In bivalves and gastropods, ventricle contraction causes a negative pressure in the auricles and increases venous return from the afferent oblique vein (AOV): the constant-volume (CV) mechanism. The flow in the AOV should be a pulsative flow synchronized with the ventricular contraction. In order to investigate the foot manipulation of a clam without a Keber's valve, Calyptogena okutanii was examined by light microscopy, magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography. The Am concentrations were determined by sector field high-resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry for settling particles and surface sediments collected on the continental margin in the East China Sea to discuss the behavior of Am in the studied area. A large and regular increase was noted from 97 m depth to 592 m depth in Am concentrations in settling particles from the cylindrical sediment traps, whereas only a slight increase in Pu concentrations was evident. The gradual increase in Am/Pu activity ratios from the cylindrical trap settling particles also was observed.

We measured the concentrations of cesium isotopes (Cs, Cs, and Cs) in zooplankton samples collected in waters off the east coast of Japan from May 2015 to June 2020. By combining these data with those obtained previously from May 2012 to February 2015, we evaluated the long-term impacts of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident on marine zooplankton. Relatively high Cs concentrations in zooplankton, exceeding 10 Bq/kg-dry weight, were sporadically observed until June 2016, regardless of year or station.

An international review of radioecological data derived after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was an important component of activities in working group 4 of the IAEA Models and data for radiological impact assessment, phase II (MODARIA II) programme. Japanese and international scientists reviewed radioecological data in the terrestrial and aquatic environments in Japan reported both before and after the accident. The environmental transfer processes considered included: (a) interception and retention radionuclides by plants, (b) loss of radionuclides from plant and systemic transport of radionuclides in plants (translocation), (c) behaviour of radiocaesium in soil, (d) uptake of radionuclides from soil by agricultural crops and wild plants, (e) transfer of radionuclides from feedstuffs to domestic and wild animals, (f) behaviour of radiocaesium in forest trees and forest systems, (g) behaviour of radiocaesium in freshwater systems, coastal areas and in the ocean, (h) transport of radiocaesium from catchments through rivers, streams and lakes to the ocean, (i) uptake of radiocaesium by aquatic organisms, and (j) modification of radionuclide concentrations in food products during food processing and culinary preparation.

Introduction: Fishes of the Syngnathidae family are rare in having male pregnancy: males receive eggs from females and egg development occurs in the male brood pouch that diverged during evolution. The family is divided into two subfamilies: Nerophinae and Syngnathinae.
Methods: We compared histologically five types of the brood pouch in Syngnathinae: an open pouch without skinfolds (alligator pipefish); an open pouch with skinfolds (messmate pipefish); a closed pouch with skinfolds (seaweed pipefish); and closed pouches with a sac-like pouch on the tail (pot-bellied seahorse) or within a body cavity (Japanese pygmy seahorse).

Accidental leakage of radionuclides from the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP1) took place in the aftermath of the catastrophic tsunamis associated with the Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred on March 11, 2011. Significant amount of radionuclides released into the atmosphere were reportedly transported and deposited on land located near FNPP1. The Niida River, Fukushima, Japan, has been recognized as a terrestrial source of highly contaminated suspended radiocesium adhering to sediment particles in the ocean through the river mouth as a result of hydrological processes.

We investigated the internal contamination by radioactive cesium associated with the FDNPP accident, in the testes or uterus and ovaries of free-roaming cats (), which were protected by volunteers in the Namie Town, Fukushima. A total of 253 samples (145 testes and 108 uterus and ovaries) obtained from adult cats and 15 fetuses from 3 pregnant female cats were measured. Free-roaming cats in Namie Town had a higher level of radioactive contamination in comparison to the control group in Tokyo, as the Cs + Cs activity concentration ranged from not detectable to 37,882 Bq kg in adult cats.
