In situ synthesis of AgI on the nanosilica surface for potential application as a cloud seeding material.

A series of nanosilica/AgI composites was synthesized by in situ reactions between silver nitrate and ammonium iodide deposited on the nanosilica surface using the gas-phase solvate-stimulated mechanosorption modification (GSSMSM) under both dry and wet conditions. The characterization of the synthesized materials was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), SEM/EDX (Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray), thermogravimetric (TGA) and gas sorption methods. As a result of the mechanosorption modification of nanosilica, the bulk density of the samples synthesized in the dry and wet medium increases from 45 g/l for initial nanosilica to 249 g/l and 296 g/l for the modified samples, respectively.

Entero-vulnerosorbents based on geometrically modified (GM) (mechanical treatment at different times, = 1, 4, and 7 h) fumed nanosilica A300 (NS) and protein molecules (human serum albumin/GM-nanosilica systems) were characterized with a focus on their surface, morphology, topography, and thermal properties. Microscopic, spectroscopic, and analytical techniques, including atomic force microscopy (AFM), optical profilometry (OP), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and elemental analysis (CHN), were used. The differentiation in the surface morphology, micro-nanoroughness, surface chemistry, thermal properties of the silica support, and protein/nanosilica systems were found.

The superabsorbents' application as materials for the preparation of modern mineral fertilizers of controlled activity is presented. Under the static conditions, the commercial acrylic-based Agro Hydrogel was used as a sorbent for Cu(II), Fe(III), Mn(II), and Zn(II) ions in the presence of three biodegradable complexing agents of the new generation: (N-1,2-dicarboxyethyl)-D,L-aspartate acid (IDHA), N,N-ethylenediaminedisuccinic acid (EDDS) and N,N-bis(carboxymethyl) glutamic acid (GLDA). In response to both biotic and abiotic stresses, vascular plants transmit long-distance Ca2+ and electrical signals from localized stress sites to distant tissues through their vasculature. Various models have been proposed for the mechanisms underlying the long-distance signaling, primarily centered around the presence of vascular bundles. We here demonstrate that the non-vascular liverwort Marchantia polymorpha possesses a mechanism for propagating Ca2+ waves and electrical signals in response to wounding.

Discrete symmetries play an important role in particle physics with violation of CP connected to the matter-antimatter imbalance in the Universe. We report the most precise test of P, T and CP invariance in decays of ortho-positronium, performed with methodology involving polarization of photons from these decays. Positronium, the simplest bound state of an electron and positron, is of recent interest with discrepancies reported between measured hyperfine energy structure and theory at the level of 10 signaling a need for better understanding of the positronium system at this level.

The number of people affected by cancer and antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections has increased, such that both diseases are already seen as current and future leading causes of death globally. To address this issue, based on a combined in silico and in vitro approach, we explored the anticancer potential of known antibacterials with a thiazolidinedione-thiosemicarbazone (TZD-TSC) core structure. A cytotoxicity assessment showed encouraging results for compounds -, with IC values against T98G and HepG2 cells in the low micromolar range.

The adsorption mechanism of different polymers containing ionic polyamino acids monomers in the chain structure at the solid-liquid interface was investigated. Initially, the influence of molecular weight and solution pH on simple polyamino acids (poly(L-aspartic acid) and poly(L-lysine) binding was determined. Considering the obtained dependencies, the polymer adsorption layer conformation was proposed in the systems containing block copolymers (both diblock and symmetrical triblock) consisting of polypeptide as well as poly(ethylene glycol) fragments.

The atomic composition, structural arrangement and electronic properties of the molecules on the Au(111) surface have been deeply explored by non-contact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM), bond-resolved scanning tunnelling microscopy (BR-STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) corroborated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This article presents a novel theoretical perspective on the role of cognitive biases within the autism and schizophrenia spectrum by integrating the evolutionary and computational approaches. Against the background of neurodiversity, cognitive biases are presented as primary adaptive strategies, while the compensation of their shortcomings is a potential cognitive advantage. The article delineates how certain subtypes of autism represent a unique cognitive strategy to manage cognitive biases at the expense of rapid and frugal heuristics.

A series of carbon composites were synthesised by carbonisation of resorcinol-formaldehyde resin mixtures with the addition of different amounts of sodium alginate (SA) and compared with a composite prepared using Na CO as a catalyst for the polymerisation reaction. The effect of operating parameters such as SA concentration and polycondensation time on the structural and morphological properties of resorcinol-formaldehyde resins (RFR) and carbon-derived composites was investigated for further use as adsorbents. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of the biochar (BC) dose on solvent extractable (C) and freely dissolved (C) polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) content during co-composting. A significantly better reduction of Σ16 C PAHs after 98 days occurred during composting with BC (for 1% of BC - 44% and for 5% of BC - 23%) than in the control (15%). Despite the relatively high reduction of C PAHs in the experiment with 5% BC rate, the content of the PAHs was still the highest compared to other variants.
