Purpose: To investigate the effects of varicocelectomy on premature ejaculation (PE) in patients with varicocele and infertility.

Methods: A total of 82 sexually active patients aged 18 years or over who had undergone microscopic subinguinal varicocelectomy with a clinical diagnosis of varicocele in 14 urology clinics between October 2021 and March 2023 with primary infertility were evaluated prospectively Patients were evaluated using the Turkish validated form of the 'Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool' (PEDT) scale. A PEDT score of 11 or above was taken to indicate the presence of PE.

Therapeutic modalities and clinical outcomes in a large cohort with LRBA deficiency and CTLA4 insufficiency.

J Allergy Clin Immunol

December 2023

Division of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology, School of Medicine, Marmara University, Istanbul, Turkey; Istanbul Jeffrey Modell Diagnostic and Research Center for Primary Immunodeficiencies, Istanbul, Turkey; The Isil Berat Barlan Center for Translational Medicine, Istanbul, Turkey. Electronic address:

Background: LPS-responsive beige-like anchor (LRBA) deficiency (LRBA) and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen-4 (CTLA4) insufficiency (CTLA4) are mechanistically overlapped diseases presenting with recurrent infections and autoimmunity. The effectiveness of different treatment regimens remains unknown.

Objective: Our aim was to determine the comparative efficacy and long-term outcome of therapy with immunosuppressants, CTLA4-immunoglobulin (abatacept), and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in a single-country multicenter cohort of 98 patients with a 5-year median follow-up.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated abdominal CT findings in COVID-19 patients and their relationship with demographic, clinical, and lab data.
  • Ischemic findings were present in 20.3% and non-ischemic in 27.7% of the 1,181 reviewed cases, with bowel wall thickening being the most common ischemic finding.
  • Patients with CT findings had longer hospital stays and higher mortality rates, indicating that abdominal symptoms in COVID-19 are significant and often linked to adverse outcomes.

SGLT2 inhibitors improve plasma atherogenic biomarkers in patients with type 2 diabetes: a real-world retrospective observational study.

Minerva Endocrinol (Torino)

September 2023

School of Medicine, Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Marmara University, Istanbul, Türkiye -

Background: There are cost-effective, non-invasive, and predictive tools used to predict the CVD risk in patients with diabetes such as the "atherogenic index of plasma (AIP)" which is defined as the logarithm to the base 10 of the ratio of fasting plasma TG (mg/dL) to HDL-C [log (TG/HDL-C)], triglyceride to high density lipoprotein (TG-to-HDL-C) ratio and the triglyceride glucose (TyG) index which is calculated as Ln (fasting TG [mg/dL] × fasting blood glucose (mg/dL)/2). These tools are indirect markers of atherosclerosis. Dapagliflozin and empagliflozin have exhibited cardiovascular beneficial effects and this study evaluated the effects of sodium glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) on AIP, TyG index and TG-to-HDL-C ratio in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Introduction: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of transition from premixed and intensive insulin to twice-daily insulin degludec/aspart (IDegAsp) co-formulation in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Material And Methods: In this 12-week study, patients receiving twice-daily premixed insulin therapy in group 1 ( = 55) were switched to twice-daily IDegAsp. In group 2 ( = 60), patients on intensive insulin therapy were switched to IDegAsp injected twice a day.

Paget's disease is a chronic benign bone disease characterized by excessive and abnormal bone remodeling. Monostotic Paget's disease accounts for only 20% of the cases, and the monostotic form involving the vertebra with the Mickey Mouse sign is very rare. Herein, we report a case of suspected bony metastasis in the second lumbar vertebra that was diagnosed as Paget's disease because of the Mickey Mouse sign on bone scintigraphy, and the diagnosis was confirmed by biopsy.

Context: Sodium Glucose Co-Transporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) are oral antidiabetic agents that can be used with insulin in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, known for cardiovascular and renal benefits. Dapagliflozin and empagliflozin are available in Turkey and we aimed to evaluate real-life data of using these two molecules with other oral antidiabetic drugs (OAD) or insulin.

Subjects And Methods: 119 patients (59 women, 60 men) files who had started SGLT2i between 2017-2019 were examined retrospectively until 6 months after the treatment change.

Background: House dust mite (Dermataphagoides pteronyssinus) is a widespread risk factor in the development of asthma. CD4 T lymphocytes have an important role in the pathogenesis of allergic asthma by polarizing to Th2 cells.

Objective: We aimed to evaluate the immunoregulatory effects of dental follicle mesenchymal stem cells with and without IFN-γ stimulation on peripheral blood mononuclear cells of house dust mite sensitive asthmatic patients, and compared those with Dexamethasone as a systemic steroid.

We compared the efficacy and safety of low-molecular-weight heparins (LMWHs) in patients with cancer who are at low risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Patients were treated by medical oncologists in Turkey at 15 sites, where they were enrolled and followed up for a period of 12 months. Due to the study design, there was no specific treatment protocol for LMWH.

Purpose: Pediatric high-grade gliomas (pHGGs) constitute almost 15% of all childhood brain tumors. Recurrent mutations such as H3K27M mutation in H3F3A and HIST1H3B genes encoding histone H3 and its variants were identified in approximately 30% of pediatric glioblastomas. This study aimed to ascertain the morphological and molecular characteristics of pHGGs with H3K27M mutation.

Background: Ovarian cancer is one of the highest mortality cancers in gynaecology. Discrimination of benign masses from malignant ones may sometimes become a challenge for the clinician since there is not a reliable tumour marker, thus some unnecessary, highly morbid operations can be performed.

Aims: To explore the efficacy of human epididymis 4 (HE 4) and cancer antigen 125 (CA 125) markers in differentiating malignant and benign pelvic masses of ovarian origin and to identify the cut-off points for those markers.

J Dev Behav Pediatr

January 2017

Objective: In April 2012, the Turkish national education system was modified, and the compulsory school age of entry (first grade) was redefined as a minimum of 60 months and a maximum of 66 months (replacing the former minimum criterion of 72 months). In this study, we hypothesized that students starting school before 72 months (the previous age standard for the first grade) may experience (1) a greater number of symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and (2) lower functioning in social, behavioral, and academic domains.

Method: We performed a cross-sectional community-based study in the first and second grades of all primary schools (4356 students) located in the Kadıköy county of Istanbul, Turkey.
