Medium-term outcomes in single anaesthetic bilateral total knee replacement surgery: a single surgeon series.

Arch Orthop Trauma Surg

October 2022

Dunedin Public and Mercy Hospitals, Suite 3, Marinoto Clinic, Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand.

Background: The lifetime risk of developing symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA) is estimated to be 45%, with up to two thirds of patients presenting with bilateral knee symptoms. Patients presenting with end stage bilateral knee OA may benefit from single anaesthetic bilateral total knee replacement (SABTKR). Our study aim was to compare the outcomes of SABTKR with unilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in a single surgeon series over a 20 year period.

Clinical Findings And Treatment: A computed tomography (CT) examination revealed a full-thickness circular defect in the central cranium with suspected herniation of brain and dura.

Background And Aim: Breath testing (BT) is used to identify carbohydrate malabsorption and small intestine bacterial overgrowth. Measuring methane alongside hydrogen is advocated to reduce false-negative studies, but the variability of methane production is unknown. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of high methane production on hydrogen excretion after ingesting lactulose, fructose, or lactose.

Position Effect on Facial Soft Tissue Depths: A Sonographic Investigation.

J Forensic Sci

January 2016

Department of Anatomy - Otago School of Medical Sciences, University of Otago, P.O. Box 56, Dunedin, 9054, New Zealand.

The head is positioned erect for an approximation; yet most facial soft tissue depths (FSTD) used are measured from supine subjects. Depth difference might be significant, but there is a paucity of data to verify. This study compared erect and supine values for 17 landmarks from 30 healthy New Zealand (European population affinity) women (18-30 or 40-55 years) in erect then supine positions.

For patients in who conservative management fails, surgery remains an option. The optimal method of surgery remains debatable and is further confounded by a relative lack of long-term follow-up studies.
