Evaluation of the efficacy of a charcoal-based tooth whitening dentifrice on coffee stains: an in vitro study.

Can J Dent Hyg

June 2023

Department of Periodontology, Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Manipal, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal, Karnataka, India.

Background: Charcoal-based preparations have recently gained popularity, particularly in oral hygiene products such as tooth whitening dentifrices, owing to their abrasive and adsorptive properties. The present in vitro study evaluates the efficacy of a charcoal-based tooth whitening dentifrice compared with a non-charcoal-based whitening dentifrice in removing coffee stains on tooth surfaces.

Methods: Thirty-three human extracted tooth specimens were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 study groups: Group 1 (charcoal-based whitening dentifrice [CBWD]), Group 2 (non-charcoal-based whitening dentifrice [NCBWD]), and Group 3 (distilled water [DW]).

LASER as a tool for surface modification of dental biomaterials: A review.

Heliyon

June 2023

Department of Atomic and Molecular Physics, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, 576104, India.

In recent years, the application of lasers for modifying the surface topography of dental biomaterials has received increased attention. This review paper aims to provide an overview of the current status on the utilization of lasers as a potential tool for surface modification of dental biomaterials such as implants, ceramics, and other materials used for restorative purposes. A literature search was done for articles related to the use of lasers for surface modification of dental biomaterials in English language published between October 2000 and March 2023 in Scopus, Pubmed and web of science, and relevant articles were reviewed.

The word 'diet' usually encompasses the consumption of food that includes all the necessary nutrients required for the optimal functioning of the body. Nutritional supplements hold a supreme position due to the demanding lifestyles or medical conditions in this current era. Although medical literature has sufficient evidence exploring the effect of nutrients on general health, this systematic review aimed at specifically evaluating the role of nutritional supplements on oral health in adults.

Quantifying health utilities of young adult orthodontic patients using the time trade-off method: a cross-sectional study.

Dental Press J Orthod

June 2023

Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Department of Public Health Dentistry (Manipal, Karnataka, India).

Objective: To study the feasibility of time trade-off (TTO) method in quantifying health utility ratings in different types of malocclusion.

Material And Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 70 orthodontic patients aged 18 years or above, reporting for treatment/consultation, were included and interviewed. Malocclusion-related health utilities were assessed through the TTO method, and oral health-related quality of life was measured with the help of Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ).

Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry, Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, Karnataka, India, Phone: +91 9886932642, e-mail:

Aim: To assess the remineralizing potential of self-assembling peptide P and compare it to the remineralizing potential of fluoride varnish using DIAGNOdent, as well as the amount of mineral gain after application of fluoride varnish and self-assembling peptide P.

Materials And Methods: This study included 20 premolars extracted during orthodontic therapy with all surfaces intact and free of hypoplastic regions, white spot lesions (WSL) and dental caries. The teeth sample for Curodont Repair (self-assembling P) and Bifluorid 10® (fluoride varnish) was equally divided.

Background: The surgical treatment of ameloblastoma of the jaws remains contentious due to the variable recurrence rate amongst its variants, the tumor's local invasive behavior, and the lack of consensus among surgeons concerning the extent of resection in the contiguous healthy tissues.

Objective: To determine the recurrence rate of ameloblastoma and its association with the resection margins.

Materials And Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study of the medical records of patients who underwent surgical resection of the jaws as the primary modality of treatment for ameloblastoma.

Anterior open bite is defined as a condition in which upper incisor crowns fail to overlap the incisal third of the lower incisor crowns when the mandible is brought into full occlusion. The diagnosis, treatment, and successful retention of treated open-bite malocclusion continue to be a constant subject of discussion and study, contributing to the frustrations of clinicians. Various modalities have been used for the correction of open bite for the different age groups.

Article Synopsis
  • In today's world, tooth erosion is a common issue, and the study explores effective treatments to prevent demineralization using biomineralization.
  • The research compares the effectiveness of two remineralizing agents—self-assembling peptide P11-4 (SAP P11-4) and calcium silicate plus sodium phosphate (CSSP)—on both intact and demineralized enamel.
  • Results show significant remineralization in demineralized teeth for both agents, but no notable difference in effectiveness between SAP P11-4 and CSSP was found for intact teeth.

Diagnostic conundrum in an ambiguous posterior mandibular osseous lesion: Case report and radiological review.

Int J Surg Case Rep

May 2023

Department of Pathology, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, Karnataka 575001, India.

Introduction And Importance: Non-odontogenic osseous lesions of the mandible are relatively uncommon entities compared to odontogenic lesions. Although the posterior mandible is not a usual site, it is not rare either for these osseous lesions, making the diagnosis ambiguous, and if misdiagnosed leading to different treatment protocols.

Case Presentation: A 43-year-old female presented with a hard tissue lesion of the posterior mandible, misdiagnosed as a sialolith of the submandibular salivary gland in two other centers due to overlapping of symptoms, anatomic complexity, and inadequate investigations.
