Bone is the most common site of distant metastases in breast cancer that can cause severe and debilitating skeletal related events (SRE) including hypercalcemia of malignancy, pathologic fracture, spinal cord compression and the need for palliative radiation therapy or surgery to the bone. SRE are associated with substantial pain and morbidity leading to frequent hospitalization, impaired quality of life and poor prognosis. The past 25 years of research on the pathophysiology of bone metastases led to the development of highly effective treatment options to delay or prevent osseous metastases and SRE.

Embolization of spinal dural arteriovenous fistula via the retrocorporeal artery: case report.

Neurosurgery

December 2013

*Department of Interventional Neuroradiology, Dupuytren University Hospital, Limoges, France; ‡Department of Radiology, Maribor Teaching Hospital, Maribor, Slovenia.

Background And Importance: The goal of spinal dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) treatment is to permanently occlude the proximal draining vein and the fistula itself, which can be achieved by open surgery or endovascular treatment. The endovascular approach is currently the primary treatment, but it requires the presence of an access as close to the site of the fistula as possible. This case illustrates that the retrocorporeal artery may be an alternative option in case of previous embolization failure with proximal occlusion of the radicular arteries.

In a homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR)-positive group of women with polycystic ovary syndrome undergoing in vitro maturation (IVM), the maturation rate of immature oocytes was significantly lower compared with a HOMA-IR negative group of women (47% vs. 59%). The results of our study showed that IR and hyperinsulinemia have an adverse effect on the developmental potential of immature oocytes retrieved in the IVM procedure.

Reprod Biomed Online

June 2007

Maribor Teaching Hospital, Department of Reproductive Medicine, Ljubljanska 5, SI-2000 Maribor, Slovenia.

Embryo transfer policy and luteal supplementation was reviewed, comparing literature data and the results from the Maribor IVF Centre. A retrospective analysis of 1024 cycles in patients undergoing IVF, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) or testicular sperm aspiration in unstimulated cycles was carried out using four different approaches for cycle monitoring. This showed that the most successful protocol for monitoring was administration of human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) when serum oestradiol was >0.

Different approaches to surgical treatment of arachnoid cysts.

Wien Klin Wochenschr

September 2006

Department of Neurosurgery, Maribor Teaching Hospital, Ljubljanska ulica 5, 2000 Maribor, Slovenia.

Although most arachnoid cysts remain static fluid-filled compartments throughout life, some become enlarged, exerting a mass effect on adjacent neural structures. The decision-making process for patients with arachnoid cysts still represents a challenge for the neurosurgeon. We report three cases of intracranial arachnoid cysts treated with different surgical approaches: (i) endoscopic fenestration of the cyst into the lateral ventricle; (ii) a cystoperitoneal shunt; (iii) a cystoperitoneal shunt and establishment of communication between the cyst and the fourth ventricle with the help of an endoscope.
