A key reason for the persistently grim statistics associated with metastatic ovarian cancer is resistance to conventional agents, including platinum-based chemotherapies. A major source of treatment failure is the high degree of genetic and molecular heterogeneity, which results from significant underlying genomic instability, as well as stromal and physical cues in the microenvironment. Ovarian cancer commonly disseminates via transcoelomic routes to distant sites, which is associated with the frequent production of malignant ascites, as well as the poorest prognosis.

Chronic, non-healing skin and soft tissue wounds are susceptible to infection, difficult to treat clinically, and can severely reduce a patient's quality of life. A key aspect of this issue is the impaired recruitment of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which secrete regenerative cytokines and modulate the phenotypes of other effector cells that promote healing. We have engineered a therapeutic delivery system that can controllably release the pro-healing chemokine stromal cell derived factor-1α (SDF-1α) to induce the migration of MSCs.

Phages are heavily utilized in bioengineering for applications ranging from tissue engineering scaffolds to immune signal delivery. Targeting the tumor microenvironment (TME) provides opportunities to modulate tumor physiology, enhance the delivery of therapeutic agents, impact immune response and overcome resistance. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a photochemistry-based, nonthermal modality that produces reactive molecular species at the site of light activation and is in the clinic for nononcologic and oncologic applications. The unique mechanisms and exquisite spatiotemporal control inherent to PDT enable selective modulation or destruction of the TME and cancer cells.

The combination of photodynamic therapy and taxol- or platinum-based chemotherapy (photochemotherapy) is an effective and promising cancer treatment. While the mechanisms of action of photochemotherapy are actively studied, relatively little is known about the cytotoxicity and molecular alterations induced by the combination of chemotherapy and photosensitizers without light activation in cancer cells. This study investigates the interplay between the photosensitizer benzoporphyrin derivative (BPD) without light activation and cisplatin or paclitaxel in two glioblastoma lines, U87 and U251.

Autonomous robotic surgery systems aim to improve patient outcomes by leveraging the repeatability and consistency of automation and also reducing human induced errors. However, intraoperative autonomous soft tissue tracking and robot control still remains a challenge due to the lack of structure, and high deformability of such tissues. In this paper, we take advantage of biocompatible Near-Infrared (NIR) marking methods and develop a supervised autonomous 3D path planning, filtering, and control strategy for our Smart Tissue Autonomous Robot (STAR) to enable precise and consistent incisions on complex 3D soft tissues.

Objectives: Fluoride-containing orthodontic cements are used to combat white spot lesions (WSLs) in enamel. However, the fluoride (F) ion releases from these cements are relatively low and short-term.
