Diffuse axonal injury is usually caused by head trauma, and patients have significant clinical symptoms during admission to the emergency department. In our case, we present a five-year-old patient who was involved in a car accident. During admission to the emergency department, the patient had no symptoms of trauma.

Effect of delayed radical cystectomy for invasive bladder tumors on lymph node positivity, cancer-specific survival and total survival.

Introduction: Radical cystectomy (RC) is the main treatment option for patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) and non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), which carry the highest risk of progression. In this study, we investigated the effect of time from transurethral resection of the bladder (TUR-B) to cystectomy on lymph node positivity, cancer-specific survival and overall survival in patients with MIBC.

Methods: The records were reviewed of 530 consecutive patients who had RC and pelvic lymphadenectomy procedures with curative intent performed by selected surgeons between May 2005 and April 2016.

Introduction: In our country, this is usually done by patient relatives. In this study, we aimed to investigate the thought of doctors who done the diagnosis, doctors who arrange the treatment, first degree relatives of patients with lung cancer, and population as a control.

Materials And Methods: 310 subjects (100 doctors, 110 first degree realtives of patients, and 100 subjects as a control) were included to the study.

A case of late diagnosis of chronic subdural hematoma following spinal anesthesia.

Intracranial subdural hematoma developing following spinal anesthesia is a rare but serious complication. We describe a case of subdural hematoma developing following spinal anesthesia and diagnosed late. A female patient receiving spinal anesthesia for cesarean delivery 45 days prior to arrival at the emergency department presented to our hospital with non-severe headache persisting for 45 days after discharge.

Rare Clinical Sign of Hodgkin's Lymphoma: Ocular Involvement.

Bilateral non-granulomatous anterior uveitis with left vitritis and macular edema were detected in a 19-year-old woman presenting with blurred vision in her left eye. Light microscopic study of the pathologic mediastinal lymph node that was detected via contrast computed tomography imaging during etiologic study revealed nodular sclerosing and mixed cellularity Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL). Ocular findings completely resolved with adriablastin, bleomycin, vinblastine, dacarbazine chemotherapy treatment.

The alterations of serum FGF-21 levels, metabolic and body composition in early breast cancer patients receiving adjuvant endocrine therapy.

Background: In early breast cancer patients, the effects of hormonal therapy (tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors) on plasma fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF-21), lipid levels and body composition have not yet been investigated. Therefore, we aimed to analyze the relationship between FGF-21 and body composition as well as the effects of tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors on plasma lipid levels, FGF-21, and body composition.

Methods: A total of 72 patients were treated with either tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors due to their menopausal status after adjuvant radiotherapy.

Objective: Activation of trigeminovascular system is thought to play an important role in migraine pathogenesis. Blink reflex (BR) test is an easy method to study the trigeminal system. Latencies recorded in BR test were evaluated to examine neurophysiological changes that occur in migraine patients.

A comparison of cancer stem cell markers and nonclassical major histocompatibility complex antigens in colorectal tumor and noncancerous tissues.

Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) is one of the most fatal types of cancer in both women and men, and, unfortunately, patients are often diagnosed at an advanced stage. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are associated with poor prognosis, metastasis, and recurrence, as well as chemotherapy and radiotherapy resistance. Therefore, different treatment alternatives are needed to facilitate the elimination of CSCs.

The paracrine immunomodulatory interactions between the human dental pulp derived mesenchymal stem cells and CD4 T cell subsets.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have strong immunomodulatory properties, however these properties may show some differences according to the tissue type of their isolate. In this study we investigated the paracrine interactions between human DP derived MSCs (hDP-MSCs) and the CD4 T helper cell subsets to establish their immunomodulatory mechanisms. We found that the CD4-Tbet (Th1) and CD4-Gata3 (Th2) cells were suppressed by the hDP-MSCs, but the CD4-Stat3 (Th17) and CD4-CD25-FoxP3 (Treg) cells were stimulated.

Analysis of patients presenting to the emergency department with carbon monoxide intoxication.

Objectives: Carbon monoxide is a potentially fatal form of poisoning. The exact incidence is unclear, due to cases being undiagnosed or reported as fewer than the real number. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is of proven efficacy in the treatment of CO intoxication.

Prognostic value of serum pregnancy-associated plasma protein A level at the initial ED presentation in elderly patients with CAP.

Objective: This study aims to compare serum pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A) levels in surviving and nonsurviving elderly patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), investigating whether PAPP-A is correlated with CAP prediction scores and whether PAPP-A can successfully predict 28-day mortality rates in elderly patients.

Methods: This prospective, observational, single-center, cross-sectional study was conducted at the emergency department (ED) of Celal Bayar University Hospital in Manisa, Turkey, between January and September 2014. All patients underwent follow-up evaluations 28 days after admission.

Comparison of Patients in Whom Double-J Stent Had Been Placed or Not Placed After Renal Transplantation in a Single Center: A Follow-up Study.

Background: Double-J (DJ) stents play an important role in modern urology to prevent undesirable side effects after surgery. We aimed to investigate the relationship of DJ stents with the demographic characteristics, surgical complications, urinary tract infection (UTI), and hematuria in the patients who underwent renal transplantation (Tx).

Methods: Data of 354 patients who underwent renal Tx between 2008 and 2011 at Ege University were evaluated retrospectively; 331 patients were included in this study.

Comparison of Preemptive Kidney Transplantation With Nonpreemptive Kidney Transplantation in a Single Center: A Follow-up Study.

Background And Aim: The effect of preemptive transplantation of kidneys from living donors on patient and allograft survival is controversial. In this study, we aimed to evaluate whether preemptive kidney transplantation performed without the development of patient dialysis-related complications has a favorable effect on patient and graft survival.

Patients And Method: The study included 334 adult renal transplant recipients.

Diagnostic significance of biopsies in renal masses.

Introduction: We investigated the reliability and mapping of percutaneous needle core biopsies in the kidney in histopathological diagnosis of renal masses particularly for those with suspicious radiologic appearance in an attempt to prevent unnecessary nephrectomies.

Material And Methods: Overall, 96 cases were included in our study that underwent radical nephrectomy or partial nephrectomy due to renal mass between November 2007 - March 2010. Ex-vivo biopsies 1 cm apart were obtained from the peripheral region of the mass.

Schizophrenia and gastroesophageal reflux symptoms.

Background: Psychological factors and psychiatric disorders play a role in a variety of gastrointestinal illnesses, including esophageal diseases.

Aim: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the frequency of gastroesophageal reflux disease symptoms in patients with schizophrenia in Turkey.

Relapsing polychondritis is a cartilage tissue disease characterized by inflammatory and destructive episodes. Elastic cartilage of the ear and nose, hyaline cartilage of the joints, hyaline cartilage of vertebra and trachea are the main involvement areas. Also organs having proteoglycan structure such as eyes, heart, blood vessels, and the inner ear can be affected.

Introduction: The lumbar disc herniations are seen very common than spinal ependymomas in the neurosurgery polyclinic routine.

Presentation Of Case: In our case, both pathologies were seen at the most frequently located levels compatible with the literature. Aim of this case report is, to remind once more that, different pathologies can be found at the same time in a single patient; differential diagnosis must be done very carefully.

Objectives: Acute kidney failure after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is a serious complication that increases morbidity and mortality rates. Early detection and prevention of this complication are very important. A novel biomarker named neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) can play an important role in early diagnosis of acute kidney injury.

Comparison of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional conformal treatment plans in gastric cancer radiotherapy.

Background: Postoperative chemoradiotherapy is accepted as standard treatment for stage IB-IV, M0 gastric cancer. Radiotherapy (RT) planning of gastric cancer is important because of the low radiation tolerance of surrounding critical organs. The purpose of this study was to compare the dosimetric aspects of 2-dimensional (2D) and 3-dimensional (3D) treatment plans, with the twin aims of evaluating the adequacy of 2D planning fields on coverage of planning target volume (PTV) and 3D conformal plans for both covering PTV and reducing the normal tissue doses.

The effects of resveratrol on tendon healing of diabetic rats.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of resveratrol on the tendon healing process of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.

Methods: The study included 16 male Sprague-Dawley rats. Streptozotocin was administered to induce diabetes and bilateral tenorrhaphy of the Achilles tendons was performed.

Prognostic significance of bcl-2, c-myc, survivin and tumor grade in synovial sarcoma.

Objective: We aimed to determine the prognostic value of bcl-2, c-myc and survivin in synovial sarcoma cases and to evaluate the relationship between the conventional morphological findings with prognosis.

Material And Method: In this study, we evaluated 81 synovial sarcoma cases referred to our tertiary tumor center during a period of 20 years. We applied bcl-2, c-myc and survivin immunohistochemically and investigated the relationship with prognosis for those 65 cases with follow-up.

The value of serum immunoglobulin free light chain assessment in patients with monoclonal gammopathies and acute renal failure.

Objective: Immunoglobulin free light chain (FLC) abnormalities are common in patients with monoclonal gammopathies and the kidneys are the most affected organs. Immunoassays that provide quantitative measurement of FLC in serum indicate monoclonal FLC production based on the presence of an abnormal FLC kappa:lambda (κ:λ) ratio. The aim of this study was to assess the utility of serum FLC measurement as a diagnostic tool for detecting plasma cell dyscrasias in comparison to standard assays, and to ascertain its sensitivity and specificity in patients with acute renal failure (ARF).
