Although the perception of justice is a core need of all individuals, the adaptive value of belief in a just world (BJW)-in everyday life and when facing severe distress-has been typically investigated in separate studies. In this article, we tested, in only one study, the possibility that BJW can be a personal resource and a coping resource. We analysed data from the European Social Survey comprised of random representative samples of 27 European countries (N = 24,776 participants).

Drug resistance is a common cause of therapy failure in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). One approach to tackling it is by targeting fundamental cellular processes, such as translation. The eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2α (EIF2α) is a key player in canonical translation initiation and integrates diverse stress signals; when phosphorylated, it curbs global protein synthesis.

Background: A Faraday cup (FC) facilitates a quite clean measurement of the proton fluence emerging from clinical spot-scanning nozzles with narrow pencil-beams. The utilization of FCs appears to be an attractive option for high dose rate delivery modes and the source models of Monte-Carlo (MC) dose engines. However, previous studies revealed discrepancies of 3%-6% between reference dosimetry with ionization chambers (ICs) and FC-based dosimetry.

Psychiatric disorders show high co-morbidity, including co-morbid expressions of subclinical psychopathology across multiple disease spectra. Given the limitations of classical case-control designs in elucidating this overlap, new approaches are needed to identify biological underpinnings of spectra and their interaction. We assessed autistic-like traits (using the Autism Quotient, AQ) and schizotypy - as models of subclinical expressions of disease phenotypes and examined their association with volumes and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) of anterior, mid- and posterior hippocampus segments from  structural MRI scans in 318 and arterial spin labelling (ASL) in 346 nonclinical subjects, which overlapped with the structural imaging sample (N = 298).

National Center for Tumor Disease (NCT), University Hospital Heidelberg (UKHD) and German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), Heidelberg, Germany; Department of Radiation Oncology, University Hospital Heidelberg (UKHD), Heidelberg, Germany; Heidelberg Ion-Beam Therapy Center (HIT), Heidelberg, Germany; Department of Radiotherapy and Radiation Oncology and; Marburg Ion-Beam Therapy Center (MIT), Department of Radiotherapy and Radiation Oncology, Marburg University Hospital, Marburg, Germany; UCT - Universitäres Centrum für Tumorerkrankungen Frankfurt-Marburg.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the effectiveness and toxicity of combining intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) with a carbon ion boost for treating sinonasal malignancies, which are difficult due to their location near critical structures in the head and neck.
  • A total of 35 patients with difficult-to-treat adenoid or squamous cell carcinomas were treated, experiencing minimal acute side effects, with only 12% suffering from severe mucositis.
  • The outcomes showed promising survival rates: 79.4% overall survival and notable local progression-free survival rates, indicating this treatment approach is a viable option for managing these rare tumors.

Article Synopsis
  • A study investigates the connection between formal thought disorder (FTD) symptoms in schizophrenia and brain volume deficiencies, using data from 752 individuals with schizophrenia and 1256 controls.
  • The research identifies separate neural networks associated with positive and negative FTD, revealing differences in brain structures affected by each type of symptom.
  • Findings show that negative FTD is linked to specific neuronal and astrocyte cell types, while positive FTD is associated with microglial cells, enhancing understanding of the biological mechanisms behind these symptoms.

The pharmacokinetics of contrast media (CM) will determine how long safe waiting intervals between successive CT or MRI examinations should be. The Contrast Media Safety Committee has reviewed the data on pharmacokinetics of contrast media to suggest safe waiting intervals between successive contrast-enhanced imaging studies in relation to the renal function of the patient. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Consider a waiting time between elective contrast-enhanced CT and (coronary) angiography with successive iodine-based contrast media administrations in patients with normal renal function (eGFR > 60 mL/min/1.

Tailored positioning and number of hand rub dispensers: the fundamentals for optimized hand hygiene compliance.

J Hosp Infect

November 2023

Division of Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, Marburg University Hospital, Marburg, Germany. Electronic address:

Background: Availability of alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR) dispensers at positions adapted to the work flow of healthcare workers (HCWs) is decisive in order to carry out indication-based hand rubbing. Although requirements and guidelines regarding the positioning of ABHR dispensers are in place, scientific evidence is often lacking.

Methods: In order to analyse the impact of the location and number of ABHR dispensers on hand hygiene performance, additional dispensers were systematically placed in patient rooms in a surgical 38-bed ward at Marburg University Hospital, Germany to complement the existing dispenser locations.

The management of breast cancer during pregnancy (PrBC) is a relatively rare indication and an area where no or little evidence is available since randomized controlled trials cannot be conducted. In general, advances related to breast cancer (BC) treatment outside pregnancy cannot always be translated to PrBC, because both the interests of the mother and of the unborn should be considered. Evidence remains limited and/or conflicting in some specific areas where the optimal approach remains controversial.

Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) is a well-established technique for the management of blunt thoracic aortic injury (BTAI). Despite improvements in vascular imaging, graft material properties, and implant techniques, stent-graft deployment artificially induces aortic stiffening. This study aimed to evaluate the midterm effect of thoracic endovascular aortic repair after blunt thoracic aortic injury on aortic stiffness and cardiac function in young patients using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging.

Purpose: Compared to the free-breathing technique, adjuvant left breast irradiation after breast-conserving surgery or mastectomy using the breath-hold method significantly reduces the heart mean dose, Left anterior descending artery, and ipsilateral lung doses. Movement with deep inspiration may also reduce heart volume in the field and regional node doses.

Materials And Methods: Pre-radiotherapy planning CT was performed in the free-breathing, and breath-hold techniques using RPM, demographic information, clinicopathological data, heart volume in the field, heart mean dose, LAD mean dose, and regional nodal doses were calculated in both free breathing and DIBH.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of re-resection on survival rates in patients with recurrent glioblastoma, using the RANO classification to assess the degree of tumor removal and its correlation with patient outcomes.
  • A cohort of 681 patients was analyzed, revealing that re-resection generally leads to longer survival, especially when minimal residual contrast-enhancing tumor remains post-surgery.
  • The findings support that "maximal resection" (class 2) offers better prognoses compared to "submaximal resection" (class 3), while "supramaximal resection" (class 1) does not improve survival and can result in postoperative complications.

Assemblies of multivalent RNA-binding protein fused in sarcoma (FUS) can exist in the functional liquid-like state as well as less dynamic and potentially toxic amyloid- and hydrogel-like states. How could then cells form liquid-like condensates while avoiding their transformation to amyloids? Here, we show how posttranslational phosphorylation can provide a "handle" that prevents liquid-solid transition of intracellular condensates containing FUS. Using residue-specific coarse-grained simulations, for 85 different mammalian FUS sequences, we show how the number of phosphorylation sites and their spatial arrangement affect intracluster dynamics preventing conversion to amyloids.
