Background: The 3-variable number-of-risk-factors (NRF) model is a prognostic tool for patients undergoing palliative radiotherapy (PRT). However, there is little research on the NRF model for patients with painful non-bone-metastasis tumours treated with PRT, and the efficacy of the NRF model in predicting survival is unclear to date. Therefore, we aimed to assess the prognostic accuracy of a 3-variable NRF model in patients undergoing PRT for bone and non- bone-metastasis tumours.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how mismatched residual mitral regurgitation (MR) and left atrial pressure (LAP) after a specific heart procedure (TEER) can negatively impact clinical outcomes in patients with severe MR and heart failure.
  • - Researchers categorized 1,477 patients into three groups based on their MR and LAP levels, finding that those with mismatched or poor conditions faced higher risks of death and heart failure hospitalization compared to those in an optimal state.
  • - Six key factors were identified as predictors of hemodynamic mismatch after TEER, including body mass index and pre-procedural pressures, suggesting that monitoring these could help improve patient outcomes.

Clin Nutr

November 2024

Department of Disaster and Emergency Medicine, Graduate School of Medicine, Kobe University, 7-5-2 Kusunoki, Chuo, Kobe, Hyogo, 650-0017, Japan. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Thiamine is a key nutrient for energy metabolism, and while its deficiency is common in critically ill patients, the effects of supplementation are not well understood.
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis of 35 studies with nearly 3,500 patients found that thiamine supplementation didn’t significantly affect mortality but may reduce shock duration, lactate levels, and the SOFA score, indicating potential improvement in patient conditions.
  • However, thiamine administration also slightly increased the length of ICU stay, suggesting that while it can help with certain health metrics, it does not translate into lower death rates.

Article Synopsis
  • - HTLV-1 can quickly transform CD4+ T cells in a lab setting, but most infected people remain asymptomatic, indicating a balance between the virus and the host's immune response.
  • - The study found a variant in the HTLV-1 Tax301-309 viral antigen in individuals with a specific HLA-A24 type, which affected the detection of anti-Tax cytotoxic T cells (CTLs).
  • - More than half of the T-cell receptors (TCRs) from these anti-Tax CTLs failed to recognize the mismatched Tax301-309 peptides, underlining the need for precise matching of viral antigens in T-cell therapy for adult T-cell leukemia (ATL).
