Institute of Molecular Oncology and Experimental Therapeutics, Division of Hematology and Oncology, Ruhr University Bochum Medical School, Marien Hospital Herne, Düngelstr. 33, 44623, Herne, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • Acquired resistance to cisplatin, a common treatment for ovarian cancer, presents significant challenges in therapy effectiveness, leading researchers to identify a new phenomenon in cancer cell behavior.
  • This study introduces the concept of epithelial-mesenchymal-ectodermal transition (EMET), which describes how ovarian cancer cells undergo a transformation that includes characteristics of neuronal differentiation and stemness, indicating a shift in their cellular identity.
  • The researchers also found that a small population of these cancer cells, which exhibit both neuronal-like features and multidrug resistance, likely originate from neural cells, suggesting that ovarian cancer may arise from a neuroepithelial lineage.

Article Synopsis
  • Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is a genetic condition marked by inflammation episodes, usually treated with colchicine to prevent complications like amyloid A amyloidosis, but its necessity for heterozygous patients is debated.* -
  • A study analyzed 747 FMF patients' demographic and inflammatory biomarker data, revealing that heterozygous patients generally exhibited lower inflammatory markers compared to those with more severe genetic variants.* -
  • The findings suggest that certain biomarkers (S100A8/A9 and S100A12) can indicate disease activity, and some heterozygous patients may be eligible to safely stop colchicine treatment.*

Purpose: Combined modality treatment with chemotherapy followed by consolidation radiation therapy (RT) provides excellent outcomes for patients with early-stage Hodgkin lymphoma. The international standard of care for consolidation RT, involved-site/involved-node radiation therapy (ISRT/INRT), has never been evaluated in a randomized phase 3 trial against the former standard involved-field radiation therapy (IFRT).

Methods And Materials: In the multicenter phase 3 GHSG (German Hodgkin Study Group) HD17 trial, patients with early-stage unfavorable Hodgkin lymphoma were randomized between the standard Combined modality treatment group and a positron-emission tomography (PET)-guided group.

Urologie 24, St. Theresienkrankenhaus, Nürnberg, Germany; Studienpraxis Urologie, Nürtingen, Germany. Electronic address:

A plethora of urine markers for the management of patients with bladder cancer has been developed and studied in the past. However, the clinical impact of urine testing on patient management remains obscure. The goal of this manuscript is to identify scenarios for the potential use of molecular urine markers in the follow-up of patients with high-risk non-muscle-invasive BC (NMIBC) and estimate potential risks and benefits.

Background: The importance of music in intensive care medicine is still controversial and the mechanisms of music are unclear. It is important whether different music styles (classical music [CM], Heavy Metal [HM] show measurable effects on blood pressure (BP) or heart rate (HR) in humans or not. It is also unclear whether behavioral patterns are influenced by music (CM, HM) in animals.

Impact of individualized treatment on recovery from fatigue and return to work in survivors of advanced-stage Hodgkin's lymphoma: results from the randomized international GHSG HD18 trial.

Ann Oncol

March 2024

Department I of Internal Medicine, Center for Integrated Oncology Aachen Bonn Cologne Duesseldorf, University of Cologne, Medical Faculty and University Hospital Cologne, Cologne; German Hodgkin Study Group (GHSG), Cologne.

Background: Persisting cancer-related fatigue impairs health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and social reintegration in patients with Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL). The GHSG HD18 trial established treatment de-escalation for advanced-stage HL guided by positron emission tomography after two cycles (PET-2) as new standard. Here, we investigate the impact of treatment de-escalation on long-term HRQoL, time to recovery from fatigue (TTR-F), and time to return to work (TTR-W).

Introduction: Sarcopenia (SP) is defined as the pathological loss of muscle mass and function. This is a clinically relevant problem, especially in geriatric patients, because SP is associated with falls, frailty, loss of function, and increased mortality. People with inflammatory and degenerative rheumatic musculoskeletal disorders (RMD) are also at risk for developing SP; however, there is little research on the prevalence of this health disorder in this patient group using currently available SP criteria.
