Background: Although sex differences in cardiovascular diseases are recognised, including differences in incidence, clinical presentation, response to treatments, and outcomes, most of the practice guidelines are not sex-specific. Heart failure (HF) is a major public health challenge, with high health care expenditures, high prevalence, and poor clinical outcomes. The objective was to analyse the sex-specific association of socio-demographics, life-style factors and health characteristics with the prevalence of HF and diastolic left ventricular dysfunction (DLVD) in a cross-sectional population-based study.

Article Synopsis
  • Adalimumab biosimilars entered the European market in October 2018, with significant price variations and discounts on the originator product influencing availability and market dynamics in different countries.
  • The research surveyed experts across 30 European countries to assess the financing, reimbursement status, and pricing of originator adalimumab and the presence of biosimilars, noting that by May 2019, biosimilars were available in 24 of those countries.
  • Overall, while the list prices of originator adalimumab generally decreased after losing exclusivity, some countries maintained their prices, and very few implemented specific policies to foster competition with biosimilars.

Article Synopsis
  • Adolescence exposure to cocaine can increase drug use in adulthood, but the effects vary depending on how the drug was administered during that time.
  • A study found that adolescent cocaine exposure raised the rewarding threshold for cocaine in adulthood, meaning that a higher dose was needed to elicit a preference for the drug.
  • The research suggests that both contingent and non-contingent exposure to cocaine during adolescence can lead to desensitization towards lower doses, which could increase the likelihood of higher consumption of cocaine in the future.

Acute inflammation is a complex biological response of tissues to harmful stimuli, such as pathogens or cell damage, and is essential for immune defense and proper healing. However, unresolved inflammation can lead to chronic disorders, including cancer and fibrosis. The High Mobility Group Box 1 (HMGB1) protein is a Damage-Associated Molecular Pattern (DAMP) molecule that orchestrates key events in inflammation by switching among mutually exclusive redox states.

Article Synopsis
  • Local protein synthesis at synapses has been shown to play a crucial role in brain plasticity, challenging the idea that protein synthesis mainly occurs in the cell body and dendrites.
  • The study examined protein synthesis in TgCRND8 mice, which model Alzheimer's disease, finding differences in newly synthesized proteins at synapses compared to control mice, with some evidence of local APP synthesis.
  • Results indicated that while control mice showed enhanced protein synthesis at synapses after learning tasks, TgCRND8 mice did not, suggesting that impaired local protein synthesis may contribute to the early development of Alzheimer's pathology.

Physical activity improves the prognosis of cancer patients, partly by contrasting the associated muscle wasting (cachexia), through still unknown mechanisms. We asked whether aerobic exercise causes secretion by skeletal muscles of proteins (myokines) that may contrast cachexia. Media conditioned by peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator 1α (PGC1α)-expressing myotubes, reproducing some metabolic adaptations of aerobic exercise, as increased mitochondrial biogenesis and oxidative phosphorylation, restrained constitutively active Forkhead box-containing subfamily O3 (caFoxO3)-induced proteolysis.
