The utilization of an expanded genetic code and in vivo unnatural amino acid crosslinking has grown significantly in the past decade, proving to be a reliable system for the examination of protein-protein interactions. Perhaps the most utilized amino acid crosslinker, -benzoyl-(l)-phenylalanine (pBPA), has delivered a vast compendium of structural and mechanistic data, placing it firmly in the upper echelons of protein analytical techniques. pBPA contains a benzophenone group that is activated with low energy radiation (~365 nm), initiating a diradical state that can lead to hydrogen abstraction and radical recombination in the form of a covalent bond to a neighboring protein.

Abiotic reduction by iron minerals is arguably the most important fate process for munition compounds (MCs) in subsurface environments. No model currently exists that can predict the abiotic reduction rates of structurally diverse MCs by iron (oxyhydr)oxides. Significance: Multi-photon fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (MPFRAP) is a nonlinear microscopy technique used to measure the diffusion coefficient of fluorescently tagged molecules in solution. Previous MPFRAP fitting models calculate the diffusion coefficient in systems with diffusion or diffusion in laminar flow.
Aim: We propose an MPFRAP fitting model that accounts for shear stress in laminar flow, making it a more applicable technique for and studies involving diffusion.

The scattering functions of nine generations of ideal tri-functional comb and dendrimer polymers are computed by novel graph techniques. The properties of polymers having from 9 to 3069 branches are explored. The g-ratios and the scattering functions indicate that as the number of branches increases, comb polymers behave more and more like linear polymers with half the number of branches, whereas dendrimers become more like spherical objects.

Geographic variation in the vocal behavior of manatees has been reported but is largely unexplored. Vocalizations of wild West Indian manatees (Trichechus manatus) were recorded with hydrophones in Florida from Florida manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris), and in Belize and Panama from Antillean manatees (Trichechus manatus manatus) to determine if calls varied between subspecies and geographic regions. Calls were visually classified into five categories: squeaks, high squeaks, squeals, squeak-squeals, and chirps.

Survey respondents who are non-attentive, respond randomly, or misrepresent who they are can impact the outcomes of surveys. Prior findings reported by the CDC have suggested that people engaged in highly dangerous cleaning practices during the COVID-19 pandemic, including ingesting household cleaners such as bleach. In our attempts to replicate the CDC's results, we found that 100% of reported ingestion of household cleaners are made by problematic respondents.

Machine-learning methods have exciting potential to aid materials discovery, but their wider adoption can be hindered by the opaqueness of many models. Even if these models are accurate, the inability to understand the basis for the predictions breeds skepticism. Thus, it is imperative to develop machine-learning models that are explainable and interpretable so that researchers can judge for themselves if the predictions are consistent with their own scientific understanding and chemical insight.

This study is aimed at the design, calibration, and development of a near-infrared (NIR) liquid crystal multifunctional automated optical polarimeter, which is aimed at the study and characterization of the polarimetric properties of polymer optical nanofilms. The characterization of these novel nanophotonic structures has been achieved, in terms of Mueller matrix and Stokes parameter analyses. The nanophotonic structures of this study consisted of (a) a matrix consisting of two different polymer domains, namely polybutadiene (PB) and polystyrene (PS), functionalized with gold nanoparticles; (b) cast and annealed Poly (styrene-b-methyl methacrylate) (PS-PMMA) diblock copolymers; (c) a matrix of a block copolymer (BCP) domain, PS-b-PMMA or Poly (styrene-block-methy methacrylate), functionalized with gold nanoparticles; and (d) different thicknesses of PS-b-P2VP diblock copolymer functionalized with gold nanoparticles.

Undersampling in the frequency domain (k-space) in MRI accelerates the data acquisition. Typically, a fraction of the low frequencies is fully collected and the rest are equally undersampled. Asian American students have experienced additional physical and emotional hardships associated with the COVID-19 pandemic due to increased xenophobic and anti-Asian discrimination. This study investigates different coping patterns and risk factors affecting Asian and non-Asian college students in response to COVID-19 challenges by studying the differences in their responses within four domains after the onset of the pandemic: academic adjustment, emotional adjustment, social support, and discriminatory impacts related to COVID-19. We first employed a machine learning approach to identify well-adjusted and poorly adjusted students in each of the four domains for the Asian and non-Asian groups, respectively.

No single linear free energy relationship (LFER) exists that can predict reduction rate constants of all munition constituents (MCs). To address this knowledge gap, we measured the reduction rates of MCs and their surrogates including nitroaromatics [NACs; 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN), 2-amino-4,6-dinitrotoluene (2-A-DNT), 4-amino-2,6-dinitrotoluene (4-A-DNT), and 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT)], nitramines [hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) and nitroguanidine (NQ)], and azoles [3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO) and 3,4-dinitropyrazole (DNP)] by three dithionite-reduced quinones (lawsone, AQDS, and AQS). All MCs/NACs were reduced by the hydroquinones except NQ.

Purpose: Task-based assessment of image quality in undersampled magnetic resonance imaging provides a way of evaluating the impact of regularization on task performance. In this work, we evaluated the effect of total variation (TV) and wavelet regularization on human detection of signals with a varying background and validated a model observer in predicting human performance.
Approach: Human observer studies used two-alternative forced choice (2-AFC) trials with a small signal known exactly task but with varying backgrounds for fluid-attenuated inversion recovery images reconstructed from undersampled multi-coil data.

Although inertial particle-laden flows occur in a wide range of industrial and natural processes, there is both a lack of fundamental understanding of these flows and continuum-level governing equations needed to predict transport and particle distribution. Towards this effort, the Taylor-Couette flow (TCF) system has been used recently to study the flow behaviour of particle-laden fluids under inertia. This article provides an overview of experimental, theoretical and computational work related to the TCF of neutrally buoyant non-Brownian suspensions, with an emphasis on the effect of finite-sized particles on the series of flow transitions and flow structures.

To assess the effectiveness of inhalation therapy, it is important to evaluate the lungs' structure; thus, visualization of the entire lungs at the level of the alveoli is necessary. To achieve this goal, the applied visualization technique must satisfy the following two conditions simultaneously: (1) it has to obtain images of the entire lungs, since one part of the lungs is influenced by the other parts, and (2) the images have to capture the detailed structure of the alveolus/acinus in which gas exchange occurs. The amount of residual Multi-layer Plastic Packaging (MPP) in Canada has greatly increased in the last two decades, which has economic and environmental consequences. MPP is primarily made up of two or more layers of Polyethylene (PE), Polyester (PET), Nylon (NY), and Metalized Polyester (METPET). Doped heavy metal-free III-V semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots (QDs) are of great interest both from the fundamental aspects of doping in highly confined structures, and from the applicative side of utilizing such building blocks in the fabrication of p-n homojunction devices. InAs nanocrystals (NCs), that are of particular relevance for short-wave IR detection and emission applications, manifest heavy n-type character poising a challenge for their transition to p-type behavior. The p-type doping of InAs NCs is presented with Zn - enabling control over the charge carrier type in InAs QDs field effect transistors.
