Article Synopsis
  • Scientists created a special computer program to predict which patients with heart problems might have to go back to the hospital within 30 days after they are discharged.
  • They studied 2,232 patients and used smart methods to make sure they picked the most important health information to help with predictions.
  • The best results came from a program called XGBoost, which was better than an older method at predicting which patients were at risk of going back to the hospital.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate whether prostatic artery embolization (PAE) can be considered a long-term cost-effective treatment option in patients with lower urinary tract symptoms secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia in comparison to transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP).

Methods: The in-hospital costs of PAE and TURP in the United States were obtained from a recent cost analysis. Clinical outcomes including nature and rate of adverse events for TURP and PAE along with rates of retreatment because of complications or clinical failure were obtained from peer-reviewed literature.

Brugada syndrome (BrS) is an inherited and rare cardiac arrhythmogenic disease associated with an increased risk of ventricular fibrillation and sudden cardiac death. Different genes have been linked to BrS. The majority of mutations are located in the gene, and the typical abnormal ECG is an elevation of the ST segment in the right precordial leads V1 to V3.

Objectives: Benign leiomyomas are the most common uterine tumors. In contrast, uterine leiomyosarcomas are malignancies with a poor prognosis due to difficulties in early diagnosis and inappropriate surgical treatment. Most often they are diagnosed incidentally after surgery performed for treatment of leiomyoma.

Article Synopsis
  • - Neuroma of the biliary tree is a rare condition with fewer than 100 reported cases, usually causing obstructive jaundice, and often related to prior surgery or abdominal trauma.
  • - This case report details three women aged 53-68 who experienced progressive obstructive jaundice, with initial evaluations misleadingly suggesting bile duct cancer; histological analysis confirmed diffuse neuromatous growth.
  • - The study highlights the need to consider biliary tree neuroma in the differential diagnosis of bile duct issues, especially in patients with a history of abdominal surgery.

Background: After receiving a cancer diagnosis patients face many challenges. The association between career situation and financial problems caused by cancer has a substantial impact on quality of life (QoL) among cancer patients. Indeed, the QoL such as physical and mental health of cancer patients is lower when the risk of psychological disorders or distress increases, and chances for cancer cure are reduced.

Introduction: The management of locally advanced extremity soft tissue sarcomas, particularly in terms of a limb salvage strategy, represents a challenge, especially in recurrent tumors. In the context of a patient-tailored multimodal therapy, hyperthermic isolated limb perfusion (ILP) is a promising limb-saving treatment option. We report the outcome of patients with primarily irresectable and locally recurrent soft tissue sarcoma (STS) treated by ILP.

Histopathological growth patterns of colorectal liver metastasis exhibit little heterogeneity and can be determined with a high diagnostic accuracy.

Clin Exp Metastasis

August 2019

Department of Surgical Oncology and Gastrointestinal Surgery, Erasmus MC Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 2040, 3000 CA, Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) exhibit distinct histopathological growth patterns (HGPs) that are indicative of prognosis following surgical treatment. This study aims to assess the reliability and replicability of this histological biomarker. Within and between metastasis HGP concordance was analysed in patients who underwent surgery for CRLM.

Neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy (nRCT) can significantly influence the tumor immune architecture that plays a pivotal role in regulating tumor growth. Whereas, various studies have investigated the effect of nRCT on tumor-infiltrating T cells, little is known about its impact on the frequency and activation status of human dendritic cells (DCs). Plasmacytoid DCs (pDCs) essentially contribute to the regulation of innate and adaptive immunity and may profoundly influence tumor progression.

Indocyanine green tissue angiography affects anastomotic leakage after esophagectomy. A retrospective, case-control study.

Int J Surg

December 2017

Department of Surgery, Mannheim University Medical Centre, University of Heidelberg, Theodor Kutzer Ufer 1-3, 68167, Mannheim, Germany. Electronic address:

Purpose: Optimal perfusion of the gastric conduit during esophagectomy is elementary for the anastomotic healing since poor perfusion has been associated with increased morbidity due to anastomotic leaks. Until recently surgical experience was the main tool to assess the perfusion of the anastomosis. We hypothesized that anastomoses located in the zone of optimal ICG perfusion of the gastric conduit ("optizone") have a reduced anastomotic leakage rate after esophagectomy.
