Article Synopsis
  • * Data were collected from 408 PCD patients across 12 countries, focusing on their lung function and the presence of common respiratory pathogens, with a significant finding that those with certain pathogens had lower lung function scores.
  • * The results indicated that certain pathogens were strongly associated with decreased lung function, particularly in adults, highlighting the need for early eradication strategies and timely treatment of infections in PCD patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Pulmonary endarterectomy is a surgical option for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) that can potentially cure the condition, and this study looked at factors influencing patient outcomes post-surgery.
  • The study analyzed data from 834 patients who underwent surgery between March 2014 and January 2024, revealing a 7.8% in-hospital mortality rate and highlighting that older patients (≥70 years) had a significantly higher mortality rate compared to younger patients (<70 years).
  • Key predictors of mortality included age, length of ICU stay, the Charlson Comorbidity Index, and six-minute walk distance, with the findings indicating that while elderly patients faced higher risks, the surgery could still lead

Approaches for the induction of neurogenesis and neuronal recovery through several modalities are gaining popularity in Parkinson's disease (PD). Growth hormone (GH) seems to have a role in the reversal of neural function following brain injury as well as in normal brain development and function; therefore, the use of GH may represent a feasible strategy in the management of PD. This experimental study aimed to evaluate the effect of growth hormone on motor function and dendrite morphology in rats with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced PD model.

The aim of the study is to examine relationships between shoulder extension-flexion and internal-external rotation strength of professional male handball players with throwing velocity, and the hip extension-flexion strength with horizontal and vertical reactive strength index. Fifteen professional male handball players participating in 1 League matches took part in the study. The results showed that isometric shoulder flexion and extension strength significantly predicted stable throwing velocity (r=between 0.

Cutting efficiency and corrosion resistance of heat-treated endodontic files after various disinfection protocols.

Odontology

July 2024

Department of Endodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, Marmara University, Başıbüyük Yolu Marmara Üniversitesi Başıbüyük Sağlık Yerleşkesi 9/3, Başıbüyük, Maltepe, P.O. Box: 34854, Istanbul, Turkey.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of various disinfection protocols on the cutting efficiency and chemical composition of ProTaper, Twisted File, Twisted File Adaptive, and Hedström files. Four experimental groups (n = 10) were presoaked in either enzymatic solution or 1% sodium hypochlorite for 30 min, followed by either 5 or 15 min of ultrasonic cleaning and then autoclaved. Resin-simulated canals with a single curvature of 38-40° were prepared by each instrument system.

Purpose: The Systemic Inflammatory Response Index (SIRI), which depends on peripheral neutrophil, monocyte, and lymphocyte count, was found to be an effective prognostic indicator for various malignancies. In this study, we aimed to investigate the diagnostic value and the prognostic impact of SIRI on rectal cancer patients.

Method: The medical records of patients underwent sphincter-sparing rectal cancer surgery at general surgery between 2017 and 2022 were examined retrospectively.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compared the effects of conventional and accelerated corneal crosslinking (CXL) on various eye health metrics in patients with progressive keratoconus.
  • Both treatment methods showed improvement in keratometric values and epithelial thickness after 6 months, but some epithelial thickness indices were reduced at 1 month post-surgery.
  • Accelerated CXL resulted in quicker recovery of corneal nerve density compared to conventional CXL, highlighting its potential advantages in nerve regeneration.

Cureus

March 2023

General Surgery, Marmara Üniversitesi Pendik Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, Istanbul, TUR.

With laparoscopic surgery becoming more popular in surgical practice, laparoscopic approaches in trauma patients have increased. Non-operative management is the standard treatment algorithm in patients with blunt abdominal trauma who are hemodynamically stable and have sustained a liver injury. However, laparoscopy is a safe and feasible method for exploration, irrigation, and treatment if a surgical intervention is needed in this group.
