The most commonly used methods to chemically assess grape and wine quality with high sensitivity and selectivity require lengthy analysis time and can be resource intensive. Here, we developed a rapid and non-destructive method that would help in grading and decision support. In this work, we demonstrate that integrating a three-dimensional (3D) material for volatile sampling with mass spectrometry detection can be used to sample grapes for phytosanitary, quality or smoke-taint assessments at low levels of marker compounds.

Achieving sensors that can sensitively and selectively quantify levels of analytes in complex biofluids such as blood remains a significant challenge. To address this, we synthesized an array of isolated carbon nanochannels on a flat gold electrode that function as molecular sieves to prevent protein fouling and eliminate the need for antifouling layers. Utilizing a two-step pulsed technique, a reductive pulse expels negative interferences and fouling molecules followed by an oxidative pulse that oxidizes glucose at the bottom of the channel and on the gold surface.

Electron microscopy (EM) techniques have been crucial for understanding the structure of biological specimens such as cells, tissues and macromolecular assemblies. Viruses and related viral assemblies are ideal targets for structural studies that help to define essential biological functions. Whereas conventional EM methods use chemical fixation, dehydration, and staining of the specimens, cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) preserves the native hydrated state.

Background: Meta-analytic evidence has linked shame separately to both potentially traumatic events (PTEs) and psychosis, but the influence of shame on the relationship between PTEs and psychosis has not yet been examined. This study used meta-analytic structural equation modelling (MASEM) to examine whether shame plays a mediatory role between PTEs and experiences of psychosis.
Methods: A nested search was conducted within a previous systematic review on psychosis and shame to identify articles that contained a measure of PTEs.

Engineering magnetic nanoparticles with tunable structural properties and magnetism is critical to develop desirable magnetic particle imaging (MPI) tracers for biomedical applications. Here we present a new superparamagnetic metal oxide nanoparticle with a controllable chemical composition and magnetism for imaging tumor xenografts in living mice. Superparamagnetic Zn/Fe mixed metal oxide (ZnFe-MMO) nanoparticles are fabricated via a facile one-pot co-precipitation method in water followed by thermal decomposition with tunable Zn/Fe ratios and at various calcination temperatures.

T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) is an aggressive hematological malignancy that expresses high levels of the enzyme aldo-keto reductase family 1 member C3 (AKR1C3). To exploit this finding, we developed a novel prodrug, ACHM-025, which is selectively activated by AKR1C3 to a nitrogen mustard DNA alkylating agent. We show that ACHM-025 has potent in vivo efficacy against T-ALL patient-derived xenografts (PDXs) and eradicated the disease in 7 PDXs.

Tropomyosins (Tpms) are rod-shaped proteins that interact head-to-tail to form a continuous polymer along both sides of most cellular actin filaments. Head-to-tail interaction between adjacent Tpm molecules and the formation of an overlap complex between them leads to the assembly of actin filaments with one type of Tpm isoform in time and space. Variations in the affinity of tropomyosin isoforms for different actin structures are proposed as a potential sorting mechanism.

Parental warmth is a treatment target of emerging interventions for children with callous-unemotional traits. However, research to date has yet to examine the empirical structure of parental warmth toward young children due to the lack of clinically feasible, psychometrically sound, and comprehensive measures of warmth for this population. To address this knowledge gap, the present study developed and tested the psychometric properties of a self-report measure of parental warmth, the Parental Affection/Warmth Scale (PAWS).

Unambiguous targeting of cellular structures for in situ cryo-electron microscopy in the heterogeneous, dense and compacted environment of the cytoplasm remains challenging. Here, we have developed a cryogenic correlative light and electron microscopy (cryo-CLEM) workflow that utilizes thin cells grown on a mechanically defined substratum for rapid analysis of organelles and macromolecular complexes by cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET). We coupled these advancements with optogenetics to redistribute perinuclear-localised organelles to the cell periphery, allowing visualisation of organelles that would otherwise be positioned in cellular regions too thick for cryo-ET.

Current guidelines for treating vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT) recommend nonheparin anticoagulants and IV immunoglobulin (IVIg). However, the efficacy of these treatments remains uncertain due to case studies involving small patient numbers, confounding factors (eg, concurrent treatments), and a lack of animal studies. A recent study proposed danaparoid and heparin as potential VITT therapies because of their ability to disrupt VITT IgG-platelet factor 4 (PF4) binding.

The accumulation of iron in dopaminergic neurons can cause oxidative stress and dopaminergic neuron degeneration. Iron chelation therapy may reduce dopaminergic neurodegeneration, but chelators should be targeted towards dopaminergic cells. In this work, two series of compounds based on 8-hydroxyquinoline and deferiprone, iron chelators that have amphetamine-like structures, have been designed, synthesized and characterized.
