Particle therapy presents a promising alternative to conventional photon therapy for treating non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the heterogeneous structure of lung tissue leads to the degradation of the Bragg peak and thereby to the degradation of the dose distribution. This review offers a comprehensive overview of the models developed to account for these modulation effects.

Article Synopsis
  • A case study highlights the use of a large myomatous uterus as a natural spacer during radiation therapy for a female patient with locally advanced anal carcinoma, helping to protect the bowel from excess radiation exposure.
  • The patient initially presented with anal pain, and subsequent examinations confirmed a diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma, with imaging revealing a large uterus containing multiple leiomyomas.
  • The presence of these leiomyomas minimized the radiation dose to the small intestine, leading to virtually no acute gastrointestinal toxicity during the patient's chemoradiation treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • Large language models (LLMs) have potential in breast cancer care decision-making but face challenges such as lack of source control, explainability, and health data security, which the small language model (SLM) aims to address through a tailored version (BC-SLM) for German guidelines.
  • The study evaluates the BC-SLM's accuracy and functionality using a multidisciplinary tumor board as the gold standard, comparing its treatment recommendations against ChatGPT3.5 and 4 through statistical analysis involving fictional patient profiles.
  • Results show that the BC-SLM achieved 86% concordance with the tumor board, similar to ChatGPT4 (90%) and slightly lower than ChatGPT3.5 (83%), indicating its initial effectiveness and adherence

Superior temporal sulcus folding, functional network connectivity, and autistic-like traits in a non-clinical population.

Mol Autism

October 2024

Cognitive Neuropsychiatry Lab, Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Philipps-Universität Marburg, Rudolf-Bultmann-Str. 8, 35037, Marburg, Germany.

Background: Autistic-like traits (ALT) are prevalent across the general population and might be linked to some facets of a broader autism spectrum disorder (ASD) phenotype. Recent studies suggest an association of these traits with both genetic and brain structural markers in non-autistic individuals, showing similar spatial location of findings observed in ASD and thus suggesting a potential neurobiological continuum.

Methods: In this study, we first tested an association of ALTs (assessed with the AQ questionnaire) with cortical complexity, a cortical surface marker of early neurodevelopment, and then the association with disrupted functional connectivity.

Introduction: Treatment with chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cells involves a large number of interdisciplinary stakeholders and is associated with complex processes ranging from patient-specific production to follow-up care. Due to the complexity, maximum process optimization is required in order to avoid efficiency losses. This study aimed at systematically determining the preconditions for a frictionless flow of the CAR-T process by surveying the stakeholders involved.

: The management of patients with aortic valve pathologies can sometimes fall into a "gray zone", where the optimal treatment approach is not straightforward. The comparative benefits of sutureless aortic valve replacement (SUAVR) using the Perceval bioprosthesis versus transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) for the "gray zone" of aortic valve replacement procedures remain a topic of debate. To further explore this issue, we conducted a study with pairwise, single-arm, and Kaplan-Meier-based meta-analyses to compare the outcomes of SUAVR with the Perceval bioprosthesis versus TAVI, as well as to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and durability of SUAVR with the Perceval bioprosthesis over mid-term and long-term follow-up periods.

Background: Ultrahigh dose-rate radiation (UHDR) produces less hydrogen peroxide (HO) in pure water, as suggested by some experimental studies, and is used as an argument for the validity of the theory that FLASH spares the normal tissue due to less reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. In contrast, most Monte Carlo simulation studies suggest the opposite.

Purpose: We aim to unveil the effect of UHDR on HO production in pure water and its underlying mechanism, to serve as a benchmark for Monte Carlo simulation.
