We aim to evaluate stone-free rate (SFR) and complications after flexible ureteroscopy (F-URS) for kidney stones, using a flexible and navigable suction ureteral access sheath (FANS), comparing thulium fiber laser (TFL) and high-power holmium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser (HPHL). Data from adults who underwent F-URS in 15 centers were prospectively analyzed (August 2023-January 2024). Exclusion criteria were ureteral stones, concomitant bilateral procedures, and renal abnormalities.

An evaluation of pozelimab for the treatment of CHAPLE disease.

Expert Opin Biol Ther

January 2025

Division of Allergy and Immunology, Department of Pediatrics, School of Medicine, Marmara University, Istanbul, Turkey.

Introduction: CHAPLE disease is a severe, ultra-rare disorder caused by CD55 gene mutations, leading to uncontrolled complement hyperactivation, protein-losing enteropathy, and systemic thrombosis. Recent advances in targeted therapies, particularly the C5 inhibitor pozelimab (Veopoz), offer new treatment options by addressing complement dysregulation, marking a shift from symptomatic to precision therapy.

Areas Covered: This review explores the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and current treatments for CHAPLE disease.

Dry Needling Plus Cervical Interlaminar Epidural Steroid Injections: Do We Have More Favorable Results in Cervical Disc Herniation? A Randomized Sham-Controlled Clinical Study.

Am J Phys Med Rehabil

December 2024

From the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Faculty of Medicine, Marmara University, Istanbul, Turkey (GY, CST); and Division of Pain Medicine, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Faculty of Medicine, Marmara University, Istanbul, Turkey (SS, OHG).

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how dry needling impacts pain relief in patients undergoing interlaminar epidural steroid injections for cervical disc herniation with active trigger points.
  • Three groups were formed: one received both steroid injections and dry needling, another received steroid injections and a sham treatment, and the third received only injections.
  • Results showed that the combination of steroid injections and dry needling significantly lowered pain levels more than the other treatments and increased pain thresholds, highlighting its effectiveness.

Introduction: Abdominoplasty aims to reduce the abdominal excess tissue and tighten the abdominal wall. The tightening of the abdominal wall has structural and habitual consequences on the body, which might have an early effect on electrocardiography (ECG) of the patients through volumetric and pressure changes in thoracic and abdominal cavities. ECG serves as a diagnostic tool for assessing cardiac electrical conductions in routine clinical practice.

Green and Red LEDs increase insulin production, but their comparative effects on pancreatic and beta cell development are unclear. Zebrafish embryos were divided into three groups: Control (n = 60), Green (G) (n = 60), and Red (R) (n = 60), then irradiated for three days (14 hours/day) with 0.5 W/cm G (λpeak = 520 nm, 180 mA) and R (λpeak = 660 nm, 210 mA).

Purpose: To describe the advanced multimodal imaging findings of patients with bilateral diffuse uveal melanocytic proliferation (BDUMP) and the changes in these findings over time.

Methods: Fundus photography, fundus autofluorescence (FAF), fundus fluorescein angiography (FA), spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT), B-scan ultrasonography (US), and ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) images of the patients diagnosed with BDUMP at a single institution between years 2006-2023 were evaluated.

Results: Sixteen eyes of 8 patients with BDUMP were included.

Article Synopsis
  • The CMS experiment conducted a search for charge-parity violation in decays using proton-proton collision data from 2018, analyzing around 10 billion events with b hadrons decaying into charm hadrons.
  • The flavor of the neutral D meson was determined through the charge of pions in the reconstructed decays, and an asymmetry measurement in the decays was reported, taking into account various uncertainties.
  • This research marks the first asymmetry measurement by the CMS in the charm sector and the first to use a fully hadronic final state in such analyses.

Background: The SIPPET randomized clinical trial showed that in previously untreated patients (PUPs) with severe hemophilia A, treatment with plasma-derived factor (F)VIII (pdFVIII) within the first 50 exposure days (EDs) was associated with a lower cumulative incidence of inhibitors than with recombinant FVIII (rFVIII). Switching to rFVIII beyond 50 EDs with pdFVIII is a treatment often implemented by many centers. The question is whether or not this switch may induce a risk of inhibitor development.

Objective: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) has become the most commonly performed bariatric procedure due to its technical simplicity and effectiveness. While stapler line reinforcement has significantly reduced hemorrhagic complications, postoperative bleeding remains a concern, particularly from omentum or unidentified sources. The LigaSure device, known for sealing vessels successfully up to 7 mm in diameter, may face challenges in obese patients due to excessive omental fat.

Background: Paclitaxel (PTX) has been used as a chemotherapeutic agent for several malignancies, including breast cancer, and efforts to increase the efficiency of PTX are continuous. Previous studies have shown that the voltage-gated K channels are over-expressed in breast cancer cell lines; therefore, blocking this type of K channel reduces cell proliferation and viability.

Aims: In this study, FDA-approved 4-aminopyridine (4-AP), a voltage-gated potassium channel blocker, was used in combination with PTX to improve the anticancer activity of PTX in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cell lines.

Background: Lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among children globally. Copeptin, released by the pituitary gland, serves as a biomarker for various conditions and, as a neuroendocrine stress hormone, is useful in acute conditions. This study aimed to determine the role of copeptin levels in LRTI in children and whether it can reliably predict pneumonia severity.
