Hypoxia causes irreversible damage to aquatic animals. However, few reports have explored the effect of hypoxia stress and reoxygenation on intestinal homeostatic imbalance and consequent hepatopancreas-intestine axis health in crustacean. Herein, 180 Chinese mitten crabs (Eriocheir sinensis) were equally divided into control (DO 7.

Olfaction, a universal form of chemical communication, is a powerful channel for animals to obtain social and environmental cues. The mechanisms by which fish olfaction affects reproduction, breeding and disease control are not yet clear. To evaluate metabolites profiles, plasma from anosmic and control black porgy during reproduction was analyzed by non-targeted metabolomics using ultra high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and multivariate statistical analysis techniques, including principal component analysis and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis.

Background: Mangroves possess substantial ecological, social, and economic functions in tropical and subtropical coastal wetlands. Kandelia obovata is the most cold-resistance species among mangrove plants, with a widespread distribution in China that ranges from Sanya (18° 12' N) to Wenzhou (28° 20' N). Here, we explored the temporal variations in physiological status and transcriptome profiling of K.

Marine microplastic pollution is a major environmental challenge that threatens marine ecosystems and human health. Several models have been used to calculate and predict the theoretical amount of plastic waste discharged into the sea by coastal countries. Unlike earlier theoretical models of source discharge, we used the method of data normalisation to focus on the actual distribution of microplastics and their potential ecological risk in offshore surface waters.

Marine microplastic pollution has become a major global concern in recent years and the fate of microplastics in the ocean is a hot issue of research. We investigated microplastic pollution in surface sediments in the northern South China Sea to explore its distribution characteristics and influencing factors across the continental shelf, continental slope, and deep-sea environments. It was found that the microplastic abundance of surface sediments was 130.

In this study, we present the complete mitogenome and a phylogenetic analysis of , determined by long PCR and primer walking methods. The complete mitochondrial genome is a circular molecule of 16,491 bp in length and contains the same set of 37 mitochondrial genes (13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNA (rRNA), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA)), and a control region as other bony fishes. The base composition of the entire mitogenome showed a slight excess of AT bias.

Human-induced catchment changes have affected the sedimentary processes in marginal seas, which will impact the transport and burial processes of materials and inevitably impact marine biogeochemical cycles. Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and sediment characteristics in surface sediments from the East China Sea (ECS) at two time points (2006 and 2018) were compared to understand the response of OCPs to human-induced catchment changes. A significant coarsening trend occurred after the impoundment of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD), with the mean grain size increasing from 6.

Insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-2 (IGFBP-2) plays a key role in regulating growth and development by its affinity with insulin-like growth factors (IGFs). In this study, we cloned the coding sequence (CDS) of IGFBP-2a from the black porgy (Acanthopagrus schlegelii) muscle and identified that the full-length CDS of IGFBP-2a was 882 bp. Real-time quantitative PCR revealed that IGFBP-2a was most abundant in the liver of the black porgy and backcross breed (F1♀×black porgy♂) but remained lower in each tested tissue in self-cross breed (F1♀×F1♂).

At present, the study of microplastic sources is in a relatively preliminary stage due to the complexity of microplastic features in the environment. Based on a literature review, we developed a source-specific classification system for the quantitative analysis of microplastic sources. The classification system includes ten types of microplastics based on morphology and composition and can identify their main sources and the associated probabilities.

Eutrophication often leads to the periodic proliferation of harmful cyanobacterial blooms (HCBs), which threaten the sustainability of freshwater ecosystems and lead to serious environmental, health and economic damage. Hence, it is vitally important to take effective measures to manage HCBs and associated problems. In this study, vertical flow constructed wetlands (CWs) were operated under different hydraulic loading rates (HLRs) to treat a hyper-eutrophic water body with HCBs.

Intensive anthropogenic activities have a serious negative effect on the Jiangsu coastal area of China, especially on the distinctive intertidal zone. Humans are trying to eliminate this effect by taking protection and eco-compensation measures. However, when trying to determine the ecological status and quantify the anthropogenic impact for this area, the complex relationship between ecosystems and environmental stress leads to difficulties in reflecting general environmental quality.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are mainly produced by incomplete combustion and are used as indicators of anthropogenic activities on the environment. This study analyses the PAHs level in the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE), an important component of Yangtze River and a developed and populated region in China. Surface sediments were collected from 77 sites at the YRE and its adjacent coastal zone (IACZ) for a comprehensive study of PAHs.

Sediment anoxia generally results from intense organic enrichment and is a limiting factor in the restoration of vegetation in eutrophic waters. To investigate the effect of sediment anoxia on a typical pollution-tolerant submerged macrophyte species, Hydrilla verticillata, and acclimation mechanisms in the plant, a gradient of sediment anoxia was simulated with additions of sucrose to the sediment, which can stimulate increased concentrations of total nitrogen, NH4(+) and Fe in pore water.
