Background: A mnemonic is a cognitive aid frequently used in health-related education. The main goal of this study was to develop and test a 5-finger mnemonic for teaching schoolchildren the theoretical aspects of adult Basic Life Support (BLS) steps, a process rarely described in the context of instructing laypersons.

Methods: Experts from the European Resuscitation Council's Basic Life Support Science and Education Committee (ERC BLS SEC), specializing in teaching adult BLS, participated in the first phase of the pilot study.

Background And Objectives: Polymeric clamp-like devices present potential advantages regarding plates and screws to close craniotomies; however, no clinical research has provided enough evidence to compare them. This randomized controlled trial compares the clinical safety and performance of clamp-like devices with the standard of care for craniotomy closure: titanium plates and screws (P&S).

Methods: A prospective, double-arm, multicenter randomized controlled trial was performed at 3 sites, recruiting 60 patients undergoing neurosurgical interventions requiring craniotomy.

Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Maribor, Žitna ulica 15, Maribor, SI, 2000, Slovenia.

Background: The use of immersive technology in healthcare education is on the rise, yet its impact on learner engagement, knowledge retention, and specifically in areas like hand hygiene training, remains underexplored. The aim of this scoping review was to summarize the existing studies of immersive technology in hand hygiene training of healthcare providers and health professions students.

Methods: A scoping review following the Levac et al.

Background: Pituitary adenomas represent the most common pituitary disorder, with an estimated prevalence as high as 20%, and they can manifest with hormone hypersecretion or deficiency, neurological symptoms from mass effect, or incidental findings on imaging. Transsphenoidal surgery, performed either microscopically or endoscopically, allows for a better extent of resection while minimising the associated risk in comparison to the transcranial approach. Endoscopy allows for better visualisation and improvement in tumour resection with an improved working angle and less nasal morbidity, making it likely to become the preferred surgical treatment for pituitary neoplasms.

We report a case of a 34-year-old man with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) presenting with dyspnea, cough, and hoarse voice. The patient was found to have severe pulmonary hypertension secondary to a large atrial septal defect (ASD). In this article, we discuss the challenges patients with FAS and other patients with cognitive impairments face that could explain the first diagnosis of such a large cardiac birth defect being made in the patient's adulthood.

Background: The "chain of survival" was first systematically addressed in 1991, and its sequence still forms the cornerstone of current resuscitation guidelines. The term "chain of survival" is widely used around the world in literature, education, and awareness campaigns, but growing heterogeneity in the components of the chain has led to confusion. It is unclear which of these emerging chains is most suitable, or if adaptations are needed in particular contexts to depict key actions of resuscitation in the 21st century.

Aim: Our aim was to conduct a thorough comparison between the hand hygiene information included in international nursing textbooks and the Slovenian nursing textbook's equivalent content as it relates to nursing procedures.

Background: Hand hygiene practices are crucial in preventing healthcare-associated infections, which affect millions of patients annually. The idea behind "Five Moments for Hand Hygiene" is to encourage assessing success and boosting self-efficacy.

Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), compared with other instructional methods, for basic and advanced life support training.

Methods: This systematic review was part of the continuous evidence evaluation process of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) and reported based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines and registered with PROSPERO (CRD42023376751). MEDLINE, EMBASE, and SCOPUS were searched from inception to January 16, 2024.

  • Nursing students often forget basic life support (BLS) skills after initial training, prompting organizations like the European Resuscitation Council and American Heart Association to recommend more frequent, technology-enhanced training methods.* -
  • The study tested a smartphone game called MOBICPR to see if it could improve nursing students' BLS knowledge and skills when used at home.* -
  • Results showed that while the MOBICPR game improved theoretical knowledge among participants, it did not significantly enhance practical skills, and retention of both was similar after a 2-week break.*

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to utilize generative AI for conducting a bibliometric analysis of abstracts from the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) annual scientific congress over the past decade, focusing on trends in ERC guideline topics.
  • The research involved using web scraping software to collect data from the Resuscitation journal and employing ChatGPT-4 for classifying abstract titles according to ERC 2021 guidelines topics.
  • Results indicated a total of 2,491 abstracts published between 2012 and 2022, with varying annual publication counts and identified the most and least common ERC guideline topics, showcasing how generative AI can effectively enhance bibliometric analysis in medical research.
