Background: Temporary pacemaker lead implantation is a common low-risk procedure, but can occasionally get complicated by infections, arrhythmias, thromboembolic events, and perforation of the vessel or the heart. However, intracardiac knotting of the temporary pacemaker lead has been rarely reported. This could lead to vascular or valvular injury, pneumothorax, symptomatic loss of pacing or haemodynamic compromise, and difficult lead removal.

A new series of lanthanum(iii) complexes was synthesized using a -anisidine-appended 1-hydroxy-2-acetonapthanone (3) Schiff base and characterized spectroscopic methods. The ligand was synthesized sonication and the crystalline product was characterized using X-ray crystallography. The genotoxicity of the compound was assessed primarily by the bacterial reverse mutation (Ames) test and the mammalian chromosome aberration test; in both cases, the samarium complex 5 was found to be non-mutagenic.

Repeated social stress leads to contrasting patterns of structural plasticity in the amygdala and hippocampus.

Behav Brain Res

July 2018

Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences, Neurobiology, University Groningen, Groningen, The Netherlands. Electronic address:

Previous studies have demonstrated that repeated immobilization and restraint stress cause contrasting patterns of dendritic reorganization as well as alterations in spine density in amygdalar and hippocampal neurons. Whether social and ethologically relevant stressors can induce similar patterns of morphological plasticity remains largely unexplored. Hence, we assessed the effects of repeated social defeat stress on neuronal morphology in basolateral amygdala (BLA), hippocampal CA1 and infralimbic medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC).

Detection of genital chlamydial and gonococcal infection using urine samples: A community-based study from India.

J Infect Public Health

July 2018

Department of Virus Research (Manipal Centre for Virus Research), Regional Reference Laboratory for Influenza Virus & ICMR Grade-I Virus Diagnostic Laboratory, Manipal University, Manipal 576104, Karnataka, India. Electronic address:

Sexually transmitted infections (STI) have a major impact on the reproductive health of women. Among the different etiological agents of STIs, Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae are the main bacterial pathogens that cause sexually transmitted infections in women. The aim of the study was to estimate the prevalence of genital chlamydial and gonococcal infection among women in the age group of 18-65 years from a community-based setting.

Comparative Efficacy and Safety of Caffeine and Aminophylline for Apnea of Prematurity in Preterm (≤34 weeks) Neonates: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Indian Pediatr

April 2017

Departments of Pediatrics and *Community Medicine, Women and Child block, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal. Correspondence to: Dr Leslie Edward Simon Lewis, Professor and Unit Head, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Department of Pediatrics, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal University Manipal 576 104, India.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to compare the effectiveness and safety of caffeine versus aminophylline in treating apnea of prematurity in preterm neonates at a hospital in Southern India.
  • - A total of 240 infants were involved in a randomized controlled trial, with one group receiving caffeine and the other aminophylline, evaluating their effects on apnea spells and associated health issues over a treatment period.
  • - Results showed that aminophylline led to fewer apnea episodes in the first week, but both treatments had similar outcomes regarding apnea rates and hospital stays; however, caffeine was linked to a lower risk of tachycardia in treated infants.

Assessment of cost of illness for diabetic patients in South Indian tertiary care hospital.

J Pharm Bioallied Sci

January 2016

Department of Pharmacy Practice, Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Manipal University, Manipal, Karnataka, India.

Background: The impact of diabetes on health-care expenditures has been increasingly recognized. To formulate an effective health planning and resource allocation, it is important to determine economic burden.

Objective: The objective of this study is to assess the cost of illness (COI) for diabetic inpatients with or without complications.

We had previously demonstrated the anti-diabetic potential and pancreatic protection of two thiazolidin-4-one derivatives containing nicotinamide moiety (NAT-1 and NAT-2) in STZ-induced diabetic mice. However, due to the limitations of the STZ model, we decided to undertake a detailed evaluation of anti-diabetic potential of the molecules on a high sucrose diet (HSD) fed diabetic mouse model. Further, mechanistic studies on the phosphorylation of AMPK, Akt and p38 MAP kinase in L6 myotubes and anti-inflammatory studies in RAW264.

Conservation managers and policy makers are often confronted with a challenging dilemma of devising suitable strategies to maintain agricultural productivity while conserving endemic species that at the early stages of becoming pests of agricultural crops. Identification of environmental factors conducive to species range expansion for forecasting species distribution patterns will play a central role in devising management strategies to minimize the conflict between the agricultural productivity and biodiversity conservation. Here, we present results of a study that predicts the distribution of , a snail endemic to the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot, which is becoming a pest in cardamom () plantations.

Plant-derived SAC domain of PAR-4 (Prostate Apoptosis Response 4) exhibits growth inhibitory effects in prostate cancer cells.

Front Plant Sci

October 2015

Department of Gene Function and Regulation, Institute of Life Sciences, Department of Biotechnology, Government of India Bhubaneswar, India.

The gene Par-4 (Prostate Apoptosis Response 4) was originally identified in prostate cancer cells undergoing apoptosis and its product Par-4 showed cancer specific pro-apoptotic activity. Particularly, the SAC domain of Par-4 (SAC-Par-4) selectively kills cancer cells leaving normal cells unaffected. The therapeutic significance of bioactive SAC-Par-4 is enormous in cancer biology; however, its large scale production is still a matter of concern.

Variations in the origin of arteries in the abdomen are very common. With the invention of new operative techniques within the abdomen cavity, the anatomy of abdominal vessels has assumed a great deal of clinical importance. We report here a rare case of formation of an "arterial glomerulus" at the hilum of the right kidney by the branches of right renal artery.

Iron sucrose versus oral iron therapy in pregnancy anemia.

Indian J Community Med

October 2012

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, KMC Hospital, Manipal University Manipal, Karnataka, India.

Background: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common medical problem in pregnancy. Parenteral iron is a useful treatment, although iron dextran use decreased due to anaphylaxis. Iron sucrose is a newer agent that has overcome the shortcomings of iron dextran.

Ascorbic acid protects against restraint stress-induced memory deficits in Wistar rats.

Clinics (Sao Paulo)

July 2010

Department of Physiology, Melaka-Manipal Medical College, International Centre for Health Sciences, Manipal University - Manipal, Karnataka, India.

Objective: Chronic stress has been shown to cause oxidative damage in the central nervous system. Although stress-induced impairments in learning and memory have been studied extensively, very few studies have investigated possible ways to prevent their ill effects. The present work was designed to study the protective effects of ascorbic acid in memory loss induced by chronic restraint stress.
