Research output provides an insight into the development of the scientific capability of a country. Budget allocation for research and development (R&D) is directly proportional to the research output of a country. While developed countries spend a significant percentage of their GDP on R&D, developing countries do not have enough resources to invest in R&D.

The current study reports an integrated approach of machine learning and tryptophan fluorescence and photoacoustic spectral properties to assess the mitochondrial status under oral pathological conditions. The mitochondria in the study were isolated from oral cancer tissues and adjacent normal counterparts, and the corresponding fluorescence and photoacoustic spectra of tryptophan were recorded at 281 nm pulsed laser excitations. A set of features were selected from the pre-processed spectra and were used to classify the data using support vector machine (SVM) learning in the MATLAB platform.

Introduction: Nasal septal deviation (NSD) and concha bullosa (CB) are associated with airway obstruction in mouth breathers. Mouth breathing is associated with alterations in maxillary growth and palatal architecture. The aim of our study was to determine the effect of the presence of CB and NSD on the dimensions of the hard palate using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).

Department of Public Health Dentistry, Amrita School of Dentistry, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Kochi, Kerala, India.

Introduction: The link between periodontal disease and noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) has been the subject of major research over the past several years. The primary objective of this review is to understand the cellular and molecular components that link common risk factors (exposure) in adult patients (population) with periodontal disease and other NCDs (outcome). The secondary objective is to interpret from existing literature the possibility of identifying the molecular plausibility of the Common Risk Factor Approach (CRFA).

Oral mucositis: Current knowledge and future directions.

Dis Mon

May 2022

Consultant Maxilofacial Surgeon, Pune, Maharashtra, India. Electronic address:

Oral mucositis secondary to head and neck chemoradiation displays a complex molecular pathogenesis involving epithelial and microvascular injury, release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and host-microbiome communications. These processes lead to oxidative stress and the release of reactive oxygen species that stifle the structural integrity of the oral mucosa, with emergence of erosions and ulcers. The consequences are malnutrition, psychological/psychiatric symptoms, poor quality of life, and occurrence of opportunistic infections.

Department of Oral Pathology, Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Manipal, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal 576104, India. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The review aims to understand how immune factors in the tumour microenvironment affect oral cancer, highlighting the need for a balance between tumour tolerance and aggressiveness by immune cells for effective treatment.
  • The research involved a detailed examination of stromal and immune components in oral cancer through various scholarly databases and used in silico analysis to find potential new drug candidates for immunotherapy.
  • Findings indicate that both cellular and extracellular elements in the tumour microenvironment contribute to immunosuppression and cancer progression, suggesting that targeting immune system components could lead to innovative treatment strategies in oral cancer.

MMP-9 Levels and NaOCl Lavage in Randomized Trial on Direct Pulp Capping.

J Dent Res

April 2022

Clinic of Conservative and Preventive Dentistry, University of Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland.

Outcome expectations of direct pulp capping in carious teeth are obscured by a clinically unknown infiltration and breakdown of the dental pulp tissue. Histologic studies showed that this soft tissue breakdown is related to the innate immune system. We hypothesized 1) that a neutrophil biomarker could predict the outcome of direct pulp capping and 2) that using sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) as a lavage solution to remove necrotized infected pulp tissue could improve it.

Estimation of Age by Evaluating the Occlusal Tooth Wear in Molars: A Study on Dakshina Kannada Population.

Clin Cosmet Investig Dent

October 2021

Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology, Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Mangalore, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, Karnataka, 576104, India.

Purpose: Assessment of teeth to estimate age in the living as well as the dead is well documented in the literature. Though applied in conjunction with other parameters in Gustafson's technique, attrition of teeth solely is an underexplored indicator for age estimation mainly in India. Most of the studies using attrition of teeth have been conducted in bioarchaeology, and in populations where studies are being conducted in forensic contexts, the results are debatable.

Orofacial granulomatosis: A case report and a proposal of a diagnostic algorithm for oral granulomatous lesions.

J Oral Maxillofac Pathol

August 2021

Department of oral Pathology and Microbiology, Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Manipal, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, Karnataka, India.

Orofacial granulomatosis (OFG) is an uncommon chronic inflammatory disorder with multifactorial etiology and pathogenesis affecting the orofacial region which appears usually as a persistent and/or recurrent swelling that may involve one or both the lips and/or recurrent ulcers along with other orofacial features. The diagnosis of OFG is challenging and it should be ruled out from other conditions characterized by granulomatous inflammation. This article describes a case of a 30-year-old female patient with upper lip swelling as the main manifestation without any systemic involvement and we have also laid down a proposal of a diagnostic algorithm for differential diagnoses and treatment modalities for OFG which could be helpful for the clinician and dentists alike to rule out other granulomatous disorders thus in effective management of OFG.

The conditioning of the root canal wall during chemo-mechanical root canal treatment differentially affects the adhesion of root canal sealers. This investigation evaluated the impact of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) concentration as used in a root canal irrigation concept called continuous chelation, with 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) contained in the NaOCl solution that is applied. Fourier-transform infrared spectra of the dentinal wall were gathered.
