Introduction: Alzheimer's disease (AD) prevalence and severity are associated with increased age, female sex, and apolipoprotein E4 (APOE4) genotype. Although estrogen therapy (ET) effectively reduces symptoms of menopause including hot flashes and anxiety, and can reduce dementia risk, it is associated with increased risks of breast and uterine cancer due to estrogen receptor alpha (ERα)-mediated increases in cancer cell proliferation. Because ERβ activation reduces this cell proliferation, selective targeting of ERβ may provide a safer method of improving memory and reducing hot flashes in menopausal women, including those with AD.

Lianas (woody climbers) are crucial components of tropical forests and they have been increasingly recognized to have profound effects on tropical forest carbon dynamics. Despite their importance, lianas' representation in vegetation models remains limited, partly due to the complexity of liana-tree dynamics and the diversity in liana life history strategies. This paper provides a comprehensive review of advances and challenges for mechanistically representing lianas in forest ecosystem models and a proposed path towards effectively representing lianas in these models.

Addressing a critical challenge in current tissue-engineering practices, this study aims to enhance vascularization in 3D porous scaffolds by incorporating bioceramics laden with pro-angiogenic ions. Specifically, freeze-dried gelatin-based scaffolds were infused with sol-gel-derived powders of Cu-doped akermanite (CaMgSi2O) and bredigite (CaMgSiO) at various concentrations (10, 20, and 30 wt%). The scaffolds were initially characterized for their structural integrity, biodegradability, swelling behavior, impact on physiological pH, and cytocompatibility with human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).

The Aging Enterprise was first coined by Carol Estes to critique the hegemony of a gerontological discourse and policy in the United States in the 1970s. These policy interventions seemed to be serving the needs of policy-makers and aging professionals, rather than those of older adults. More recently she wrote on how these interventions limited the possibilities of the gerontological imagination and focused attention on "old age" as a social problem.

: Hemimandibular hyperplasia (HH) associated with osteochondroma presents complex challenges in maxillofacial surgery, including facial asymmetry, occlusal instability, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction. Surgical interventions vary widely in approach and outcomes, underscoring the need for a systematic evaluation of effectiveness. This systematic review assesses the effectiveness of surgical approaches for managing HH associated with osteochondroma, focusing on techniques including condylectomy, orthognathic surgery, distraction osteogenesis, total joint replacement (TJR), and genioplasty.

Previous research has used primarily linear regression models to predict jump height and establish contributors of performance. The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of artificial neural network (ANN) and multi-linear regression (MLR) in prediction of countermovement jump (CMJ) height and investigating the contribution of kinematic variables to CMJ performance. Thirty-four healthy young male athletes performed a total of 204 CMJ while eight kinematic variables (the hip, knee, and ankle angles at the begging of the concentric phase of CMJ, the hip and knee take-off angles, and the shoulder, hip, and knee maximum angular velocities) were used as inputs to ANN and MLR to predict CMJ height.

Biotin-dependent carboxylases catalyze the MgATP- and bicarbonate-dependent carboxylation of various acceptor substrates through a two-step carboxylation reaction. Biotin-dependent carboxylases play an essential role in the metabolism of key biomolecules and, therefore, they are the subject of ongoing drug discovery efforts, as well as of studies seeking to better characterize their structure and function. It has been an ongoing challenge to obtain high yields of mammalian biotin-dependent carboxylases for in vitro experimentation; these enzymes have not been successfully purified when recombinantly expressed from a bacterial expression host and only low yields of these recombinant, vertebrate enzymes have been obtained through expression in cell culture systems.

Models of shift work and health suggest that individual differences in circadian rhythm characteristics may moderate the relationship between night shift work and injury, but this argument has not been directly tested. In this study, we tested the efficacy of two circadian rhythm characteristics-vigour and flexibility-as moderators of the path between shift work and injury. In addition, we aimed to replicate the association between vigour, flexibility, and alertness by time of day, and the measurement properties of the Circadian Type Inventory.

Endotracheal tube (ETT) intubation is a medical procedure routinely used for achieving mechanical ventilation in critically ill patients. Appropriate ETT placement is crucial as undetected tube migration may cause multiple complications or even fatalities. Therefore, prompt detection of unplanned movement of the ETT and immediate action to restore proper placement are essential to ensure patient safety.

Obesity increases the risk of respiratory diseases that reduce respiratory chemosensitivity, such as Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome and sleep apnea. Recent evidence suggests that obesity-related changes in the brain, including alterations in melanocortin signaling via the melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R), may underly altered chemosensitivity. Setmelanotide, an MC4R agonist, causes weight loss in both humans and animal models.

In studies using representational similarity analysis (RSA) of fMRI data, the reliability of the neural representational dissimilarity matrix (RDM) is a limiting factor in the ability to detect neural correlates of a model. A common strategy for boosting neural RDM reliability is to employ repeated presentations of the stimulus set across imaging runs or sessions. However, little is known about how the benefits of stimulus repetition are affected by repetition suppression, or how they compare with the benefits of increasing the number of participants.

This work presents an adaptive sensor signal-processing approach to enable quantification, using a single gas sensor or a small sensor array, of multianalyte mixtures of aromatic hydrocarbons in the presence of various interferents and humidity for environmental-monitoring applications. Dynamic sensor responses are analyzed by extracting multivariable sensing parameters to provide necessary sensitivity and selectivity. This is achieved by integrating the Levenberg-Marquardt-modified, exponentially weighted, recursive-least-squares-estimation (LM-modified EW-RLSE) algorithm and principal-component analysis (PCA).
