Objective: A wide variety of mouth rinses are available to combat micro-organisms in the oral cavity. At the present global pandemic, the need of the hour is to control the viral infection due to the novel corona virus SARS-COV-2, as its port of entry is through the receptors located in the oral and pharyngeal mucosa. This systematic literature review focuses on the in vivo studies [randomized control trials (RCTs)] done on the efficacy of existing mouth rinses which have been used in reducing the viral loads.

Molecular implications of HOX genes targeting multiple signaling pathways in cancer.

Cell Biol Toxicol

February 2022

Department of Oral Pathology, Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Manipal, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, 576104, India.

Homeobox (HOX) genes encode highly conserved homeotic transcription factors that play a crucial role in organogenesis and tissue homeostasis. Their deregulation impacts the function of several regulatory molecules contributing to tumor initiation and progression. A functional bridge exists between altered gene expression of individual HOX genes and tumorigenesis.

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a manifestation of bone exposure in the maxillofacial region due to use of drugs such as bisphosphonates, anti-resorptive agents and anti-angiogenic agents. This G1- humanized monoclonal antibody neutralizes the activity of the Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), thus reducing the vascularity of the tumor, which in turn, results in the inhibition of its growth. This case report is of a 53-year-old man with metastatic cholangiocarcinoma who received bevacizumab therapy for the past 11 months.

Over the years, many clinical and engineering methods have been adapted for testing and screening for the presence of diseases. The most commonly used methods for diagnosis and analysis are computed tomography (CT) and X-ray imaging. Manual interpretation of these images is the current gold standard but can be subject to human error, is tedious, and is time-consuming.

Fibrosis is a pathological state characterized by excessive deposition of the extracellular matrix components leading to impaired tissue function in the affected organ. It results in scarring of the affected tissue akin to an over-healing wound as a consequence of chronic inflammation and repair in response to injury. Persistent trauma of susceptible oral mucosa due to habitual chewing of betel quid resulting in zealous healing of the mucosal tissue is one plausible explanation for the onset of oral submucous fibrosis (OSF).

Inflammation plays a major role in cancer development and progression and has the potential to be used as a prognostic marker in cancer. Previous studies have attempted to evaluate Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) or monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) as indicators of inflammation/prognostic markers in cancer, but there is no common consensus on their application in clinical practice. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to (a) assess the prognostic efficacy of all three prognostic markers in comparison to each other and (b) investigate the prognostic potential of these three markers in HNC.
