Majority of macrozooplankton have a wider dietary niche breadth and utilize small invertebrates, microzooplankton and mesozooplankton, so effect on primary production might be through trophic cascading effect. To better understand the ecosystem structure of benthic oyster-macroalgae reefs, we analyzed zooplankton community structure before (July 2016) and after (from September 2016 to October 2017) the construction of benthic reefs in the 2 km2 sea ranch area in Xiangyun Cove, Tangshan, China. We identified 57 zooplankton species, including the 12 cnidarian (e.

Hatchery rearing significantly influences the phenotypic development of fish, with potential adverse effects for the post-release performance of hatchery-reared individuals in natural environments, especially when targeted for stock enhancement. To assess the suitability of releasing hatchery-reared fish, a comprehensive understanding of the phenotypic effects of captive rearing, through comparisons with their wild conspecifics, is essential. In this study, we investigated the divergence in body coloration between wild and hatchery-reared marbled rockfish .

The cuttlefish, Sepia pharaonis, is characterized by rapid growth and strong disease resistance, making it an important commercially farmed cephalopod species in the southeastern coastal regions of China. However, in the reproductive process of S. pharaonis, there are challenges such as a low output of eggs, poor quality, and low survival rates of newly hatched juveniles.

Artificial oyster reefs provide important spawning and nursery grounds for a variety of fishes and large mobile crustaceans. Between July 2016 and May 2017, seasonal surveys of species composition and community structure were performed in the artificial oyster reef area and control area adjacent to the Luanhe River Estuary in China. During the survey year, 56 species belonging to 50 genera, 45 families, and 19 orders were recorded.

Aquaculture has expanded to become the fastest growing food-producing sector in the world. However, its expansion has come under threat due to an increase in diseases caused by pathogens such as iridoviruses commonly found in aquatic environments used for fish farming. Of the seven members belonging to the family , the three genera causing diseases in fish comprise ranaviruses, lymphocystiviruses and megalocytiviruses.

Tributyltin (TBT) is a typical organic pollutant that persists in aquatic sediments due to its wide usage as an antifouling fungicide during the past few decades. Despite increased awareness of the serious negative consequences of TBT on aquatic species, studies on the effects of TBT exposure on cephalopod embryonic development and juvenile physiological performance are scarce. To investigate the lasting effects of TBT toxicity on Sepia pharaonis from embryo to hatchling, embryos (gastrula stage, 3-5 h post fertilization) were exposed to four levels of TBT until hatching: 0 (control), 30 (environmental level), 60, and 120 ng/L.

Host-related microbiota are critically important for the adaptation/acclimation of hosts to changing environments, but how environmental factors and host characteristics shape the microbial communities remains largely unknown. We investigated the effects of temperature on habitat-forming macroalgae and their associated bacterial communities. Three Sargassum species (S.

Psychotropic drugs are one of the most commonly used drugs in the world. Hence, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of environmentally-relevant concentrations of the antipsychotic drugs, sulpiride and clozapine, on dopaminergic (DAergic) and serotonergic (5-HTergic) neurotransmitter systems in the brain of zebrafish.

In this study, the sorption behaviors and mechanisms between polystyrene microplastics (micro-PS) and 4-rings polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pyrene (Pyr) and its derivatives (S-Pyr), including 1-methylpyrene (P-CH), 1-hydroxypyrene (P-OH), 1-aminopyrene (P-NH), 1-pyrenecarboxylic acid (P-COOH) were investigated at neutrality. The results revealed that the sorption rates of micro-PS for S-Pyr were higher than those for parent Pyr. Meanwhile, -CH could slightly facilitate the sorption, whereas -OH, P-NH, and P-COOH intensively inhibit the sorption of S-Pyr onto micro-PS.

In recent years, red tide pollution in China has become increasingly serious, leading to a number of shellfish poisoning cases, thereby posing a threat to human health and safety. Okadaic acid (OA) and its analogs (dinophysistoxins, DTXs) are the most widely distributed diarrhetic shellfish poisons, which result in acute diarrheal toxicity and various types of chronic toxicity. It is imperative to establish a method for determination of OA related toxin residues in biological fluid samples, so that accurate diagnosis of poisoning in patients is possible.

Animal taxa show remarkable variability in sexual reproduction, where separate sexes, or gonochorism, is thought to have evolved from hermaphroditism for most cases. Hermaphroditism accounts for 5% in animals, and sequential hermaphroditism has been found in teleost. In this study, we characterized a novel form of the transient hermaphroditic stage in little yellow croaker () during early gonadal development.
