse events, but no common policy or best practice exists among ophthalmologists for pediatric patients. We surveyed ophthalmologists on their postoperative guidelines after the one-month postoperative period following childhood cataract and glaucoma surgeries. Methods A 28-question anonymous Qualtrics survey was distributed via listservs and social media.
